  • Will I need a seat sandwich adaptor to fit a Brooks B18 saddle on a bike with a micro-adjust seatclamp? Is it a double rail saddle is effectively what I'm asking.

  • I want to get my first credit credit card so I have the option of car rental when I go travelling this year.

Any recommendations? My bank is HSBC if it makes a difference.

One important question before answering this is will you be paying back each month's spend in full? If so, and going on advice that is now a couple of years old, something like a Tesco Credit Card is a good deal as you get clubcard points with every purchase you make.

I use one for all my business expenses and often spend around 5k a month which adds up to some handy vouchers for Christmas shopping or whatever.

If you are going to let the debt roll over then look for the best overall interest rate.

Have a poke round this website for advice.

  • [apologies for repeating WVM....!] go to www.moneysavingexpert.com and read about which is best - you can get a variety of good deals (for you probably 0% on new purchases might be good, as it is effectively an interest free loan AS LONG AS you have paid it off before the interest free period runs out

  • thanks for all the credit card stuff, but I forgot to give you guys an important detail. No one will give me a card anyway.

  • i am fitting a hollowtech crankset / BB to an early 90' LOOK - the frame has a hanger for a front mech which looks totally straight and not bent...
am having difficulties though when it comes to adjusting the upper / lower limits of the front mech and have come to the conclusion that the bottom bracket needs spacing out for the chainrings to line up properly (on a vertical axis) with the front mech. which is odd because i don't think that they should.

    so my question is this:

with no cable tension on the front mech and with no limit screws engaged, how should the front mech line up with the chainrings (double) as at the moment it's sitting plum over the middle of the two chainrings which seems too far out..?

  • Generally it should be sitting on the inside of the inner chainring

  • ^^^ thats what i thought...

and it's definitely a 68 mm BB shell.

  • I have spaced out a bottom bracket today due to the same problem you are having.

In my case due to the age of the bike, type of front derailleur I knew I would have to do this.

For info I used the delrin spacers from an old cassette. Ended up using rwo to move the chainrings out by about 5mm.

  • just done exactly the same with 2 mm spacer - now it works - i guess the front mech hanger on the frame was designed for front mech / BB & chainset combo with a different chainline

edit: bollocks, no it doesnt -it sts nicely on the small ring but doesn't have the reach to move chain onto big ring.

Take it all apart and replace them with metal. If you haven't squished your Delrin spacers into shims, you probably haven't torqued the BB cup enough, and it will precess and eventually fall out, damaging the threads in the process. Even if the plastic ring survives initial tightening, the material will creep in the long term, causing the threaded connection to loosen.

Plastic cassette spacers are not designed for significant axial load, whereas the BB should have about 20kN compression force between the fixed cup flange and shell. Basically, a BB spacer would need to survive being sandwiched between a bottle jack and one corner of a 7.5 ton truck.

    Yes, and it is.

  • is it true that once you hear tinnitus at a certain frequency your ear's sensetivity to that frequency will be diminished forever?

  • Does anyone know what the best prepaid/PAYG sim is in the USA for 3G data?

  • Anyone with experience of running a mixed SRAM / campag group?

Specifically, running an SRAM force chainset (39/53) with Campag Athena 11spd group?

Would a campag 11spd chain pose problems?

  • It shouldn't be an issue. The internal diameter of an 11 speed chain is the same as a 10 speed one, so I've had no problems running a 10 speed chain set with an 11 speed transmission.

  • Thanks Andy. STE5 is doing the opposite (campag chain set / SRAM group) and was convinced it wouldn't be a problem, but only concern I had was the chain. Not convinced by the aesthetics, but I can live with it I think.

  • i have a pair of campag record 8spd ergo levers

have tested the shifting unmounted and count 11 single clicks left hand and 7 clicks right hand (on the finger not thumb)

is this the right number of clicks?

  • DFP there are instructions for instalation on the ubuntu download page.

    So easy

The only other computer I have apart from my diseased PC is a mac. I dont think I can create/install these pendrive OS's from the mac.

nothing wrong there, the extra clicks on the l/h lever allow for fine adjustment (trim) of the fd once you've changed up/down so that any chain rub is removed

  • Thanks so they are working as they should you would say?
No other factors to consider/ checks to run?

  • underneath the metal bands which tighten onto the bars are black plastic covers with a wedge fit, prise these out and inspect the state of the grease on the inner mechanism.

there are youtube tutorials if you need to disassemble in order to replace springs/ratchets/grease

Download a liveCD and boot off of that, should be able to do eveything from that and save files to a pendrive. Just burn the iso file to cd, make sure it's bootable and press the correct f key when you start your computer.

  • ^^much appreciated
