  • I'm pretty confident that that isn't an obscene amount of seatpost to have out of the frame. I'm also sure that long stems aren't purely designed for people who have bought frames too small for them. I am not confused in my terminology. I do mean that the geometry will become more aggressive once the bottom part of the cartridge headset is gone.

Smallfurry seems to understand what I'm getting at. I've found a picture of a Vigorelli with an integrated headset inside the headtube on it (or so it appears). This is the 2011 model but I assume they won't have done any tweaking to the design of the headtube in terms of its capability to use an internal headset.

That headtube looks different to yours. Not easy to see though. I'd definitly look in to it if I was you. I still dont think its doable.

FTR I think the bike fits you. If you went with a bigger size you would'nt be able to get the bars so low, and thats not a massive amount of seat tube for a semi-compact frame geometry.

  • I'm taking it to my friend's shop this weekend. I'll let him have a look at it and see what he says.

Exactly! If I got the next size up it would have a larger headtube and thus I would be able to get less saddle-to-bar drop. This bike is almost perfect for me - I just like riding in a more aggressive position than most people do.

  • The bike does look like it fit you.

Saddle angle like that usually indicate it's set slightly too high.

  • headset types aren't interchangeable. If you have a cartridge type in it now, an integrated one won't fit.
Level your saddle, go for a ride then see how much it hurts and lower it slightly.

  • I <3 internet bike fitting.

  • You'd love my saddle angle in that case.

so you want to change a perfectly good headset for the sake of a 0.25 degree change in hta?

even if it was doable, still a complete waste of money imo. money would be better spent elsewhere on the build.

what sumo said. vigorellis handle really nice anyway, if you wanted something super aggressive why didnt you get the histogram?

just to make it clear, im not hating on your bike, just questioning your motives ;)

  • Upon doing some light Wikipedia reading I do not want to install an internal headset. I just want to put in an integrated headset which isn't a cartridge type.

There is no primary reason for swapping the headset. I just would like more saddle-to-bar drop which is being limited by the extra length added to the headtube due to the cartridge headset. The fact that it'll make the angles slightly more aggressive is a nice bonus. I didn't have the money for a Histogram and don't particularly favour them.

  • Not the same. It appears CInelli changed to a integrated headset for 2011. When they also bought out that colour way. Note how the black one flares out to accomidate the bearings.

integrated and internal are not the same.

There is no room in the headtube for the bearings.

You could get a track stem. Which would look cool, and lower the bars. You could also run a 20mm front tyre, and a 25mm rear. Sounds silly, but I like running a bigger rear on the road for traction, and the fact that it carries 65% ish of the bike+rider weight.

  • I hope you ment to write does not equal.

Internal and integrated are very different. The integrated headset sits on races that have been built into the headtube of the frame, whilst the internal headset is similar to a normal headset in that there are cups that need to be pressed into the headtube to hold the bearings.

I only scanned through what you want to do but frames are spec'd for a certain type of headset and are not interchangable with other types so I'd be suprised if your plan works.

  • To be honest, it would be easier as Smallfurry said, to use a track stem or an MTB stem.

  • if you need more saddle to bar drop why don't you just use the drops?

  • Love the way that none of these responses have been about paint stripping

  • This gives loads of information on different types of headsets. It's looks as if I won't be able to change it over.

This frame has a Columbus type headset which is basically like a standard integrated headset but the bearing cartridges rest on inserts placed in the headtube rather than directly into the headtube. I just dislike the large stack height of this type of headset. I guess I could try and find a smaller headset? I just measured mine out and it has a stack height of about 36mm. It's mainly down to the huge dustcap at the top.

    Yeah, sorry, fixed.

  • The Vigorelli does seem to have a fairly large head tube. When I was racing I used a road stem and deep Nitto track drops, now I'm commuting on it I'm using a Cinelli Pista stem to get the right amout of drop for bullhorns.

The paint stripping idea is a bit silly....

  • I had a Planet X headset lying about so I just swapped the dustcap of that with the FSA one and this is the result. It gives me about another 7-9mm of drop. I will see what it's like to ride tomorrow.

Now I just have to deal with an ever growing number of spacers. The worst part is the steerer is cut at about 25mm from the top of the stem but is just above the spacers when I use two 10mms and a 5mm so means I have to use a whole 30mm of spacers. Stylish...

Does anyone know why the FSA dustcap is so elongated? Is it purely down to aesthetics / style? It functions as a dustcap and integrated spacer?

  • The majority of people who brought a road/track/cyclocross bicycle tend to never slam the stem, from my experience in the shop at least.

  • By the way, is the steerer's carbon?

  • I'm not the majority of people - I'm all about slamming stems! :)

    The steerer is aluminium. Why?

  • Good, less trouble of cutting it down.

    carbon is a tad risky.

    (I too slam that stem).

  • fsa top caps are just really large, it's quite common to see people asking about shorter ones to replace it.

  • You can usually get various top cap heights. Nice to see you found a simple and functional solution.

Now leave a 5mm spacer above the stem, and draw around it. Saw the top of the steerer off 1mm below the line, with a hacksaw. Then rebuild with the 5mm spacer above the stem. Its a good idea to have the steerer extend above the stem, for better clamping.
