I finished Skyrim's main quest the other week, think I was level 45. To be honest I found myself getting less interested after the exploring was done. Still managed plenty of side quests along the way, but have very little inclination to go back and mop up the reast. Also, talking dragons >>>>>>>>>>>>
Made the most of having last week off work and managed to put some decent hours into BF3, making it to Colonel at the weekend. I cheapend my efforts by whoring the last few points in the Operation Metro meatgrider, scoring 25,000 in one round mostly from healing and reviving the ground meat. Next goal is to get my K/D ratio back in the black, currently 0.94 but climbing steadily.
Damn PC players being able to play 64player games = mega points!
I'm getting close to Colonel now too. May have to play some BF3 soon as I haven't picked it up in a while.

I am turning 30 this year and have found out what the surprise gift from my family was going to be - a tablet PC.
Having used mrs_com as a mole, I have now turned this into a PS3 as I'm not yet sold on the idea of a tablet.
I haven't owned or looked into buying a console for over 10 years so have no idea what to feed in to suggest they buy.
Could somebody recommend a good bundle package? Preferably from a bricks and mortar shop to make any possible warranty replacements easier. Cost isn't too much of an issue as there are quite a few people chipping in but I don't want to take the piss.
Thanks

I would recommend an Xbox over a ps3, as I own both.
Xbox Live is so much better than the PS3 equivalent and the games tend to run slightly better res textures on it as well. Also, the new dashboard for Xbox includes Lovefilm, Netflix, Sky, iPlayer and ITV.
Apart from that, I would try somewhere like Game or even Tesco to get a good bundle deal.

I'd second this. More games/choice etc.
I pretty much use my ps3 for bluray and netflix now (apart from BF3 - and that was only because I knew people who had it)
Bluray players are pretty cheap now, so buying a ps3 just for that is a bit pointless.

I think the choice between xbox and ps3 is about more than xbox live and res textures looking slightly different. e.g. if you really like Metal Gear Solid you're going to find it difficult to play that on an xbox, similarly if you're a fan of the halo series you're tuff outa luck if you only own a ps3.
I would say look at the exclusive games for each system and decide from that.

Look at the choices of games first.
Then go for the console that you can run the majority of games you want to play.
job done.

The friends I am likely to play online with have a PS3 and I am sold by the games they have. Just wondering where to suggest its bought from.

there are few exclusives these days, and the ones that d oexist there are decent alternatives/
eg:
Xbox v PS3Forza - gt5 ('realistic' racing games)
Halo - Killzone (FPS that isnt CoD/ BF)
Gears of War - God of War (not exactly comprable but meh)If you have a lot of gaming mates then get what they have.
I have a ps3 and rarely find i wish i had an xbox (apart from a few buddies on the dark side)
As for stores, be warned Game are on the verge of going titsup (i imagine gamestation will go with them)
Currys/ comet/ PC World sell, but not exactly good deals.Supermarkets do ok bundles, and are cheaper (generally) for games.
Amazon also do deals, but obvo they are online.
Check out frugal game(r)s [dot] com for deals

also, the xbox is DVD and the PS3 is bluray, this means some xbox games come on 2 ro 3 discs that you have to swap at various intervals in a game.

Frugal gamer is excellent - picked up battlefield from game via them recently with a over a third of the price knocked off.
However, I haven't yet been able to get it to run on this laptop :(

This is probably the best advice really.

Yep, with the modern gen games you'll be playing on line.
I prefer xbox to be honest, the online service is way beyond that of the PS3.

You do pay for it though? Not a fan of Sony and won't be buying anything from them agin, but might be something to consider.

Ok so, skyrim is waning now, at least until there's some DLC for it. I havent played myself since January.
So, next up on the horizon: mass effect 3. I quite simply cannot wait for that game. I'm slightly worried that I've lost my hallowed save file from 2, which might mean I need to go back to 1 and start from scratch. Which i'm not at all bothered by, frankly.

more specific questions now.
do i just go for the biggest hard drive (320GB?)?
What's actually going to be stored there? Do I need it? I will most likely be buying discs rather than downloading whole games.
Some of the one's I've seen online state they have a 3D Bluray Player. Is this worth the extra in case I magically find myself with a 3D TV at some point in the future?
Sorry for the probably obvious questions but the last console I had was an original Xbox.

The hard drive can be used for installing your games on from the discs. (You still have to have the disc in the player!) It is faster for some games that are optimised to run off the hard disk. As for the 3D Blu-ray as I understand it all current PS3s will be getting a software update that will enable the 3D Blu-ray functionality. In fact it might have already happened.
More disc space is better, but there is an obvious price difference it comes down to you really which model you go for.

I'd say get the 360, because you can play copied games on it. Just get your disc drive flashed and then download all the games you want, and burn them to a double layered dvd. You can play online too.
I do still prefer the PS controller, and the free online is great. But the money saved on playing copied games makes up for it. You can't really do that for the PS3.
For the hard drive, yes you can save games to the hdd. It's worth doing because your console runs a lot quieter when playing those games.. I have only 80GB and it's adequate, but then I only ever play FIFA and occasionally Forza or a shooter like Crysis.
If you have a spare 2.5" hard drive with a big capacity, you can always use that.

Best game series since halo

Not so. If you play for story and dialogue it is brilliant.

Wouldn't advise that. When they find out you've chipped your machine, you get banned and loose your gamer score.
If you are going to use a laptop harddrive, (Sata II, I think) change it before you use the existing one as removing it will kill whatever is on there. You'll also need a memory stick with the ps3 drivers to get the new one to work. I think I posted a link near the beginning of this thread about how to do it. If not, psnetwork will have the how to guide.

That could easily be me in my previous job! :D hahaha

I've had this set up for around 2 years and haven't been banned yet. I always have the newest custom firmware on the drive, maybe that helps, or maybe they ban heavier usage users since i'm not on it very often. I don't really know.

This.
Mass Effect isn't for everyone, for sure. To properly enjoy it, you actually need to embrace the core ideal of a role playing game. To play a role. For me, the Mass Effect series has pulled that off better than any other (new) game I've played in recent years.
The combat is great, fast paced, and looks like they've improved it as well; but the beauty of that game series is the dialogue. IMO.
I got to colonel (without grinding) before Christmas and have been playing Skyrim, and nothing else, since then.
I'm going to try to get all the achievements and then pack it in...
