Can't help with the bars I'm afraid but would a nice set of gum wall tyres complement the classic look, and possibly even help to highlight those lovely gold panels?
Thanks everyone for the comments/advice. Will probably go for black tyres though, GP4000S being the front runner at the mo as I can get those in 25c.
I really like the Serotta.
Thanks. So do I. It's rides like a dream.
I disagree with ever change made to it, but it's still a lovely bike.
TBH it was beautiful as it was, but it was sort of built with whatever I had handy at the time (buying the frame wiped out any funds) and although I love that DA chainset and the SRAM running gear I just felt that it was a bit too random. I had a health scare last year which lasted a few months and for a while didn't think I'd see the day out let alone ride again. So I sold a lot of my racing bits as I've decided it wasn't good for someone with a suspect heart. I also sold the Reynolds wheels at that time. Back to health now but spent way too long sat on the sofa pondering what to do with this bike. Just decided to give it a make over (or under depending on your view) as it needed new wheels anyway. I wanted to set it up more for long enjoyable rides rather than short sharp fast ones.
If we are talking about the serotta then I think the new group set will deff look better not sure about the rest especially the brooks
Must admit of all the stuff I've got for it, the Brooks is still main question mark for me. It does look a bit clumsy, but I'm going to wait to see how it all looks once finished.
Damo - I am glad to see that the X2 has gone to a very good home :)
8-) I actually bought it for my touring bike as I need a 100mm for that, but ideally a 90mm for this, but put it on to see how it looked. Did you find the wheels you were after?
If you want a shorter reach I'd look at some compact ones. They don't look fugly and although they're not classic classic, they're more classicly shaped than ergos. 3t's Ergonova are popular, and for a less nodder-like reach there's the Ergosum ;)
Also you might well be able to find round bars with a shorter reach. I half remember zipp's classic round bars having a shortish reach... but I might be imagining it. Have a look here: http://ruedatropical.com/2009/03/road-drop-bar-geometry/
I know you didn't ask for styling points, but asides from the wheels and cranks, I'd switch all the silver and white bits and bobs for black.
That's just what I needed. Thank you. Great link too. I think the Ergosum or similar is exactly what I need. Don't want to go "classic classic" as you say, afterall it's got carbon rims and an 11 speed group, but I want it to look like a modern steel race bike, not a wind tunnel derived carbon fest. Once built I intend to try it with black post and stem as well as silver. I'll post both so you can have a looksie.

I'd have to agree with you, I'm not liking the Brooks idea. It just seems too far out of context with the elegance of the rest, to me anyway. But it is a damned fine corker there dear Sir.

The washer that sits inside of the dropout on my rear hub sheared in half!? Is this just a standard thing i can pick up in Brixton cycles per say? Or are they hub specific?
Dropped by Brixton Cycles this morning and they hooked me up with an end nut FOC. Top shop.

Just got this thing back on the road, i think its a Holdsworth, the bars are holdsworth anyway
It looked like it was pulled out the canal when i started with it, it was rattle canned yellow so i sanded down the rust spots and painted over them with a lime/ish green, then did some splatter thing with a pale purple, think it turned out okay.
It has some weird shifters to, I have never seen anything like them before, any one know anything about them?

Those gear shifters are rad, the first STIs!

BB86>Hollowtech
Canyon told me today that the Ultimate AL EVO frameset uses BB86.
Shimano make an adapter too http://www.competitivecyclist.com/product-components/2012-shimano-bb86-bottom-bracket-road-6758.19.1.html

RE those shifters.
There are a few like that. Are they indexed? If so how many gears? 7 I'd imagine. My Dad has some like that but less plasticy.
I'd love to know how well they work.
I reckon they're Suntour (accushift):

My girlfriends been whinging about her bike recently (quite rightly too, it's a piece of shit). So I thought I'd build her one. She's had a blast on my bike which is an SE Lager but didn't find it very comfortable. Does anyone have any ideas on a frame/saddle/bars for more of a relaxed comfortable ride? Even better if you're selling any parts like this.
-
• #56269
Thought the SE lager was quite a decent bike, just might need different parts for a lady, ladies saddle could help, maybe a Charge ladle?
I also have some swept back bars for sale, quite a relaxed position, got a few stems as well

Noice, those have some of the finest Ti welding I've seen on a frame.
Shame it looks more my size than yours :-)

snipYeah that looks like them.
it has index for the rear derailleur, but just friction for the front
I only test rode it for like 2 miles but i found them quite awkward to use

Just found a set of campag record track hubs on mavic monthill pro rims (tub). and a set of 80s campag(athena?) front and miche rear on gp4s for a few quid.
none in amazibg shape bit still.its just given me the excuse to build a ratty track bike. Theres a new group just taken over the local grass track. ideal!
is it just me though or have cheaper steel track frames just dried up. i thought there had been a price crash in the past few months not a price jump!

So they should, as BB86 is their invention, but I think the KCNC one is nicer and cheaper
