There will be a short hiatus in project Franken-Tandem.
Sadly my brazing torch is not quite up to the job, it was fine with silver, but I'm not happy with the brass. I need to get some oxy/fuel on the job. I don't want to rush and spend on something I'll be quickly unhappy with, so I'm going to have to save up a bit and get one of these:
http://www.thewelderswarehouse.com/Welding/Portapack_-_Semi_Pro.htmlI could also do with a new shed, but we'll see how that goes.
Sorry chaps, but huge thanks for the interest.

Semi pro, eh?

• #33
Yeah, get me.
I couldn't find anywhere that explained which half was pro, and which was bumbling amateur though. Or does this just mean I have to pay myself half rate for any work I do? -

Any news?

Fancy new brazing kit ordered, should be delivered tomorrow.
Yea! Bicycles will be built!! -

I'm thinking of a similar project with some old frames I've got lying about, where did you source the bottom tube from?

What do you look for when buying a brazing kit for a bike? Specific size torch?

NJS stamp, natch

After the NJS stamp, I was looking for something I could get gas for easily, and oxygen that lasted for more than 20 mins. So a MAPP / Turbo gas canister with a proper (but non-rental) oxygen cylinder. Also non-propriety nozzles and fittings, and something I can convert to oxy/acetylene or oxy/propane without having to buy too many extra bits. The kit came with 1,3,5 and 7 size nozzles, so I'll have a go with the 5 and see if I fancy more or less.
It's all very exciting.

Finally! Some! Progress!
Award winning alignment jig!
Award winning posture!
Award winning brazing! It's all a bit ugly, and there is still a hole at the bottom, but it is as solid as anything. The chunky Iron headtube + the sleeved seatpost + the extra gusset on the Iron downtube can really take a lot of heat. Hopefully finishing this bit tomorrow.

Good stuff! I like the jig - gives me ideas for if i ever get round to having a go at making a frame myself

ultimate win
what a project, love the jig too

Nice!
That brazing kit looks good, did you go for oxy propane in the end? Would like to know how long the o2 lasts you. I do most of my brazing at work, but I want to start doing more at home. I hope you have a power file, it will make clean up 10 times faster!

It's a 9 litre oxygen tank, so it should last a few hours, but just little cans of propylene/propane mix, so a bit hotter than just propane, but probably don't last long (the website reckoned 2 hours with a number 7 nozzle). I still had some problems where there was a lot of thick headtube and reinforcing gussets, so have bought some bigger nozzles. Just waiting for some child free / non-dark outside time. Seems to be a rare thing nowadays.
I don't have a power file! Is there one you would recommend?

I take it you found the new set up ok for making fillets with brass? I'm thinking of buying the same setup so interested in your views on it before I splash out, can't wait to get my next frame on the go.
Loving your project, it's very impressive, you certainly don't do things by halves!

A Pompin-Iron, if you will.
omg, love the name. make sure you stick ahnold on the headtube.

Nice, thanks for the info. Might just have to go tig!
As for power files, at work we use air tools, but i've used these B&D ones before and they are ok for the money and seem to keep running. http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=powerfile&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=3807651808055832786&sa=X&ei=ei16T-jSO8i_0QWC1p3cCQ&ved=0CIEBEPICMAA
I love this a bit too much.
Good luck to you. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
