    The drive train is leaving my little brain a bit confused though.

  • Yes! Saw you briefly around tower bridge - doubt you spotted me as I stealth-joined the tweed run for only a half mile or so post bike-tag. Looks so much fun!

  • Out of interest, were you tempted at all to fit a clutch to the little ones chainset (for longer hauls perhaps)? Are there such things that can be engaged/disengaged at will, to prevent your stoker taking advantage of an easy ride? My dad rode a tandem with his wife from Malaysia to Hong Kong, and had motorcycle pillion foot rests welded on the back en route (in Thailand I think, early in the journey) so she could rest her legs... Definite easy ride for one of them!

  • Mudguards and disk brakes. Someone at on-one didn't think that through, so I've had to make some 'interesting' stays.

    Amazing bike by the way, somehow look a million time better before it was painted.

  • I shouldpost pics of the mudguard set-up on the longbike. Had to buy a big P-clip to attach the left stays, opn the front. The bike also did'nt seem to have normal spots on the rear. So needed to get inventive there too.

    This has come out so well BTW.

    Ed, I hadn't thought of fixing the mudguard stay perpendicularly out, like that, before heading back to the guard. It was a bit of luck that The Old Bicycle Showroom had some black 38mm guards in their bargain basement for a fiver, but without stays or stay fittings. I got cheap eyelet fittings from ebay, but found that stay spares were super expensive, so just bought some 3mm stainless rod and bent my own. This meant I had spare length to put some silly bends round the brake.

    Best news of all is that daughter absolutely loves it. She did about 12 miles on Sunday before deciding she'd like to swap to he trailer with her brother.

    Malaysian, I did think of using a freewheeling crank arm, (http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/shun-alloy-104-pcd-4-arm-freewheeling-cranks-170-mm-silver-prod23859/) but I was already confused enough by various drive arrangements I was considering. If the freewheeling side is the lhs, I might consider it later if we start doing longer rides. These do let you get all out of phase which might be weird and confusing.

    I have now the enormo-Brooks B33 for a Rolls. I need to sort some proper pedals out, maybe a bigger chain-ring and get a paint job that will last, but weather permitting will start commuting on her tomorrow! Hurrah!

    My 6 yo goes from being super excited about the long bike. To fearing for his life.

    If we take a tumble in the first few weeks. It'll be back to the trailer :(
