  • Depends if you are a connisseur of dog dicks.

Kanye West Likes Fish Sticks did you say?

    And in other news......

Have we forgotten Mavic? Ok, no longer in production as a true groupset, but so far ahead of its time, that its 1996-1999 Electronic Shifting mechanism has finally been recognised as the way forward by Shimano and Campagnolo.

I accept that my views are not worthy, as I don't actually ride any bike that has more thgan one gear. Sorry. I'll have to go find a correct forum for my meanderings.

  • Back when indexed shifting were just introduced, the winner of the TdF at the time were using friction shifting.

    just echoing andyp's sentiment.

Echoing an others statement... a first time for everything.

    Bang!
    Scoblebashing at it's best!

  • Why does my last name have to be turned into a fucking phrase?

  • scobleconniption™

  • Campag nerd advice required.

Currently have 2007 Veloce, and need to replace some parts. Left shifter is tempremental after a crash a few years back, bottom bracket is a bit wonky and the cassette and chain need replacing.

So new shifters, chain, cassette; mebbe new bb cups and/or ultra-torque bearings or just replace the chainset. Or I could just go the whole hog and get a new groupset.

I'm happy enough with 2007 Veloce, so whereabouts in the current Campag lineup should I be looking ? 2012 Veloce is downgraded isn't it compared to 2007 ?

  • probably not. Maybe 2010 vs 2012, but 2007 is long enough ago that trickle down from the higher tier groups would probably have occurred.

Weigh up what the cost of replacing those parts vs new group is?

    Shifters: £90
    chain: £25
    block: £35
    bb: £30 ?
new cables: £30 (depending what you want)

Is just over £200.. vs £400 for new group?

    disclaimer: all prices approximate

  • I think Campag have gone backwards with Veloce though - in 2007 it was a midish range groupset with Ultra-Torque and Skeleton brakes, now it's bottom of the Campag pile with Power-Torque and normal brakes

Edit - Sometimes I wonder why I stick with Campag, I wouldn't be asking these questions with 105 for example

  • yeah I know - I feel the same a lot of the time. Been told by a few mechanics that my 10 speed record is better than the 11 speed offering available now.

Shimano lower groups get shit loads of trickle down - 2012 105 is like 2010 Ultegra in terms of shifting and braking (not in terms of weight though).

If only it didn't look so damn nice. Garr!

  • I'd say everything got pushed two steps down with the introduction of athena and SR. To be fair to campag, it gives more budget options. So I'd look to go with Athena.

You could fix things up for what Dan quotes. A new chain, cassette, and cables. Is always nice. But if you get a groupset you can upgrade to 11 speed, and enjoy days of indexing adjustments.

That site also has cheap parts.

I love the levers. I can brake with confidence, on hoods, and shift up and down from the drops. Despite having tiny hands.

But the indexing is driving me nuts. Had it singing, if not overly happy in 34:25. Maybe it needsmore bedding in.

  • Is there any difference between the Sram Red:yellow/black/silver varients, or is it purely surface finish?

I am wondering as a Sram Red:Black rear mech is ~£20 cheaper than a Sram Red:Silver rear mech on Fudge if you choose their "build a groupset" option

  • AFAIK its a finish thing. The black is a special edition, as was the yellow (nearly went for that, fat hoods though)

Stripped the cranks/bottom bracket tonight and it's the left crank bearings that have gone. Annoyingly new bearings+bearing puller is pretty much the same price as a new ultra-torque Veloce chainset from Cycling Bargains. New chainset it is !

  • Hurry up SRAM!

  • Dov, if price were the same, current Red Black or Ultegra Di2?

  • you can't buy red now... its so close to its next release.

  • Dov, if price were the same, current Red Black or Ultegra Di2?

Ultegra Di2 but not the crnks or brakes. Go aftermarket for cranks for sure and brakes if you can afford it

  • isnt di2 ultegra a bit chubby on the weight side? and its not much of a looker... im liking srams stance... cables work and can be much lighter...

  • Fucntionality > Looks

  • I prefer the in your face ugliness of modern Shimano, over the 'meh' of Sram anyday.

SRAM's stance is such only because they are behind in developing their electronic shifting system.

  • They are apparently not doing so now an will embark upon a hydraulic system instead. A'la Acros

With the cross compatibility of the Sram 10 speed MTB and road systems. Hydraulic road levers would be amazing.

Still pandering to the small market of bike tinkerers maybe?
