DI2 shifting is super crisp and precise but there is still a fair weight penalty on that system compared to their cable setup. I guess it depends if you think the lag in shift from cables is holding you back? With me its just my legs!
The new red will likely be lighter than DA and record and still be pro level shifting. My guess is its only a matter of time before the UCI's 6.8 limit is revised as its original mandate of preserving safety is slightly obsolete as the tech has developed to make even large framed builds sail under safely. Groupset weight at the moment is less critical so folk don't mind the extra servo weight, but it could all change...

hasn't it been static for over a decade? Its pretty achievable on the top 3 frames in most manufacturers lineups these days with minimal effort and without the need for hypermachined WW parts... lose that and the groupset race gets interesting.

The pressure will mount surely... funding comes from sponsorship and its already a bit silly seeing the top flight frames with lead bungs in the bb spindles to bulk up. seems like it may be in the pipeline as they are moving towards approved safety testing

Huh? Lots of people agree with it. Exposed cables are better. 7800 shifting is better.

50g? If you're that concerned about weight you'd already be at the 6.8kg limit and be gluing spanners to your bikes.

I remember looking at the pro Wilier bikes. With integrated BB, intergrated seatpost, intergrated headset etc. But still just over 1Kg. The team just add a SR groupset, saddle, stem+bars, pedals, and wheels. Considering you'd want the lightest wheels possible. If it wasnt for the weight of the mechanical doping. They'd all be breaking the regs.

Di2 will not help you here. Madskillz might but you need to get them - I hear there's some bloke in Clerkenwell who will sell them to you but the price is very steep.

That total cycling link also measures the medium and claims the cables can't be cut whereas the bloke I linked to has customised his setup by cutting cables AND internally mounting the battery.

Old post, but you are the first person I've come across who agrees with me on this. The exposed shifter cable design is far superior in lightness/crispness of shifting. I regularly service older Tiagra 9-speed rental bikes and every time I dial the shifting in I think, why did Shimano ever abandon this design?
The tight turn the shift cable has to make in the 'new' design shifters accounts for a lot of extra friction/ loss of crispness. Also changing cables has become much more of a pita, not because the shift cables are under the tape, but because threading an inner wire through the shifter was meant to be done by Japanese midgets only.
