I'd add checking the seatpost isn't stuck.
Everything else can be replaced/fixed.

Dura Ace/Crane?
mmm lovely jubbly, but 1st gen DA is a bit pricey at the mo.

very nice. Just got mine back from them. I would build with veloce 10speed, looks good and performs better than any nos groupset and doesn't cost the earth.
1970 Olympic refurb'd
not sure what's best to build this with. Campagnolo seems unnecessary since i think the Olympic was/is their basic model. So far i have the Tange/Mercian headset and mafac brakes
was planing early shimano 600 because when i checked the date code in the shop i thought it said 78 but it's 70
rear dropout width measured inside is 127/8mm and it's built for 27s. Not sure whether it would have been 5 or 6spd in 1970any suggestions for period stuff appreciated

New seatpost, saddle, headset, stem and bars.
After starting track cycling at the beginning of the summer (mainly for training) I realised my deep track bars weren't really
necessarily and I'd probably benefit more from an 'endurance' bar. The bars are 26.0 but the stem is 26.4, I know some people (inc Hilary stone) swear by it being kosher,
I still feel a little worried. May have to see how it gets on. -

I finished my Gitane singlespeed cyclocross project recently:
The frame was powdercoated RAL 5025 by a company here in Berlin (http://www.color-your-bike.de/) who were expensive but highly recommended for quality. The RAL colour wasn't quite the French Blue of Gitane but still looks very nice. I also had them add a bottle cage mount.
Components: San Marco Rolls saddle, Campagnolo Record seatpost, Cinelli 1R stem and Cinelli Top bars (would like to try a slightly shorter stem and maybe the 42mm bars are a bit too wide), Tektro CR720 Canitilevers and RL520 Levers
Wheels are an old set of Mavic Cxp22s with Ambrosio fixed hubs (I couldn't afford to go as far as a new set unfortunately) with 32mm Challenge Griffo Clinchers which are great.
For the drivetrain a Shimano 18T freewheel, KMC 710SL chain and Stronghlight Track chainset (44T).New Velo Orange French threaded Headset and Bottom Bracket.
Can't wait to get on some trails now with it!

I love your bike junoface.
I'm putting it in the porn thread. Anyone who disagrees >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Have you had it down some trails yet? 44x18 would be too much for me off road. 39x18 is about right IMO.

That is lurvely jambon. Although never had a chance to ride a GT track frame, I am a fan of them visually and would like to build one up at some point. This is a nicely simple and stunning example.

@miro_o - thanks!i'm flattered.
I was hoping to get out this last weekend but I've been ill. I did one ride with Winston off here around the lake where he lives (NE Germany) the weekend before, it was unsuitable for a road bike but not really proper trails. So I've not tested it in anger yet.
44-18 (66 GI) is a bit high - but it's incredibly flat round Berlin, so it might not be too bad. I'm not sure I can go much smaller than 44 with a 144BCD crank (I think there is a TA one?) anyway. Maybe I should investigate 20T freewheels

You can get a 42t TA chainring and it works fine. 41t is pushing it though

126mm OLN = 6-speed
If you want something that looks like a mid-range 1970 bike, you should be thinking about now-defunct European brands. Maillard hubs, Simplex or Huret gears, Atax bars and stem, Nervar cranks. If you want something that will be a pleasure to ride, just stick 2011 Veloce on it like a sensible chap.

Nice apart from the brake lever.
Not really. Its a pretty simple bike.
Just cheack for any signs of a crash. Turn anthing, that shoud turn, to cheak bearings. Wiggle stuff that should'nt move, to check for wear. Plus maybe take a spanner to the rear axle bolts to check they thread OK. Can be a real weak spot with cheap wheels, if the wheels been moved alot.
