  • i'm putting together a run-around from bits of old dawes galaxy

    • just need to get mudguards, a 6 speed freewheel, chain and brake / gear cables

  • nice tyres, did you clean them?

  • nope! they'll get a clean when the bike gets a clean i should think.

  • nearly there....

I haz shimano 600 6spd block. Barely any use (maybe had 1000mile on it), 13 to 30t.ratio though (touring ratios).

  • not finished yet , i just build it for today bike exhibition for Repaint class :)

  • Finally swapped the bars and levers on my Bob Jackson last night but taped them in such a hurry to leave the house that it looks a right mess - hence no photos yet.

Anyway, I've switched from 44cm Noodles with Tektro levers to 42cm Soma Hwy One with SRAM S500 levers. I used Upstart's (IIRC) fix for the uncabled lever, with a biro spring and a short length of cable with a ferrule crimped on. The ferrule protrudes from under the hood a bit so I might take another look at that fix at some point. Or just paint it black.

Effective reach to the hoods has come down by about 2cm (which is what I wanted) and the compact curve is much nicer on my hands. Success. Only thing I don't like is the socking great hole in the underside of the S500 hoods where the shift gubbins has been left out.

Needs gumwalls, bartape, flipping of the bars (upwards), saddle level, more seatpost, less stem... then you may exhibit it.
    Unless you're in Indonesia. :)

Also use whiter tape covering the valve holes thats a bit cream

  • Today I have been mostly fitting a new headset to the Azonic

Did you need to use the additional shim/seal type thing?

sure :) thanks that's gonna be my homework tomorrow , yeah im planning to use the bar on the rossin fork with stem on it , but unfortunately its not finished yet ..

any advice for 650c tubular gumwall ?

To make a gap between the upper bearing cap and top cup? Yes.

  • Thats the one.
Seems nicely manufactured so I'm hoping it lasts well, bit concerned about mud getting in through the gap. We'll see how it holds up.

  • hi all

    your recommendations please:
thinking of replacing the bars on my road bike for something a bit more comfortable.
currently i have giro d'italia's, which are ok, but i'd like a slightly shallower drop, and a more anatomical / ergonomic curve, (preferably without having to switch stems too: 26.4).

what are the options, and what's best etc?

    ta.

These are the only compact bars available in 26.0 sizing, a modern shaped bar with a 26.4 clamp will be nigh on impossible to find I should imagine

I've got an old pair of PRO anatomical bars in 44 I'd be happy to part with but they're not compacts, can't really tell what you're after though, do you want: (I think that's the difference between Ergo and Anatomical but I'm probably wrong)
    a) Compact bars

    b) Ergo bars

There's also the Soma Hwy One (from SJS) that I just fitted to my Vigorelli, if a silver bar is preferable. 26.0 clamp again though. 26.4 is old Italian stuff, no? Not much chance of ergo/compact bars in that size.

Finding a more compact bar on 26.4 will be very hard if not impossible.
If you really want more compact your best bet is to change to 26.0 (if you want quill).

For reference all the 26.0 compact bars I've have come across:

    Deda 215 - Drop:142 Reach:86
    Deda Newton - Drop: 135 Reach:80
    Deda Piega - Drop:143 Reach:87
    Bontrager SSR VR-C Drop:125 Reach: couldn't find
    Soma Highway one - Drop:130 Reach: 75
    Nitto M106 Neat - Drop: 128 Reach 78
    Origin-8 Pro-lite compact handlebar Drop: 120 Reach: 70

The last 3 are hard to find online but SJS may be able to order in a soma highway one for reference.
I Was in the same position as you this week and have been looking searching all over for a 26.4 and 26.0 compact bar.

  • SJS can special order the Hwy One if you call them up. It might not be on their site. I wouldn't bother with the Nitto M106 unless you want to spend three figures, and wait months for Tokyo Fixed to get it in (I'm still waiting for mine, but because I'm stupid I'm still going to get some for the fancy bike).

  • I have some spare deda 215 bars I would sell for a tenner. Pretty scratched up though.

  • Also ITM Super Italia pro 260 may be worth a look.
Saw it on this rather nice listing

  • First bike bought from ye olde bay. A nice quintana roo superform TT machine. 650c front and rear.
    photos

A bit of triathlon history you've got there - http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/features/superform.html

  • Forgot to mention- I re-cabled with Alligator iLink, 4mm for the brakes and mini-iLink for the gears, and it was a pleasure to use.

Getting the liner threaded through was the only slight irritant, but being able to shorten/lengthen/test/repeat until cable lengths were spot on was great.

I can also now add some links to the cables when I change the bars again- which is undoubtedly going to happen during my ongoing search for the right set.

Shifting felt considerably more "crisp", brakes felt much as before- which was very good to start off with. Real test will be on the carbon rims, as i've done most of my mileage on those and I was on the Open Pro's for my test ride.
