i have been doing yoga and pilates for years, a fair bit of cycling - still no six pack
i am not an ectomorph - have given up on the holy grail of the six pack
guys with ripped muscles occasionally try to do a yoga or pilates class, but despite having lots of external muscle the middle aged dears who have done the classes for a while can out do them in most of the exercises that require core strength
functional muscle > beach muscle

I am insufficiently ripped, godamnit

I thought the key to a six pack was squats, cleans and deadlifts?
As you've seen, I carry more of a keg than a 6pack at the minute... I reckon I could get one though, whether I can be arsed is another question.

There is a sixpack there, it's just covered in blubber.
I suspect I may have to up the running.

Visible abs is just about having extremely low bodyfat in your midsection. There is nothing else to it. Some people just dont get very fat, these people can eat like pigs and still have some abs when approaching their 50's.
Whilst other people will have to starve themselves and do ab exercises all day long to get anything to show.
Visible abs does not demonstrate any kind of athletic prowess, anoerexic/malnourished 10 year old boys often have "abz".

I'm just doing weights - following "Starting Strength" by Mark Riptoe.
I haven't lost any weight as I am following the recomposition plan, where you have 20% more calories than you should on training days, and 20% less on non-training days, so you stay the same weight, but put on muscle at the same time as loosing fat.
If you were interested in loosing weight, you could opt for a +10%/-20% split
You realise that you are "not doing the programme" right? Well not strictly at least. SS is a beginner weight training programme designed to pack on as much useful muscle mass in the shortest time possible - in the most simple way.
This involves more than a bit of gluttony. Focusing so hard on staying lean and restricting diet will kill the longeivity of the "programme" and the easy novice strength gains you can get by simply eating enough.
I did it a couple years back, went from 64kg to 80kg and everyone kept telling me it was amazing how much weight I had LOST!!!
I did not restrict my diet in anyway though.

Isn't it pretty much scientifically proven™ that interval training is better for fat loss than long, steady jaunts?
Better for whom? HIT is not for novices, for one thing. Anybody who is both significantly overweight and unfit is much better of with gentle cardio; vigorous and stressful exercise could injure them and will certainly stimulate hunger pangs. It's a useful technique for people who are a) already fit and b) self-disciplined.

This is the simple truth. Coach Rippetoe's programmes are all about strength gains, not weight loss, something he is very direct about. I mean, this is the guy who pretty much invented GOMAD.

I went from 70kg to 84kg, but was getting a little chunky at the same time. I more than doubled my squat, and it seemed to rid me of the back pain I was suffering from as well - which was awesome.
I got to a point where I was happy with the size and strength, but not with the added blubber you get from eating a family sized pack of peanut m&ms for breakfast. Because I am too lazy to research another program (this one is basic, easy to remember and works) I have just stuck with it after starting leangains.

Have a look at MadCow Intermediate. It still has you making gains every week, but isn't such an aggressive programme and is going to punish you less for trying to moderate your diet.

Anyhow, update.
I'm losing weight steadily at the moment.
Nothing special in particular. Gym 4 mornings on 1 morning off, climbing twice a week, epic hikes on weekends, and eating sensibly and studying till it hurts (meaning no snacking!)Also, just signed up to a weight loss/ muscle burning study at the hospital which involves a fair bit of controlled excercise for the next 6 months.
Its to test L-Carnitine, for those who care, and its of course double blind- 1/3 on flavoured water, 1/3 on carbs, and 1/3 on carbs + L-Carnitine.So I'll be getting a couple of muscle biopsies and DEXA scans and shit like that, depending on passing the medical on Wednesday... Fingers crossed- I could do with the training and the money it would provide (and its all cycling- win!)

Hadn't spotted this forum>thread before, so far been very useful just plodding through it.
Until now I've never had a problem with weight, I could do what I want, live how I want, eat what I want when I want and only excersize was purely for enjoyment (gym sessions were only to keep in touch with mates etc).
But now I'm pushing mid 20s I guess my epic metabolic rate is failing me. Though for the past 5years I have been MUCH more careful around processed foods/ salts/ sugar (Used to be a cake fiend) which has probably done me well until now.
My 'about right' weight is 70-75kg (~11st), I'm 5'9" light built up top (though used to have good shoulders and back from rugby from 12-19yrs) but heavy built legs (skinny jeans can >>>>>>>).
I've always cycled a fair amount and I do notice being a bit lighter in summer from more miles and stocking up after winter but never this much.Figure not having a full time job/ point in life means I currently eat a GOOD deal less food (volume/calories/crap content) than I ordinarily would, but not having a structured day/ week means I am doing far less than ever before.
Last summer was nudging 80kg, then lost a bit towards this spring (april'11) then this summer wasn't too bad as was bashing out about 450-500miles a month riding on my own and in groups on road bike and lots of long distance dog walking (all day jobs getting ragged around 'fells by 2x fit & boystrous border collies).
End of summer till now (sept > today) gone from about 80kg - 88kg VERY quickly. Dunno if I'm going crazy but can almost feel the fat jumping on by the day, yet I eat next to fuck all (only crap food being a smattering of peanut butter in mornings).Bit worried about it TBH, almost feel I am at a tipping point, i.e. if I start gaining more now, by spring I'll have too much on to be able to move it again and how bad it is for me.
Only recent change is essentially stopped riding, I'm back down to what I used to do, i.e. ride when and how I feel like it on my own, on MTB and for random distances/ exertions. Stopped riding with yet another club after being literally left for dead on a mountain pass in pretty much a rain storm (50mph+ winds gusting more, rain so bad cars were pulling over) and very nearly got into serious trouble in a remote location; and since then just CBA'd to ride road anymore, too many wankers.
Wonder if anyone has had similar issue? Basically how do I go from here, need to kerb the weight ideally without riding, I used to fellrun but thanks to a pair of good knee injuries unlikely I can take that up again.

How about only riding at night? That's what I do - very few HGVs then. Puncture proof Panaracer Crosstown tyres make for a very dead ride but it's better than lingering on the roadside in Catford at 1am. Or maybe swimming?

Approaching end of the first week of giving a diet a proper crack. Will weigh myself on Friday morning - 14 stone 2 pounds last week. Too heavy. Too much belly.
Can feel the weight loss already - not eating between meals, haven't had a beer in a few days. Can't pretend I couldn't murder a sweaty burger during every waking moment, or gnaw my own arm off. But still, it's fun.
No it isn't.

I'm a regular on the apples and grilled chicken in the week, filthy Turkish and cake on a Friday merry-go-round.

my training regime is somewhat different to yours, but i think one of the best things for understanding what i'm putting in my body has the been the myfitnesspal app (also available as a website) simply putting in food eaten and exercise done gives a clear breakdown about where the junk calories might be coming from.
you dont put on 8kg from eating nothing with the occasional bit of peanut butter so it will help you to realise that either you're kidding yourself about what you are eating or that you should probably go and see a doctor.
you're not pregnant are you?!
I've been kicking my own arse for over a year now- and still no fucking six pack!
I have a four pack. That's fucking useless.
I think lipo has to be allowed now- it's not like I've not been trying?
