cheers, yes for cantilever. it's an old Shimano one.
SJS do one for cheap that is the same, rather less lovely. but I noticed that most models are one-sided, like the pricey Surly one or the Tektro. so does that mean mine will be adequately functional even if one side is broken?

No, because the load path is not directed in line with the remaining leg, unlike the modern single sided designs.

ah I get it - the single-sided ones are centred to the seat post, right?... silly me.

Does a test rides thread exist? I can't seem to find one, unless I've missed it somewhere. Anyone?
If not, I'll start one.

Hey guys, currently im running 44-17 on a brakeless and strapless bike, still however finding it easy, but i recently broke my chainring and have decided to go bigger and maybe get some straps for my pedals, do you think 52-17 would be a wise move? cheers! :)
-
• #19258
so how do you stop?
-
• #19259
resisting the pedals and skidding, i have legs of a demon.

By strapless, do you mean that you do not have toeclips / pedal straps? If so, there are quite a lot of people who would be of the opinion that by riding a brakeless bike without foot retention you are playing fast and loose with your safety and that of other road users.
If, however, you are a lazy Sunday afternoon troll then I claim my £5.

Too late. buggery.

when you broke your chainring, did your chain not jump? really, how did you stop?
-
• #19263
his demon legs have claws, so he can grip the pedals

I think cycle training would be a wise move. After that, and after fitting some brakes and foot retention, 44/17 is a perfectly sensible gear for general riding.

It is true that i have no clips or straps, i never bought any at first because i thought they would be more dangerous only thinking of what to do if i need to put my foot down in a panic.
my chainring is bent so when i pedal the chain goes loose at a certain point, so not safe at all, i didnt even realise until it came off, and to stop i just put my foot on the backwheel (I used to BMX)

I'm not even going to touch on the whole putting your life in jeopardy thing, but I ride 52/16 and really it's too high for general riding around but I ride with brakes and toe clips and straps. I would suggest a similar approach if you are thinking of going to a ratio anywhere near that.

Are there shops where one can use a paper shredder?
-
• #19268
am assuming he rides fucking slowly, trick bmx's tend to have a a low gearing (hence they can stop using a foot and no brakes)
to be fair, fixed without foot retention means the bike is probably a shoreditch poodle, a hipster fashion accessory to be seen as he struts/minces around with it

Depending on how much stuff you have to shred, why not ask anyone who works somewhere with one to shred stuff for you?

What's your opinion on helmets?
-
• #19271
Here's a question for y'all:
What are peoples thoughts on getting a loan to purchase a bike?
Has anyone done it before, or are you all a load of piggy bank abusers?
-
• #19272
I've done it. My previous employer offered their own in-house scheme, as many do. They had a favourable rate of repayment too, so I was never too out of pocket. If you're able, take the opportunity.

What's your opinion on helmets?
Funnily enough i wear a helmet everywhere i go, as that is just plain logic in regards to safety, but as a new fixie rider i just assumed clips or straps were pretty dangerous.
Surely you guys cant go around turning their noses up to everybody who asks a question? If you really cared for my safety, you would have answered my question instead of debating whether im a hipster or not?

Falling over because you can't get your foot out of a strap (unlikely to ever happen unless you're really drunk) is going to be a lot less painful than falling over because you hit a car / lorry when you can't brake properly...

Also, I ride 52-17 in London with straps and a front brake, its good for me.. It means I can get up to a reasonable speed without spinning like hell.
what is this rear-brake-cable-stop/holder thing called, and where can I get one that is less broken?
