  • I didn't see it last night Matt, I'll have another look tonight.

  • Ok so it would be needed to be writen into the software, but instead of bye's one team (who would have had a bye) should just have to play the next team that would have had a bye. I'd like to see the logic behind the way teams are selected, but i'm sure it would be possible. Obviously that only really works with an even number of rounds, with an odd number of rounds and an odd number of teams you have to have a bye for someone.

Possibly, but only if it works out an appropriate partner. The trouble yesterday was we had teams with byes who were in quite different places in the table, so the match up would not only be unfair to the team who should play someone in a similar position, rather than the other end of the table, but also it would be unfair to other teams, if a team at the top suddenly has an easy game.

I'm a little confused about the logic behind challonge, maybe it was the byes fucking it up yesterday. The main principle of Swiss to to play the closest team you've not played yet (and that that game doesn't produce impossible games in that round, or future rounds). Sometimes yesterday it seemed to choose strange pairings.

  • Thanks London, very fun day of polo....well done to the johns for arranging a great tournament.
Great playing with lee and luca, was really pleasure guys, cambridge really representing recently. after 1 hours sleep and an epic day of polo i am really feeling it now, body and mind lacking today. but totally worth it, the hoodie we won is keeping me warm now!

Bad news about jack-heal up quick dude!

Yeah it's the logic behind challenge that I'm interested in, for that reason.

I imagine it selects the team with a bye by just dropping the bottom team or something? It wouldn't be too hard to have the selection of bye's based on who was bye'd in the previous round?

  • The main principle of Swiss to to play the closest team you've not played yet (and that that game doesn't produce impossible games in that round, or future rounds). Sometimes yesterday it seemed to choose strange pairings.

H-Bomb: Someone once mentioned to me that Challonge finds the two teams that have the most similar results and pairs them before looking for the next closest pairing and so on. In that way it would make sense that the bye team would be the team with the no other team very similar to them in results (the team that the software already places the least similar to anyone else)? If that's the case, there'd be little-to-no-point in arbitrarily playing two bye teams against each other as all you'll do is upset the SR process for those teams (they'd have skewed standings based on playing a non-similar team).

TLDR: Playing bye teams off against each other may not work as the teams can come from anywhere in the standings.

  • Ok if that's the way it does it then the way I'd fix it would be to have the team that didn't play in the first round twice in the second round.

Ie, in a 5 team Swiss, the first round is
    A v B, C v D, with E having a bye
Challenge would then select the best games for The five teams plus an extra game for E let's say it came up with:
    A v C, B v E, D v E.
The then the other team that wOuld have had a bye would be D (prob) the game between 'bye' teams is D v E.

This only messes up the logic of challonge if E were the furthest team from any other (which is quite likely in the first round but less so as the games progress).

  • Thanks, John. My mallet was in the fence of the west court, south end, but someone took it out. I figured it would be laying around but never found it.

Yup... How much do you need it? Do I need to post it, or can it wait till your next in London?

  • Louis, I owe you beer still. Next weekend? Maybe Wednesday.

  • If you're down on Wednesday that would be good, but no rush.

  • Thanks to Tim and Josh for being awesome team mates, I had a shit ton of fun resulting in me barely being able to move all day.

Also thanks to everyone who organised things, great day.

  • Well done Spring Break (et al)!

Periods aren't gross, they're a fact of life.

and periods are kind of, the source of life(?).

  • and periods are kind of, the source of life(?).

Being perioded out would be a pretty dire start to life...

  • Science fail... ;)

Being perioded out would be a pretty dire start to life...

  • scientifically sound, not sure on the term perioded though

  • It's in common parlance.

  • ... and periods are kind of, the source of life(?).

I guess, in that periods are to source of life as breakfast is to eggs.

  • Thanks to the organisers and spring break for an ace day. It's a shame that Joe couldn't make it over from France. If anyone picked up a small thermos flask it's mine ( not that one Mark ) And it would be nice to get it back

  • Release the orange koozie.

  • hey thanks all for a great tourney. i enjoyed playing a lot but alas my skillz had evaporated somewhat by semi final stage. next time...oh yeah probably Cambridge avec Konijn and Paul. See most of yous at Hells Belles.
