Android phones, apps and tablets

  • It's just for storage space. If storage isn't an issue, installing to the phone is better. Some apps won't work installed to the SD card.

  • Does anyone have a solution- I'm not sure if this is Android challenge or Asus transformer issue. Is there a 'shortcut' for Home, as in go-to-top-page? Something like touching the upper boarder of an iPhone. Its lame but I miss that on this compared to my iPhone...

It depends on your phone, but on my Galaxy SII, if you use 3 fingers to scroll, it'll take you to the top/bottom of the screen. This may only be a Samsung Touchwiz tweak, and only in certain programs,

  • It may not be the right place at all, but here is a serious threat to Apple, and maybe to Google also, and the possible saviour of Blackberry. Its called the CARBYN OS. Its built in HTML5, and is mightily impressive.

  • Err... but you need an OS to run that "OS"?

    Hmm. Colour me sceptical.

  • Mmm hmm.. how does HTML5 get the phone radio to make a call? Oh, it can't.

It's an operating environment at best. A pretty skin into which you can "install" HTML5 "apps".

    Indeed.

Yeah at best it's like Chrome Browser, a browser based sandbox for your platform. Developers write for it and the app will run on all the hosts, more of a companion than a replacement for your OS.

Developers are already switching to writing HTML5 sites that are targeted at specific devices because of Apple's in app subscription charging. e.g FT, WSJ other news sources etc So I can't see what Carbyn gives you.

  • OK so I reset my Desire last night. Some thoughts...

Titanium Backup - I already had this installed from a previous attempt to root. I upgraded to the Pro edition for £4.79 because I read that you can backup to Dropbox - mistake, you can't :( pretty miffed as I missed the 15 (count them) minute window of opportunity you get to get a refund from the Market.

App Brain - restoring your Apps back to the phone is frustrating and confusing - bit of a mess really! The way it works is that when you synch, it creates a list called on the phone or something similar. In the web app, you'll see your apps all listed, but unless you add these back into the named list, or create another list and merge the apps with that, it won't see your apps when you try and synch. Also, it's time consuming because when you go to the App Brain app on the phone itself to execute the syncs and reinstalls, it still takes you to the Market, where you have to accept the terms for each app and install - 173 apps later, I was so shitting bored I could have thrown the phone out the window.....

Also, don't make the same mistake I did and assume that an app called SMS backup allows you to restore your texts back, because it fecking well doesn't.....

SD move is an essential app

Even after all that, I don't think the phone is any faster - my GF's Wildfire is MUCH faster (although she has nothing on it)

  • Backup to SD card?

    173 apps? For serious?

  • How can I restore my backups from Dropbox if my SD card failed or my phone got stolen ?

    • With Titanium Backup 3.6.4 (or above):

    • If your backup folder is empty, then with you can simply hit the "Sync with Dropbox" button to download all backups from Dropbox back onto your phone.

    • With older Titanium Backup versions:

    • Do not use the "Sync to Dropbox" button now: it's a one-way sync and would erase your Dropbox files because you have no backups on the phone.

    • You need to copy the "TitaniumBackup" folder back from Dropbox onto your SD card:

    • On a computer, login to Dropbox on the web

    • Click on the "TitaniumBackup" folder

    • Click on "Download folder".

    • Extract the ZIP file that you just downloaded.

    • Move the resulting "TitaniumBackup" folder from your computer onto your SD card

    • Make sure USB mass storage is disabled (ie: your phone is disconnected from the computer)

    • Launch Titanium Backup and it should see your backups.

  • Oh it may not be 173 apps, it's a combo of apps and user data/system data in Tit Backup

  • Ti Backup worked fine for me when I was trialling custom roms on the Desire. I was backing up to SD though. Even better was migrating from DHD to Sensation.. the apps just appeared after sync. Awesome.

I used My Backup Pro before having root access on the Desire, btw

  • the paid for titanium is good as you can batch restore apps and their data, sms backup + lets you back and restore from a gmail account

  • At last! An Android phone with great battery life? The Huawei Honor, due in 2012, is quoted as having a 3 day life. The battery is a 1900MAh unit. The other specs are nothing special, with the RAM being the disappointing bit, at only 512MB. Still, for those that want 2 days battery life with work and social activities thrown in, it seems worth a punt. I said 2 days, as I am sure 3 days would be with not very much use at all.

    Technical Specs

    Android Gingerbread 2.3.5 OS
    1900mAh battery
    1.4 Ghz processor
4.0 inch 16M 16:9 true color FWVGA capacitive touch screen

Support Class 10 GPRS and EDGE
    3G HSPA+ DL 14.4 Mbps/UL 5.76 Mbps

Arrows Z - ISW11F for the Japanese market, made by Fujitsu Toshiba Mobile Communications, is a waterproof/splashproof phone (to IPX5/8 classification) with a 13.1 MP camera, and other good specs. I am doubtful if this will achieve a worldwide release, but we can hope.

  • Amazon's Kindle Fire is being made official tomorrow, Just waiting for the first hands on to hit around this time tomorrow.

Apparently Froyo, no marketplace and a bunch of amazon specific apps.

  • The PlayBook is very well made- bodes well for this.

    I am extremely excited.

Yeah Quanta the company that makes the Playbook for RIM, are making this for Amazon. Internally it is supposed to be very similar too. Sound like its going to be very hackable.

  • looking for higher capacity battery for my Desire S, is there's anything I should watch out for? (i.e. dodgy battery).

  • Loads of the cheap batteries on Ebay seem to be shit and much lower capacity than stated. Both the ones I got for my Hero were worse than the stock one though stated to be better.

Bought a spare battery for my dell streak for about a tenner last year. Lasts as long as the dell one. Can't vouch for other makes.

  • Does anyone have experience with a way of making the volume louder on an android phone? I have a Desire Z, but solutions for other phones may work?

  • Phone call volume or speaker?

  • Sorry, headset volume. By comparison, my iPod plays music deafeningly (to others) loud, but my phone is frustratingly quiet. It's like when there's a jukebox in a pub and the music is just not loud enough to be heard properly over the background noise. If I'm sitting in my quiet room then it's plenty loud but for the whole point of headphones are for when I don't want to listen to every other cunt's conversation or the sound of the train. It's infuriating on the train!

I can't use my iPod because I'm too lazy to take it out of my car's glovebox.

  • ^ Poweramp - at least you can tweak the EQ and push the gain ;)

    I'm surprised nobody's discussed this further. £130! Ok it's only got a 7" screen, but it's IPS, there's a dual core processor, 8Gb internal storage. And it's only £130!

The content offer is fantastic, although you'll have to pay for it, of course. All the synching happens wirelessly, whisper sync remembers where you were in a book or film, everything backed up seamlessly in the cloud, it's quite a compelling offer in itself. But what will inevitably happen, presumably, is someone will hack it to run a non-modified version of Android, and then things could really get interesting.

Could this be a later version? Could it run that with the hardware spec it has?
