Android phones, apps and tablets

  • Android is CPU hungry and CPU will always be the culprit when it comes to battery usage.
I am not sure about the latest Blackberry models but about 5-6 month ago all had under 600-800Mhz CPUs.
I have Android Froyo (2.2) running on ~600Mhz CPU tablet and it's sluggish but the battery life is superb. All of the latest Android phones have over 1Ghz CPUs, some dual-core, including my Nexus S which lasts for a day and a half.
So even when taking screen power usage out of equation Android phones will always be more battery hungry.
Andy is right, Android is not designed with CPU/power usage efficiency in mind, you have a Linux kernel and Java VM on top.
but it is a great open (relatively) platform for easy development of apps which is of a great benefit to end users and to Google and it's also attractive to manufactures so everyone wins.
Google have driven mobile hardware technology to progress immensely in the last two years which again benefits end users. But battery technology is yet to progress.

Eh? Screens use way more power than the CPU.

Blackberry CPUs are low because they don't do anything.

Did you consider that the tablet battery life is better because the battery is much larger than the size of the one in your phone and the phone is out and about trying constantly to maintain a connection to cell towers whereas your tablet is probably in your lap for 10min whilst youporn serves up the freshest of fresh?

Android and the underlying linux kernel have power management facilities in place. Andy might be right in saying it's not the most optimised (it wasn't designed and built ground up for mobile) but to say "Android is not designed with CPU/power usage efficiency in mind" is bollocks.

  • Yeah, what he said. Screens use way more power than the cpu.

Considering I have the screen on the lowest setting, and it's off in my pocket most of the time:

  • (Yeah, that's right, I just took a screenshot on my Sensation, without an app or hack. What of it?)

    :)

  • caustic is fantastic - thanks for posting here. first app I'm considering paying pennies for full version #tightwad

it also seems in caustic that the desire hd can go louder than the music player allows, is there a way to unlimit that, or a better music player?

    What app is this?

  • What app is this?

It's not an app. Settings > About phone > Battery > Battery use

  • It's not an app. Settings > About phone > Battery > Battery use

    Ahh cheers!

Having probs with my sensation battery. It's not even lasting 6 hours of moderate use and I've turned all background syncs off

  • how did you take a screenshot?

  • I discovered it by accident, but apparently it's been in Android since 2.3.3.

On my sensation I hold the power button and press the home button.

  • hm, didn't work for me

Downloaded it last night. Not loaded it yet though.
I was a massive Rebirth user years ago so might get 5min of fun out of this (before going back to pornhub.com, obviously)

  • Ahh cheers!

Something very wrong there. Mine lasts 20 hours of my normal (lowish) use.

  • Sounds identical to my Nexus battery though- maybe some HTC batteries are duffers.

  • anybody using https://www.htcsense.com ??

You can remotely locate your phone if lost and also lock it or wipe all data.

Another useful feature is that you can divert all messages and phone calls if you leave you phone at home!

Yeah I thought that - might need to return it.

  • Give "JuiceDefender" a go. Switches shit off when it's not needed. The non-pay version increases my battery life by about 50%.

  • Someone mentioned JuiceDefender in the first few pages of this thread. This second recommendation is enough for me to download it. Cheers.

Yep. It was a large selling point when the DHD and DZ were released.

  • Yeah I thought that - might need to return it.

Run a process checker to see what's running - you could have a rogue app chewing loads of cpu.

  • "WatchTower", I think is a good one

  • "WatchTower", I think is a good one

cheers - will try it out

Just signed myself up to it!

I noticed a setting on my phone; something about being able to remotely track / lock / wipe my phone. But I never could figure out how to do this. I guess this is the answer. Cheers!

  • Is Samsung Galaxy plus new?

Waiting to pick up a sensation :D (My address is kinda non existent apparently)

    Lilly girl.

I went to O2 to pay for a repair, I tried the Galaxy S II, it was awesome, also the Sensation too.

In the end - choose which UI and feel you liked the best, I'm guessing you went for the Sensation because you liked how it is.

???? I wasn't interested in the Galaxy plus OR asking advice on it. I was merely asking if it was new, as not noticed on the market before.
It is getting really annoying you're now constantly giving me advice when I haven't straightforward asked for it?
Only thing I did was ask people on my fb who I know have one phone or the other their OWN experience of it rather than the (awesome) tech advice I get on here.
I've already played with both phones, and also other android recent releases - just not the Galaxy plus one.

I have also never gotten people coming on this thread (trolling) and going "Shoulda got an iphone, or a blackberry, or have that age old debate about this and that vs android) - we have this thread FOR a reason!

    • Rant over.

I now have a sensation in my hands, wasn't expecting it until tomorrow, but had to pop to the vodafone shop to fix an error that the overseas staff made last night when I spoke about my address changes, and it had literally arrived an hour before I got there.

Haven't yet to play with it though! Which I will do soon as the boyf gets back :P

    rah rah rah

Steady on, I'm saying go for the one you liked, it's as simple as that, and no I didn't read you went for the Sensation.
