  • My lovely Sapim Strongs just arrived, along with a lovely handwritten note from the seller. It appears that they're doing it out of their back room so to speak, and the spokes are cheaper than anywhere else i found. Recommended.

I wanted strongs, but nowhere did them in the right length for my wheel. I ended up with db ACIs, which are thankfully taking a battering fine so far though. Cool story I know.

  • DB ACIs snap a fair amount, I bought a full box (144) so it's not caused me any massive problems but it can be annoying at times. Bonus is that they're pretty cheap.

Where did you get yours? Think I paid 50p per spoke for mine from Spa Cycles... Gonna get some more for my new front wheel...

  • Got mine from sdeals.com, 52p per spoke, everywhere else was 55p.

  • If spoke length calculators give me 286.6 length will 286mm spokes be ok with 12mm nipples or should I go for 288? Since I'm gonna build the wheel myself I'm thinking I'll skip crows foot and try 4x, am I right in thinking this will give smaller gaps than 3x?

  • What hubs/rim/spoke count? If it's a 48h track hub and a Sputnik, 288 would be the way to go for 4 cross (if memory serves).

  • go 3 cross

  • Why 3 cross?

Cheapo ACS 48h hub and a 700c sputnik yeah.

  • with 4 cross, if you brake a spoke you could have problem replacement it

Based on your calculations, I'd go for the 286mm (I always round down).

  • Why 3 cross?

The correct question is: why not 3 cross?

  • Because as far as I'm aware 4 cross will give a stronger wheel with less ball-sized gaps? Am I wrong or is 4 cross just overkill?

4 cross is overkill and, as Rik pointed out, a pain when replacing spokes.

  • 3x gives the best balance between radial and lateral strength. 2x gives more radial strength, 4x more lateral. 4x also means more weight (marginal), and as rik said, a pain to replace spokes.

Wheel covers look cool and distribute impact across multiple spokes.

  • I'm guessing younger brother of Oz, right?
    Oh dear.

Broken spoke on my rear last night. I thought this wasn't supposed to happen on 26ers. le sigh.

    Oh dear.

    Oz is youngest of 4.
    I'm the 3rd.

  • But he upstages you at polo every time.... #justsaying

We haven't played against each other for a year. Have you stopped crashing into walls?

    Oh dear.

What've I ever done to offend you? Apart from pointing out stuff that you don't know that is.

Anyway, I've got a Halo SAS 48h rim on the way. Overkill for the front imo but at least it'll be better that the current wheel I have (galv spokes!). I could go for radial lacing for the bling but then it's going to be covered by a wheel cover anyway.

  • Dont worry, I am sure we will meet in Bristol. Still do but scoring sweet goals in the process :)

  • Just ordered some rims (26" 32h Rhyno Lite XL's) but am gonna need help getting spokes and building the wheels up.

Any advice on a decent spoke calc to help me get the right ones?

I built up my wheels 1 cross today, not totally convinced that the coverage is that great. From the side it looks good but the gaps are very tall and thin. So not ball shaped gaps but a fast ball could probably squeeze through whilst severely stressing a few spokes on the way.

  • Cheers snoops

Can't find the make of the front hub so I'm gonna try and measure it.
