  • I mean, what did you do when you used the ol' paper book?

I'm going to guess that he went to the library Ed.

  • jv before you give up on the Kindle can I point you to www.instapaper.com - It's basically a 'read it later' service for the web. I have mentioned it before on this thread. So for example you see a nice big article, post or book online but can't read it just then. You just clip it to instapaper, allowing you to come back to it later. It supports the Kindle by emailing a digest of all your day's clipping to your Kindle. (You can also do a single post, that entirely up to you.) I have instapaper'ed The Alchemist as an example here is the link : The Alchemist

You can have a Kindle and basically not buy any ebooks from Amazon if you so desire, just used Calibre and Instapaper and you should be fine.

thats awesome thanks fasih! can i ask what you mean by emailing stuff to your kindle?

I'm waiting for a second hand ebook store to open up near me before I commit.

Amazon give you two email addresses which are linked to your account and all your kindle devices. e.g. username@kindle.com and username@free.kindle.com.

You can send an email with a document attached and Amazon will convert it to Kindle format and send it to your Kindle. The difference between the two email accounts is that username@kindle.com works for 3G Kindles anywhere in the world, though there are conversion charges in places etc. Where as the username@free.kindle.com is there if you want to ensure you don't get charged for delivery.

  • Is the lending of kindle books available for the UK yet? It think it would be quite good to set up some kind of book sharing on here.

Also I'd recommend 'You've Gone Too Far This Time' brilliant book about cycling from England to India and only 69p at the moment.

  • Was looking at that but not sure whether to get it, cheer.

  • Don't suppose anyone has Sniper one the blistering true story as a kindle format they could send me?

Trims the negative space on PDFs to make them fit kindles better. Awesome for those who read a lot of journal articles.

  • can you load your own books, ie: not purchased onto the kindle?

  • Yes you are best off using something like calibre to manage your non Amazon purchases. You can also make it send you kindle friendly newspapers every morning.
