  • will the start up cd that you get with a new mac work on the old one?

i dont know what im doing really, going to have a nap. :/

  • I would check. The disk tends to only have one license attachéd to it and that is for the machine it came with. You may need to buy snow leopard but its only £26 and should (?!?!) give you a working computer so is probably worth it....

I'd be careful here! If you don't really know what you are doing you could make a real mess of things and lose some important files...

Onyx and Cleanmymac are good for freeing up space, I bet you have 6 gigs of temp files!

A cheap external HD for photos/videos/pictures could be used to free up space too...

Feel free to add me on skype and I can talk(type) you through anything... my skype is my forum name.

  • reinstall with snow leopard

Snow Leopard will run slower than Leopard on 4 year+ C2D machines (not much in it though so go for whatever suits your apps/workflow).

You only need 15% free HD space (in theory), once you go under that threshold on a Mac your computer will struggle to reallocate FAT on the HD and read/write will slow up (you'll also get lag from bad/unsorted data, akin to disk fragmentation on a PC).

Why not pull the old HD out (that's your backup done, hassle free) and stick a new SSD in there with a brand new OS install, if you then put your old HD in an enclosure you can use Migration Assistant to pull some data back for your new install to work as before, simples.

Bit much for someone who doesn't sound too confident with tampering with computers...
I actually have a spare 120 internal HD you can have for a beer if you can find someone to fit it...

  • Swapping HDs in the old MBs is real easy, easier than fitting RAM by far, but take your time, look at a guide and do both (gently/carefully).

Migration Assistant is designed for ease and putting an HD in an enclosure isn't difficult (take the HD to Maplins or similar and ask for guidance if needed).

  • Dear Mac Heads

What should I be paying for the following?

iMac 20" core 2 duo 2.0Ghz 1Gb RAM 250Gb HDD MA876B/A - ex repair unit. 6 months full refund warranty

    thx

  • I think £4-500ish. Still a really good machine but the brand new one for £999 is so much better that paying anything more would be silly.

Actually £400 going by a quick look on the internetz

  • yeah I offered £325 - silent auction

  • I got an iMac Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz 17" with 2GB of RAM, 160GB I'll sell for £200.

it got a new screen because it was a defect (those defect that Apple don't says a thing about it and get it repaired for 'free').

  • Has anyone used Virtual Box for running a VM on their MAC. I need to have Windows and Mac running in Parallel, hence not the boot camp route.

If any one has any other recommended open source VM software that they use let me know!

  • cheers for the offer Ed - I didn't put bid in in the end - can't justify the cost for a 5 year old chipset ;)

  • I think I'll sell it for £150, the DVD isn't functioning that well as far as I remember, but will throw in the external DVD-RW with it, will double check tonight.

Half Life 2 run pretty well on it.

  • ed how big is the screen? my parents could do with something like that

  • 17" 1440x900 (I think), I think it got Leopard.

  • i'll have a word and get back to you if they're interested

I've used it. It's okay, USB support is not great, and I probably wouldn't count on great (or any) 3D acceleration, or any "unity" features, but it gets the job done. I mostly use it to run a linux vm I just ssh to, but have used it successfully for Windows XP.

If you just need it short term, I'm sure VMware Fusion has a trial.

  • My track pad has broken (think I might have er accidentally spilled soya milk in it). Well it scrolls but doesn't click any more.

Can they be repaired? Don't fancy opening it up myself to try to fix it.

I might need it to run Tableau, which doesn't have Mac Support, and never will from what they say.

Cheers for the info, I think I'll give it a crack if this software is un-missable.

  • I upgraded to leopard, and my internet over ethernet is slow as fuck. Apparently the router thinks it's under attack (according to some threads on apple support) as leopard is much more aggressive in it's 'chatter' to the internet.

Who fucking knows. I'm not clever enough to fix this shit.

  • Bye Steve.

Ive had mine replaced through Apple Store, will try and remember to find the cost tonight
