Any advice for a total Mac noob (excepting the ipad & phone) on a budget who needs a Mac to run music editing software for a new self-employed job? I'm even indecisive about whether I need a iMac or MacBook.... I need something though. Sorry for the vague question but other than new (out of my budget) I don't know where to start. Cheers.

what software is it? do you need a newish machine or is a few years old ok? if even g5 is ok I can get you a mac pro for cheap, we have loads of them at work just standing around
otherwise, unless you already have a decent monitor i'd get a macbook pro
(and i certainly wouldn't go down the build-yourself-a-pc-but-run-osx-on-it, especially not if you're making music)

Why not?

a) if he's clueless about macs, building your own pc-version of a mac with zero customer support is perhaps not the best option
b) it's for a job, and more so audio, so needs to work 100%. I'd want a proven solution not the cheapest one

dooks, why not just pop to an apple store and ask them? They also have people who work there now who deal solely with customers using macs for business purposes.

Anyone know if Apple Stores replace warped batteries?
took my 4 year old hugely out of applecare and any kind of warranty macbook to the ncl apple store with an expanded battery and they replaced it then and there for free

thanks for the advice kboy. "job" might be glorifying it a bit. basically i'm trying to become self sufficient in producing music i licence to tv rather than relying on others to record me. i'm starting with tracktion 3 and logic. i'm confident i'll be competent on both pretty quickly as i'm familiar with backseat driving various DAWs over the years. it's just a case of learning the how to set up projects and all the keyboard short cuts etc.
i've been meaning to do this for years and have used not having (or being able to afford) a mac as an excuse not to bother. finally convinced the missus i "need" to spend the cash on a new mac to get this cottage industry up and running. decision made, and while i'm saving my pennies, i decided to invest on some hardware and start learning the software on my decrepit laptop. however, the usb audio interface i've bought won't play ball with my flagging pc. the urgency is no greater than before i guess, but having glimpsed the possibilities of how simple it is to make music this way i'm double keen to get some kind of working mac setup running so i can get on with it!
you're right in that a new mac book pro is the plan, but i've got a wedding to pay for in march so i can't be spending a grand till after then.
you're also right, i am wary of going down the home-build route as i'm pretty much i'm IT-phobic. i don't have a monitor at the moment but i'm sure i could rustle one up if a suitable and affordable tower was in the offing. thanks again for the advice and very kind offer. how much are we talking for one of yr redundant pros?

need to check specs etc but iirc we sold one for 200ish a while ago, i'll try and check specs on monday and pm you

Why not?
because the time spent building/flashing video cards/firmware/getting the wireless to work etc is best spent earning money with a decent machine. if you can't earn enough money to make up the difference between a hackintosh and a mac then change career.

My advice would be, think carefully about whether you value performance more than carrying it around with you. The iMac for 999 (21.5") is a very powerful machine, when you compare it to the similarly priced macbook pro.

But at the same time, the 3rd generation macbook airs are also very good value for money, and in my view pretty much replaces the macbook pro for everyone except those who need big screens, or high end performance.

Good to hear, my macbook pro is just a bit older than that and slowly falling apart, hopefully a replacement battery will keep it ticking until I can afford a new one.

Yup, I'm selling my mac to get the 11" 4gb version. When I'm at home I'll just hook it up to my monitor. Makes sense. And it's about time I offers my clients tethered shooting.

^ you think the macbook air is enough for big RAW files? I'm looking to get a new laptop and was going for MBP 13, though the portability of the air would be very nice
-

The macbook airs are more than powerful enough for raw processing i reckon. The spec is pretty damn good but the lack of FW800 and tiny internal hard drive could be pretty annoying seeing as thunderbolt drives seem to be a myth!
Hi this might be a dim question, but: Has anyone tried to run pre-jaguar [10.1.4] on a second generation g4 xserve? [wants to run classic for some reasons] thanks
