yeah.... what happened...
it all turned performanceyI unashamedly said earlier that I love stupidly large american 4x4s....
and someone wanted a caddy.
And I love the rat-look.and the golf is on its last legs, though it is bravely continuing on like a trooper.

The managing agents of our block of flats are scrapping an untaxed but unrusty Triumph Spitfire Mk IV tomorrow at 3pm, it's white and looks to be in (superficially) good condition.
If anyone wants it I can put them in touch with the managing agents, beyond that I have no idea of what the legal implications would be.
I have no time or space for this, or it would be my project.

snigger
-
• #6833
is it that one that has been there since you sorted the radio in the golf?
-
• #6834
It might be rotten underneath, but the bodywork is great.
And Henry- yep.
-
• #6835
if they have legal rights to scrap it- you can apply for a v5 using a v62.
then its yours.I think?
-
• #6836
Well, its there if anyone wants it.
-
• #6837
i drove a couple of them and didn't like them.

i really like this. good work. i'd love a new sbc in the mg. i quite fancy building my own motor though. i think i might buy a knackered rover v8 and have a little project.
seriously why bother, with the cost of LSx engines, ease of availability of parts and hp potential?!?
friend is making a coffee table out of a rover v8 block, best idea to do with that engine.
-
• #6839
So... lets say I buy a car and want to swap an engine- how do you tell compatibility?
-
• #6840
first of all - tape measure

So what cars in the UK came with/come with the LSX?
I think what you are saying is true of Oz and the states, here in the UK not so much.
There is a big tuning and parts scene in the UK for the old Buick V8 that went in the MG/Range Rover as it's the most commonly available V8 we ever got.

yeah, pretty much figured that out.
I meant like transmission etc... Is there a database I can search.I was thinking for the massive orange thing, if I buy, i'd want to put a more reliable lump in than it currently has. The 6.2 D apparently is a bit of an arse at times...
Thinking- put in a nice Landy engine (have a mate who's just built his own defender- incl chassis swap- so thought he might be able to help)
(reduce engine size, increase economy, increase towing ability- the last bit is important). -
• #6843
Learn by doing...
i suppose the counter argument is originality, and why not just by a land rover...
but thats not how my brain works. -

that's not true (here, anyway).
new ls1 - £4k (at least) + £2k box, and there's still ancilliaries to go.
+the 10 grand worth of chassis/brake/suspension/body mods
(and it's still an mgb)
a rover v8 will go straight into mine. there will need to be brake and suspension mods, obv. i see the appeal of a 400bhp motor that starts every time and will do 100k miles, but i am not interested in spending 20k to get it. a 200bhp rover with the ness brake and suspension mods will be plenty.

Shortening driveshafts isn't too difficult, probably best to get an engineering firm to do it if you're going to do a lot of miles in it though.
I've seen Landy drivetrains under SJ's. A lot of extra width there

disagree. after reading lots of conversion in uk and europe, people have no trouble sourcing engines/parts. 2nd hand engine and box from states/canada 2-3k, inc ancillaries, loom etc.
engine is as light as rover v8 and similar size. you would do exactly the same chassis work as that, only tunnel would need a bit of massaging with hammer.
several LSx tuners in uk, you'd be surprised. if not mail-order tune from aus/us..

There is a guy using a corvettte transaxle in his Volvo 340, behind a turbo 5, he ordered from the states, so yes of course it is doable.
But, it's still much much cheaper to buy an MOT failure for £100, rip the engine and trans out, then scrap the shell.
So yes, it's easy enough to get an LS7 if you really wanted- but it's a couple of orders of magnitude more expensive than buying a rotten SD1 that's been in a field for ~15 years, pulling out the oily bits and crushing the rest.
-
• #6848
yep.
i think that it a truckload more cash for a truckload more bhp that i don't think is necessary (imo, of course).
-
• #6849
300 NA horsepower in your MGB would be a laugh riot- and terrifying.
That's within the realms of a highly tuned Dura-tec inline 4, and that'd be light to boot.
Expensive power though, how about a modest turbo-4?
Do they do low comp pistons for your block?

In fact, if we are benchracing here, how about an LPT 20B?
Lightest of light weight engines, 300 bhp/300lb of torque.
Rip the engine and trans out of an RX-7.
Dale could crate it and post it.
you haven't seen the mg, have you? :)
i know, but that wasn't the point. we were talking about cars that have sat idle for long periods.
