  • Hither Green, SE13. Very quiet and "boring" - yet we live 5 mins walk from the overground which is 10 mins to London Bridge, 20 mins to Charing Cross. 15 min walk to Blackheath, 25 to Greenwich. 10 mins walk to Lewisham for emergency shopping (it ain't that bad really) and DLR. Also Lewisham overground. Loads of buses. Really well connected!

Used to live in Crouch End. Lovely place but wow, what a pain in the arse to get anywhere. Over an hour to get into town sometimes (on public transport)! Bus to Finsbury Park or Archway tube, that took 15-20 mins sometimes! You could be in town on a bike by then!

    Shared ownership: would you?

I hear bad things - I hear good things. Need advice from people who know it first hand.

  • Stoke Newington. If anyone knows of a nice period building, 2 bedroom, preferably Georgian, going, let me know.

Shared ownership between you and a housing association, or shared ownership with you and a friend (or friends)?

  • the housing association route, seems quite scammy

  • housing association.

    this stuff for example:
    http://www.firststepslondon.org/property-search.asp

    why would it be scammy?

  • maybe not scammy but someone told me it was'nt worth the hassle for those schemes where you only own 25%

  • Looked at this a couple years ago and was warned off of most of the offerings by my IFA, it also seems that the choice of properties is now limited exclusively to new builds.

If you are considering it, then some research in the resell value of such new builds would probably be worth while.

  • i did it . the flat is nice but the mix of people is the bit i don't like. anyway, we got a 2 bed off the kingsland road that is cheaper than renting a one bedroom flat in a similar location

  • Please, do tell. I've been looking a similar proposition nearby where I live at the moment and it's one of the concerns that I have. Not the biggest fan of apartment blocks anyway.

  • Bump/steal on this.

Looking at getting a 3bed property. Budget around 250k(ish).

Where would you go, want somewhere central as possible, up and coming with good connections on the tube near. Thinking east, mile end/bethnal green/shoreditch, maybe islington area(don't know much about it but where it is).
Any personal recommendations... Opinions on areas. What is islington like?

Any suggestion on good estate agents too look at?

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

    Etc. etc.

  • Really? By house i meant property, flat, apartments etc.

    Still a joke? Serious suggestions...

consider sharing a rented place usually ends up sideways I would never consider buying together with others part from a long term girlfriend. Imagine the shitstorm that can happen when you need to sell your bit - the buyer don't only need to like the place / location, also get on with your ex flatmates

or have i misunderstood the whole thing?

friends of mine bought a 1 bed in dalston for 350k 3 years ago. Now that was expensive, but it gives you an idea

3 bedroom anything for £250k in those locations isn't going to happen unless you don't mind some scrotty council flat with box rooms, low ceilings and a piss-stinking staircase to get to it.

  • PS. Islington is mostly v.v.nice.

Which is code for 'you can't afford it'.

  • i used glox brix from my internet searches good as it gives you links to estate agents pages and you can set your price range and wants in a quite a detailed way. good luck on your search.

  • South east - New Cross, Brockley, Honor Oak, Forest Hill type areas. You'll both have good access to where you need to work and should be able to find something in your price range in those areas.

    all of that^

  • Code cracked.

Okay, so maybe 250k is a bit low. But going upto 320-350k then. Where would get the most but still be central (ish) Thinking south, brixton, is going to be the best bet.

  • South east is cheapest.

  • PS. I also can't afford it.

Looking for 2 bedrooms for about the same budget at the moment, Forest Hill is in the mix, lovely area, some decent views if you're lucky, good train back into town.

2 bed flats in Islington go for £600K
