  • Apologies if it's already been discussed, I tried a search and nothing came up.

I'm starting to become alot more confident and "aggressive" when cycling.

I've started to use vehicles to lean on at lights so I don't need to unclip and can't track stand their duration.

I've also started using goods vehicles, vans, "utes" and some cars to hold onto for boosts up hills and at lights to gain speed fast.

I feel a bit cheeky doing it and I still feel a little underconfident doing it.

What do people think? Is it bad etiquette? Is it clever use of environment? Is it fracking dangerous?

I'm not saying I do it all the time, just when the opportunity arises. As a driver myself, I don't think I'd have a problem with a handsome guy on a shit hot fixie leaning on my car.....

  • Many drivers will try an kill you if they spot you touching their car.

  • yes, some wont like it, all that fucking health and safety neurotic fear... but you are the best one to judge it, and obviously if you do it, you must be confident and do it right otherwise its just plain silly show off

  • How could it possibly be a 'clever use of the environment'? It's dangerous and stupid.

  • yeah i would imagine you will get a few bad reactions from drivers if you are leaning on cars. mate of mine took a tumble when hitching a lift off the back of a flat bed truck. you cant judge how they are going to move and it pulled him off balance and he highsided himself.

confidence is a good thing on the roads, aggression not so much.

    Whats your reg number?

  • Seriously? You're just going to go round winding up motorists who will then take their frustration out on other cyclists, like me. And make our lives more difficult.

    Learn to trackstand.

  • ...and get the hate directed exclusively at fixed riders.

    ;-)

  • Whats your reg number?

    ^^ Any time.

  • ^^ miro repped

  • I declare yeesh an alias and collect my ten dorra.

  • Go ahead - do what you want to do. But don't be surprised if a car driver decides to beat the shit out of you, or a cyclist who can either trackstand or has the good sense to unclip calls you a dick for winding up the drivers to hate us all.

  • Had someone try to push me into a parked car when they saw I was skitching them - haven't done it since and don't plan to, isn't worth the risk. HTFU and get some leg muscles.

  • I declare yeesh an alias and collect my ten dorra.

    Of course.

    But who.......

    or is it "whom" ?

  • There's a pretty sweet example of it here: Which is where I got the idea from I think:

    @ 2 minutes 38.

Although I think it's harder on a fixed gear.

Seeing as I quite politely asked the question, I'm surprised at all the macho big man answers. But in hindsight it's probably de facto on this forum.

  • I used to skitch all the time, these days I attach a rope from the car to any fast looking cyclists so I can turn off the engine and save fuel, gets a bit hairy when they go for the narrow gaps though

  • Lean against my car and I'll throw your bike in the canal.

  • Lean against my car and I'll throw your bike in the canal.

What if you're nowhere near a canal?

    Unbefuckinglievable

    What do people think?

I think it's very, very silly

    Is it bad etiquette??

    Very.

Is it clever use of environment?

    No, no it's not

    Is it fracking dangerous?

    Very.

    Sexist

  • Speaking as someone who regularly drives a van and trailer around London and the south of england, Don't Fucking Do It. Simples. I have on several occasions seen fixie skidders and other cyclists attempt to ride in the space between the back the back of the truck and the front of the chipper(on the fucking left side as well to boot). This gap is only about 6ft long and has a wall of steel either end of it. The other thing is once you've seen someone hanging onto to the side of the truck you have no idea when they're going to let go, which means you cannot make and turns, slow down etc as the skitcher may not be able to see your lights depending on where they are.
It doesn't happen to me that often but I'd rather it never happened at all.

Not worth the aggro/getting sucked under a truck. HTFU and pedal.

  • Yeesh, you're an idiot.

  • Have you considered cycle training?

  • I've also started using goods vehicles, vans, "yoots" and some cars to hold onto for boosts up hills and at lights to gain speed fast.

definitely gonna come a cropper doing this bit.
