Tektro 520 or 720s are ok.
At the moment I have some free Frogglegs from a bloke who I think work for on-one.
They felt pretty spongy and crap, even thought I've put new cable, but then I was used to the Avid one which felt beautifully powerful.
I'm unsure whether the Tektro will be a lots better than the Frogglegs, of which were cheap.

Building this at the moment!
I once owned the frame but built it fixed. I then sold it back to the original owner, only to miss it terribly. Bought it back off him today, and this is its current state.
Desperately needs a new seat post, the one on there was just for the picture. Additionally I need to pump up the rear tub, and get some pads for the bars.
Also need to adjust saddle angle and stuff. -

thats mad. do you use it for time trials or?
-
• #46906
Well I'm not yet, but I would like to. Only just finished putting it together!
Will be getting it fitted before doing anything serious with it. -

Desperately needs the gear levers in the right place
Also, this FireEye chain tug/dérailleur hanger looks neater than your current setup.

^ Yes once I get the Pads I'll be moving the gear levers. Forgot to mention that.

I never liked my Frogglegs. I thought the build quality was so-so, pad quality was severely poor and the design quite dated. Tried some Tektro in the frogglegs style (standard on a Giant CX bike), and they were much better imo. The arms were cast instead of being two plates pressed on to brass, the bridge was much stronger, pad mounting easily adjusted. Also, everything was allenkey where the Frogglegs are still using hex nuts. With the Tektro the springs can be screw adjusted (as you do on a V-brake)

The hex nuts bother me sometime rotten, it look like a modern design yet somehow hex managed to find it's way onto a pair of brakes.
The Tektro it is then, ta, got some at my shop so I can able to get it at trade price.

I will also probably be removing the brake under the BB shell, forgot to take that out before pictures...
-
• #46912
twin brakes? is that standard practice?
-
• #46913
I will of course have both the DA brakes you see in the standard places, but not the third, under the BB shell. Not sure how it would have been run. 3 brakes? surely not. Probably just options? I'm sure Mdcc tester will enlighten us soon.
-
• #46914
well you can get cable splitter can't you? so one lever could control 2 brakes. never seen it applied like this though, more on tandems.
knowing me i'll be wrong like...
-
• #46915
It could be an additonal placement that the original owner decided to installed to improved his time trial result.
I'd removed the brake from the seatstay and go with the bb one, look much cooler.

Yes, it seems to have been built to cover all options. If it were mine, I'd keep the under-bracket brake and leave off the one on the seat stays. The back brake on a TT bike is mostly decorative anyway, so it doesn't really matter if it doesn't work quite as well as the conventional one, and you can make mocking comments to anybody who has laid out £4k on a Shiv, P4 or Speed Concept about their bikes copying features yours had 20 years ago.
Do you know what's under that tape on the wings? It's obviously a bit late in the day to expect to find the original elbow cups, but if there are pairs of tapped holes you should be able to adapt any modern kit, which will probably be more comfortable than the OE pads.

^ Thanks. not sure what I'll be doing about brakes yet, will give it some thought.
I don't know whats under the tape, but apparently the original owner 'took' them off, meaning there are indeed probably two holes under there. How would I go by adapting a modern kit?

• #46918
I can't really see how it might be an improvement. Campag use a single pivot caliper for the rear in their groupsets because you don't need that much braking power on the rear wheel before it locks up.

Crazy setup, Morgasm.

Ed, I have those Froggs Bollocks cantis and they're sharp as tack.
-
• #46921
I wouldn't be surprised as I read that if you set it up properly, replaced the cable, regrease it, etc. it'll perform perfectly fine.
Or perhaps I've gotten used to the Avid Ultimate Shorty that the Frogglegs felt very weak in comparison.

This arrived back from the enamelers on Friday. Going to give it a retro build with gears for L'eroica and then convert to fixed for next year

The brake itself has little effect on 'spongeyness', it's all about the setup.
-
• #46924
Really nice retro tt build but why have you put the bar end shifters there? Surely the point of having bar end shifters is so you can change gear whist on the extensions?
-
• #46925
^Indeed. As I said once I get some elbow cups I'll be putting them in the right place.
Ah the first time I read that I took it you built it up for her. If you did, her being too lazy to take some pics wouldn't be very promising for the amount she will be riding it ;)
