  • fuck! i hate this shit!

    =))

  • Chris King gripnut spec says stack height is "33-38" mm, what do they mean?

  • Chris King designed the first sealed bearing headset in 1976.

it means, that the top nut, doesn't need any thread so locks into the bottom nut.
    so threaded = 33mm
    with top nut = 38mm

  • Shimano's 6400 headset from the same era (600/Ultegra) should have a stack height of 33.5 mm.

Are you sure that you had everything installed properly (fork crown race slammed to the bottom etc.)? Is there exessive paint on some of the surfaces? This might be the case with a NOS frame.

  • facing the headtube of course is another option which i will eventually have to go through anyway

  • That's true. I had an Ultegra and it was low, and fncking nice.

    There is a 33mm 105 NOS here for £18.

  • You should probably just sell the frame, not worth the hassle...:P, could you not mix up a short stack shimano and your DA headset?

  • I say face the shit out of it.

  • i am looking at all options right now to be honest, because i happenned to sell the my other bike - need to ride!.. however facing is first on the list, secretly hoping it will solve it

I will say, go for it... it makes sense

  • You could use another fork for the time being, and have the steerer tube replaced.. Could that be done like halfway up the steerer tube so the paint isn't fucked?

  • some parts i just bought for my track bike project... sawn off MTB bars 680mm TO 460mm (to save money on getting new ones), token chrome track stem (25£) san marco ponza power saddle (19£ CRC) and driveline 48t cranks/bb from charlie the bike monger (£47.50£). great service from both sites. especially charlie the bike monger, being not a big commercial company.

  • ^ did you get the titanox rails?

  • Put another brake lever on the polo Bianchi, doesn't look nice but stops better now... Soon a dual lever, soon.

  • Won this Nigel Dean bike last night, hadn't heard much about NigelDean, but a 531 F&F with possibility of a few useable bits chucked in seemed like it should be worth £40....

Not 100% where to go with it until I get it, but originally I was going to convert to singlespeed, but thinking I might run it geared for a while first, unless the bits on there are no good. All looks like Exage 300, so not great kit but should do the job if still in working order.

Need to sort a wheelset out though or at the very least a front wheel (obviously!), just not sure what to go for. Don't want to spend mega money as want this to be a budget build to see how I get on with it.

  • thanks guys
by the end of today i will master all of shimano's headsets tech specs 80ies through 90ies

Chris King - maybe, but come on! this 1986 frame we're talking

    Gripnut is your friend.

Ok, you'd been there already ;D
Go for it Gleb, it's never a wrong choice.

  • cheers
already scheduled a visit to Krylatskiy velodrome workshop tomorrow afternoon, to face some Cr-Mo off, then we'll see

  • I had one CK installed on Friday and still had to ream the headtube, not because the cups wouldn't fit but they wouldn't sit perfectly straight. It took a good shaving.

    CK all the way.

Sanyi (Rich) form Brizzle uses this setup. He uses it to his advantage but then I don't have the coordination to do it so have made my own double lever

  • I've got a pair of small holes in my head-tube where the head-badge used to be. The frame is off to be powder coated and will then acquire a set of custom vinyl decals so I want the holes filled. Does anyone have any advice as to what to use/how?

This is the only picture I have, but from before the head-badge came off.

Oh, and out of interest what is the do-da oh the fork? I think I've seen frames with a light attached there, but is that the primary function? It's a mighty big braze on just in case someone might or might not want a light?

  • Why you don't keep the headbadge? It's lovely, or at least sell it on ebay, you'll fetch good money.
DIY (brass?), or take it to someone to do it: Mario Vaz, SuperTed, Roberts, Witcomb, etc, etc, etc...

  • So you can see the attachment? It doesn't show up on my screen, was about to post a flickr link.

Unfortunately the other side was missing it's rivet and was split :( otherwise I might have reattached it. I've got a load of stuff that will need selling at some point so might throw it in there for free if anybody wants it but I doubt they will.

Any recommendations about how to go about DIY brass filling? Need to keep costs to a minimum and don't know where I'd get it filled in Oxford.

Yes, it's a lamp boss. In the olden (Pre-LED) days, when a half hour commute needed 2 x D-cells in the lamp, you needed a sturdy bracket, and they still had to put Braille on the street signs for people who needed directions after dark.

The riveting is quite simple, Mario Vaz drilled and riveted a frame for me, I don't think he even charged me that...
Brass filling, it's not that straight forward unless you're a DIY man yourself.. Just get it done by a bikebuilder (or a welder).
