  • Awesome, thanks guys, chuck your names down.

    Oops, done already.

  • I can't make the qualifier (Saturday worker) and wouldn't be able to afford the jaunt to Barcelona at this late notice anyway. There were a few more 'interesteds' up here, but I think the drawn-out organisational debacle (at Barca's end) and unconfirmed wild-card put a bit of a downer on things and fucked up everyone's budgeting and holiday bookings.

Gutted, but looking forward to 2012. Good luck to whoever qualifies - interested to see which regional teams get through.

Much the same in Sheffield, plus it would seem that a fair few of our regulars simply aren't that interested in competitions.

  • Summary of the rules that are different to London's current "norm" (mostly to fall in line with NAH rules):

    • Axles must be chopped down.
    • Teams must wear matching colours.
    • Maximum mallet head is 180mm in length and 65mm in diameter.
    • The goal line must be marked (we need chalk).
    • No left-on-right jousting (right-on-right is the norm, unless both agree a left-on-left).
    • Time stops between goals/on the whistle.
    • No wrist shots.
    • Nearly all time-outs/balls out of play/foul calls require each team to return to their half and wait for the team that's awarded the ball to cross over (time then resumes).
    • No playing the ball with your feet.
    • If goals are moved, use the floor markings as reference for calling goals (or not), not the displaced goal.
    • Shoulders yes, elbows no.
    • No throwing rear wheels into bikes.
    • Hooks not hacks.
    • Checking along the boards is allowed (because of the fence at Newt, any reckless checks will result in a penalty... we should probably avoid checking overly aggressively because of the fencing?).
    • Thrown mallet = 30 second penalty.
    • Turnover the ball to the other team if you call a time-out (time-out punishment), unless it was a mechanical time-out due to an infraction caused by the other team.
    • Retreat to halfway if ball out of play, team that didn't hit it get possession in their half (deflections don't count). I've just relaised Alej's 10.5 and 11.5.2.2 conflict, so not sure about this.
  • Can we make sure there is a group of players to clean up after everything's done. There was a bit of mess last sunday morning left over from the full day of games on saturday.

Good point, I'll bring some extra rubbish bags.

  • [*]No left-on-right jousting (right-on-right is the norm, unless both agree a left-on-left).

    I don't like this rule.

I will try to get down, if I make it I will ref, sweep and clean up after. might only make it for the second half of the day though.

  • [*]No left-on-right jousting (right-on-right is the norm, unless both agree a left-on-left).

    I don't like this rule.

    .

    What? Are you crazy?

  • I know this rule, or talk about it, has been around for a while but I don't think London has ever played this one before:

8.2.2.1 - If the [foot-down] player stops a shot from going into the net, at the ref's discretion, it may be ruled a goal.

  • I think that's a very dangerous rule. It can work in other sports (a penalty try in rugby), but I do prefer the way football handles it, where they can get a penalty, and a player can get sent off for handball, but to get a goal it has to cross the line.

So to take that example back to polo, as we don't have the concept of a penalty shot, maybe a 30 second sin bin for the defensive player, and turnover to the attacking team, if they don't have possesion already, but I really don't like giving goals that haven't crossed.

    #my2p

  • Agreed, I'm gonna change our rules to reflect the "penalty given" rather than "goal awarded" approach. Alej's rules are down to him though (there's a thread on LOBP) and I think that came straight from the latest NAH rules.

  • [*]No left-on-right jousting (right-on-right is the norm, unless both agree a left-on-left).

    I don't like this rule.

    What? Are you crazy?

It's a sensible rule. Someone needs to tell Fen Boy Three about it before the tourney starts, tho'.

  • harvey on the charge! awesome.

  • Or maybe will can charge backwards, he's good at riding backwards.

  • Lefties can cross over their bars (I think) which Hayden can do no probs..?

  • but that would be a left vs. right charge. Not allowed.

  • In NA, they allow lefties to charge with the mallet on their right. But I guess it's not allowed if going by the letter of the rules?

  • I would not allow lefty vs righty charge, whether the lefty was crossing over or not. What if the righty decided to cross over at the last minute? Why should the lefty have to cross over and not the righty?

The rules are clear: no right on left charges, period.

  • Why should the lefty have to cross over and not the righty?

Because having your mallet on the right hand side is the "norm" and the "usual" way of charging for the ball. At least by crossing over you're allowing left handed players the opportunity to charge, I'd be happy crossing over for a charge and would also like this as an option of going up against someone like Hayden where they could keep their mallet on the left hand side. Discriminating against players is wrong, but asking players to pick a side for their mallet on a charge (which you must stick to and then peel off to the opposite side) is an effective way of avoiding big crashes on charges.

The only fair alternative is to have an alternative starting method for a game if one team is all right handed and one team is all left handed as currently an all leftie team now won't be able to charge, which isn't right.

I admit that all leftie teams don't really exist, but we're setting a precedent and I think the precedent (for our London rules at least) should be on mallet side/peel off direction, not left-handed or right-handed players.
