heres mine, new headset, stem, forks. Syncros seatpost to come.
Very nice. Get some bull horns on there and it'll look amazing. I'm going to have to have a spin!

I've decided to keep the orginal brakes so I've given them a good scrub and they've come up pretty nice! I've no idea how good the Shimano 600 brakes are, can anybody advise?
I'll replace any rusted nuts/bolts/washers etc later on.

^ think 600 is Ultegra spec.
-
• #42655
600 evolved into Ultegra, it was kind of the first midrange group. However, any single pivot brake of that era is going to leave something to be desired. Modern pads will help a bit.

yeah for sure, tried some I've got lying around on earlier, but gonna get some airwings/black bullhorns to match the rest of the front end.
Critical mass was pretty fun, quite a few people for first one.

Cheers guys. Any recommendations on a good mid range brake set-up but with a classic look??

well, just get a polished alu dual pivot brake will do.
the piece of metal loop on the back of the brake is the earliest form of a 'puncture protection'.
basically it brush off anything that might get embedded on the tyres and cause a puncture.

Modern pads will help a lot, and those guide are for killing squirrels.

Thanks again, much appreciated. I did wonder about the small triangular things and the metal loop at the back of the brake, but didn't want to ask in fear of getting flamed :)

My experience tells me that bare hands actually grip better to Benotto's tape.
mine does too, however they offer no padding whatsoever.

if your question is about why we need wheels on a bicycles, then yes you might get flamed.
perfectly justified question.

I've decided not to buy a new frame, I'm just going to slowly upgrade the (borrowed) Lemond and try and get the best fit possible.
If you wanted the most noticeable improvement would you upgrade the wheelset or groupset? Current wheels are CXP33's on 105 hubs and 105 f/r deraillers with Tiagra shifters. Got gear issues though, It might be just ancient cables or it could be because its old and wasn't great new. Ideally I would just do both but can't swing that at the minute..
Just want to get out on the road as soon as

Thinking about it, that came off really stupid. I'll just replace the cables and see whats up

wouldn't like to ride on the road with Benotto tape, but it looks so nice.
I've been riding around on my new Freddie Grubb this week. I didn't have anything else handy when I built it up, so I used red Benotto tape. It looks great, but it's not the comfiest. I've now got some Brooks tape ready and waiting for when my hands can no longer take it. I think I could do with some Paselas too - not for my hands though, just to make it look better.

Swapped out the RB201 bullhorns for some older Nitto bullhorns and wrapped them in yellow Benotto tape. Now I need to clean up my old yellow turbo to match!
Hard to find these Nitto bars? Looks really good.

Na, a buddy had them on his old bike and passed them on to me.
I haven't seen many like this though, nice shape to them.

Picked these up from the post office yesterday. Sent to my address by mistake (meant to send them to my parents, in UK), yet I avoided customs. Instant anti-porn. But look great up against the shouty looking 2009 BMC racemaster.
Nice CNC work.
Really getting there now.

Small triangular things below the brake pads are wheel guides / tyre guides.
Help you to put the wheel back in easily/quickly after a puncture / wheel change.
The tyre doesn't bump on to the brake blocks, but is guides between them.
Noo need for these, but they are handy and belong to the original spec.
Nowadays these guides are mostly integrated with the brake pads or brake pad holders. -

What size are those rings?

They make less ugly ones BTW

Who in their right mind would buy a £1000 carbon fibre aero wheel for general a to b city use?
I hate to say it but Ed is right: his thorn is ideally suited to the kind of riding he plans to do, and Pistanator you were rocking a high-end carbon track wheel on the road which is fucking daft!
