  • I'm on the phone to Amazon - they're refunding the cost of the cover and adding a promo code for £21 to my account to cover the cost of the lighted cover - does that sound right?

  • one thing i've heard from kindle owners that sounds annoying is that if u are reading a book that u nothing about u have no idea how long it is. this sounds like a minor annoyance

The recent update added page numbers.

Even before page numbers there was a little percentage bar at the bottom and Amazon's own method of pagination (some number out of some other number).

Spot on, and if you are a little less than scrupulous you could sell the old case in eBay, amazon aren't publicising this is the reason for the withdrawal from sale, so there is a pretty buoyant Market for them.

  • Yep - got it delivered - it's not as good quality as the non-lighted case IMHO

  • the percentage bar was less than useless. ie i've read 20% of a book i dont know how long is

with the page numbers does it tell you how long in total the book is?

  • I thought that ^ apparently you have to press Menu to see the page numbers? Pointless

  • I don't get the problem. The only thing I need pagination for is referencing. If I'm reading something that I won't be referencing, the bar is fine to figure out how far into a book you are. If you wanted to, you could work out a rough estimate of how many "pages" are left by seeing how many page-flips it takes to move up 1%.

In any case, page numbers are better. Not all ebooks have them yet, though.

  • its just a minor niggle. i pick up a fat book in a library i know its long. i download an ebook i dont

  • There does seem to be a way of measuring the relative size of your books. When you're in the menu looking at what you've got, underneath each book is a bar of a different length which also shows how far into it you are.

This is what I've always assumed it meant, anyway.

But yeah, I get what you mean. In the end, though, it's worth it.

  • if you change the size of text on an ebook reader the number of pages would change though surely? it's not quite the reliable metric it was in print.

  • I hide all my money inside books.

trouble is I can't read. so I don't own any books.

    I guess it's lucky I'm skint really.

They're linked to a hard copy, not what you're reading. You may have two pages on one page, or may have to flip through three e-pages before getting to the next hard copy page.

  • ^that sounds more confusing than not having any at all.

thanks. yes agree definitley worth it, i am just geeking out til i get one in june

It's there for referencing (essential if you want to read academic texts on a kindle) and being able to discuss texts with people who have hard copies (book clubs).

  • the percentage bar was less than useless. ie i've read 20% of a book i dont know how long is

Well, it's 5 times as long as the bit you've read so far...

  • Has anybody tried the screensaver hack? I'd like to add my own images as I am fed up of the standard ones.
Really don't want to create a brick though.

    Are you trolling?

In all versions, on the home page of the Kindle where it lists the books... the length of the line of dots below the title is relative to the length of the book.

They act as great indicators, because you know roughly how long a book is instantly, without doing anything.

Once in a book, do you need to check again? You already know whether it's a short, medium or long read... I'd rather than reduce the interface so that nothing but the text I'm reading is on that screen, which is what happens.

I just don't see the problem, and there has always been a method for seeing how big a book is before you read it.

  • I recently downoloaded the Completre Works of Turgenev because I wanted to reread Fathers and Sons. F&S was the first book in the compilation but even at the end it was only showing around 5% on the scale at the bottom. This did not, however, bother me.

  • not trolling. what cliveo said, i dont even have one yet....

  • So your question is: If you downloaded the Complete Works of Shakespeare, being a 10,000 page (for sake of argument) compendium... and you want to know how long Romeo & Juliet was, that you wouldn't be able to tell from the guide on the front of the Kindle?

Sure, that's reasonable... it's exactly like seeing the big book on the shelf and not knowing how long Romeo & Juliet was from looking at that.

But... once you went into the book, the progress bar at the bottom would show chapter boundaries, which in the case of a compendium indicates book boundaries.

So... yet again, you have a meaningful indicator about the length of the book.

  • Don't make him angry.
You won't like him when he's angry...

About to buy a Kindle for Tori, who has been converted by one handed reading, whilst breast feeding. This will now be the fourth Kindle in the family (me, T, Granny, Grandad) all bought through the affiliate link up there.

    I (L) Kindle.

Now I need to figure out the best way of Tori and me sharing books. Hmmm, multiple accounts on multiple Kindles, anyone?

  • Same account on multiple kindles?

  • pretty much, and I think you can 'share' books too.
