  • new project is a Ragley TD-1 ti 29er mtb. built up with carbon rigid forks and probably single speed. frame is awaiting collection from shop. cant wait. will post pics when i have it in my possession.

  • ^again this is what I had feared.

    Some pro's run without a top cap on the headset and the stem sits on the compression ring to get a lower position .. this approach would give you a few more mm's probably if the headset you've got is designed with a compression ring .. but I'm not sure how long your headset will last but I guess if your a pro it don't matter

  • Of course they're ok pre-sale. They want your money.

    So many times people have ordered stuff that they say they have in stock, 2 months later they finally get a response telling them that they didn't have that in stock and they'll let them know when it is. Refund? No chance, just wait until it comes into stock.

    ^^^^THIS

    used wintstanleys once, got burned with weeks and weeks of waiting for what was supposed to be in stock to finally turn up, gave them another chance, and lo & behold same shit. When you ring them they literally laugh "well what do you expect" was one comment, walk off with the phone on the table and never come back or just hang up.

    Only 'bike' shop that are worse is Dave Hinde's, apparently they used to do good wheel & frame building donkies back, but ever since i've been into bikes (1999>) they have been the butt of all bike jokes and with good reason. Do not want. ever.

  • Went for my first ride on the kotter after painting and rebuild(on the left).
    Still not finished - needs a few new thing on it first.

    If any retailer EVER takes this attitude with you, simply immediately contact your debit/credit card provider, explain that the retailer has taken your money, failed to supply the goods and is now refusing to cooperate in a reasonable manner.
    they will reverse the transaction for you, without fuss.

    paypal are very good for this too.

    there's no need to let people get away with this kind of behaviour

  • companies like that thrieve off first time customers directed to them from sweet sounding deals in magazines and the web, they don't give a toss for returning customers and likely, never will.

    Its not just like this has happened to a few people, practically everyone I know/have heard of using winstanleys & hindes has had problems in one way or another.
    I think their strap line on the top of their website should be 'Buyer Beware'

  • the old man bike is getting there.

    for lejog hopefully I'll be able to get away with the carradice and a boxy randonneur front bag (with a little rackage) as we are not camping. Something like:

    http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/bags-panniers-and-baskets/ostrich-handlebar-bag-new-style.html

    anyone know of a similar bag in black apart from the velo orange one? I really wish carradice made this kind of bag as it would be great to have a matching pair (and because carradice are really good).

    I think I'm going to get more of an upright stem, to give me a bit more comfy position for the long days in the saddle, but that aside I pretty happy.

  • t-4003.

    I have that exact bag, loved it.

    The forward facing flap is useful while on the move as the wind doesn't push the flap back in it's place if it were the other way round.

    The pocket on the back (the two pocket between the stem/headtube) is useful for keeping stuff like your mp3 player, small snack and the like, what you need left is a decaleurs to keep the bag stable on the front.

    Fuck me, that's all over the shop?! :-(

  • Need some advice on getting a cantis brakeset for the Brooklyn Gangsta.

    Avid Shorty Ultimate - yay or nay?;

    http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/avid-shorty-ult-zoom.jpg

  • They are the best cantilever brake out there in my opinion.

    Have you considered v-brakes though, assuming you're not needing to worry about mud?

  • Good to know.

    I'm riding with road levers rather than V-brake levers (running SRAM brake levers), also I get those at trade price making them an even better value for money.

    I'm heading to the SSWC in Ireland, which may get muddy but overall it'll see the road more than off-road.

    The Gangsta is getting canti mount done soon, it doesn't look half bad with a cyclocross set-up (with the obviously poor choice of brake in picture);

  • Ed, which SRAM levers are you using?

  • S900;

    http://shop.2wheelsonly.co.uk/ekmps/shops/1strate/images/sram-s900-brake-lever-set-carbon-levers-for-drop-bars-6918-p.jpg

    If you're looking for something cheaper, have a look at the S500, same as S900 but without the carbon lever.

  • Tanks!

  • They are the best cantilever brake out there in my opinion.

    He speaks the truth, but have you considered TRP CX-9s? If you don't have to contend with mud these would be perfect. They supposedly work better with SRAM levers than Shimano.

  • Did not realise that there's cyclocross-specific v-brake out there (make sense though), I didn't went for v-brake originally due to the difference in cable pull (road = less etc.) with road lever*.

    Am I right in saying that the modulation of a cantis is better than a v-brake? the shorty seemed to tick all the boxes and I can able to set them up nicely, according to C+ review, the TRP is a bit spongy, but ultimately offer more power than the avid.

    *I realise that there are v-brake specific road levers out there, but I didn't find them comfortable.

  • Modulation is better but overall power is significantly less

  • I've got some CX-9s waiting to go onto my cross bike (which doubles up as my family bike in the summer), mainly because I can't get the baby seat on it with the Ultimates fitted but also because I wanted something with a bit more stopping power on the road.

    I'll probably race with them to begin with next season and only change them if they prove to be prone to mud clogging.

  • Have you already got ultimates?

  • Think I'll go for the cantis, while the v-brake offer more power, I'd like to have a better modulation with my brakes.

    Andy, somehow I imaging the equative of your bike being a people carrier on a touring car race.

  • Have you already got ultimates?

    Yes. Had disc brakes before but cable operated BB7s don't work with road shifters very well, despite the marketing blurb. I set up the bike with some EuroX cantis but they were fiddly beyond belief so picked up a pair of the ultimates after hearing nothing but praise for them. They are very good, ideal for cyclocross and very easy to get set up.

    • bit geeky to put it all out on the floor airfix style, but im really looking forward to building this up and getting out on it!

    ...anyone know where i can pick up a black rear derailleur cable housing?
