  • I'm considering buying a set of mavic cosmic pro wheels, but am a little insure if i can change the freehub body.

    It currently has a campy 8 speed cassette, and want to install a dura ace 8speed hyperglide cassette.
    Is it possible to just swap the free hub bodies? (the hub on the wheels is mavic)

    Do you know which year they are from? I can't find a tech manual for Cosmic Pro (I'm assuming you mean the old aluminium wheels), which either means Mavic are being slack or the wheel predates the internet. If it's from before 2000 or so, it definitely has the old style freehub, and you're going to struggle to find a spare Hyperglide body for them even though such a thing did exist at the time. If they are significantly later than that, they almost certainly use the FTS-L freehub body, which is Mavic's current and more or less universal design (some very low end Mavic wheels are different, but that doesn't apply here)

    For the Cosmic Carbon variants, apparently you can tell the old FTS freehubs from the later FTS-L ones by the axle lock nut on the drive side - if it's a hexagon, it should be FTS-L. If you're in luck with the basic design, FTS-L bodies are £29.99 from

    On an old wheelset like this, that could be a deal breaker - you might be better off waiting for a Shimano set to come up, since they are more common and won't carry the premium usually attached to Campag compatible wheels.

  • Oh, and if it is FTS-L, have a good feel of the freehub body before parting with money to make sure it spins freely but without play. Inadequate maintenance of FTS-L systems can allow the bush on the inside, which rotates directly on the hub shell, to get contaminated with abrasive crap, which wears away the hub shell when you freewheel. If this has happened, your rear wheel is essentially toast.

I guess this means the freehub body will be really hard to track down and as you say it's probably better to wait for a shimano equipped wheelset to turn up. All this talk recently in the current project thread about cost effective ways of going faster prompted the search for deep wheels. Thanks again

  • Can you not use campag cassettes with shimano setup? This is something I've been meaning to ask...

  • *Campagnolo's spline configuration is not the same as Shimano's, and. Campagnolo has repeatedly modified it.
    Many replacement parts are not available for older models. Most Campagnolo cassettes will work on Campagnolo hubs made for larger numbers of sprockets.
    *Cog spacing is different enough from Shimano's that Shimano derailers and shifters may not work well with Campagnolo cassettes, and vice versa.
    It is possible to fudge compatibility in some cases where cog-to-cog spacing is similar**.

  • I am building a rear wheel with DA HB-7100 on the front and HB-7600 on the rear laced to Mavic cxp33 rims. The wheels are kind of a temporary build to use on the road until I can affrord some new rims to build some wheels for the track.

    Now, they are 36 hole, which is one of the reasons I am building for temp road use rather than track. I will prob watch and wait for something else and possibly sell them off.

    Problem is that I can't get the right length spokes quickly in the length I need for 3x. I could get the right length for 2x today. Would this type of rim and hub be alright on the road, or even on a track with just 2x since it is 36 hole, high flange and the rims are 23mm deep?

  • That's what I wanted to read. Cheers mdcc_tester. Now annoyingly I just realised that I will still have 3x on the front, which will look a bit odd. Not the most important consideration, I admit, but it is good if things can have good function and form. I think I'll try to get the spokes for 2x on the front now too...

    It does all of the above and you can log miles done (or complete lack of in my case). You can also log rides to the site with GPS data from fancy Garmin devices apparently.

    I've just spent quite a while playing on it and while it's clearly still in development and has quite a few things that could do with improving, I like it (even though I don't have any GPS). I like that you can change easily from 'follow roads' to 'draw lines' within the same route. Route editing quite clunky though....

    It's just in the Classifieds threads and just for the OP.
    It indicates the forum rep for the person selling etc.

  • I'm looking for recommendations on two entirely separate things if anyone would care to share their opinions:

    Firstly I'm afraid my posterior has been rather spoilt by my brooks B17 of later and I'm find the saddle on my Leader very uncomfortable. Its a cheap Fizik copy. I'd like to replace it with something a tad would be more forgiving and would also not look out of place on my bike.
    I don't need it to be super light or anything.
    I know saddles are a very personal thing, but I rather feel like a peach on a razor blade of late, anyone got any suggestions?

    Secondly I need a new house phone, can anyone recommend one that meets the following critera:

    • Three hand sets
    • Base station with a built in answer phone
    • works with a Virgin line
    • able to deal with think brick walls
