This is getting stupid now HB...I was in the Albert tonight on a totally sparkless date!
you're spotting skills are appalling in that case, our group of cyclists took over the whole front bit of the pub just as you went inside the door and my highly distinctive pink bike covered in duct tape was locked up right outside the front door as well...

someone DAS'd me near St. Pauls today. I did a little hop skid because I was already going really slow.
I was on the white bike with tri bars.It was me, for some odd reason I was in a cheery mood so I started my work day with a friendly DAS

Because not enough effort has been made to express it in German. There's very rarely a compelling reason for loan words, especially today. Every time a pointless loan word is adopted, a language loses a potential word.
I'm sure there's a good way of expressing this idea in German.
Nah, it gains an actual one :-)
Cafe, restaurant, shadenfreude, doppelgenger, pasta, cummerbund, denim, chinos, brogue, pork, hotel, grape, abacus, alphabet, behemoth, apron, canister, avatar, hamburger, rucksack, abseil, ersatz, etc...
wouldn't you agree that the English language has been enhanced and enrichened beyond measure by these and other loan words, rather than weakened by them? The sheer variety of synonyms made possible by the adoption of words from all sorts of cultures is a big part of what makes English such a good language for poetry, song and prose. And that is what makes it such a widespread and successful language. The reluctance of the French to permit their language to grow organically and instead ban imported words in favour of "true" French alternatives is what, with the exception of the results of their imperial past, keeps it provincial and insular.
But as to a German word,
Kernerman suggests:skid
v skid [skid]
to slide accidentally sideways His back wheel skidded and he fell off his bike. rutschen
n
1 an accidental slide sideways. das Rutschen -

I have to admit I was a little nervous as I was walking in to meet her...vaguely remember a group of people but quickly disappeared to the back for some food...
I'm absolutely fine and uninjured but...
Had a transit turn off left from the middle lane (indicating after he had crossed my lane) and smacked into the side of him. I reacted bloody quickly so managed to scrub loads of speed off.
I'm totally fine if a little shaken. Bike is at LBW, they are going to try to true rear wheel (which got wedged under van).
Van driver immediately stopped, admitted his mistake, apologised, wouldn't let me ride off until I had assured him I was ok...he even gave me his details just in case I needed a repair and I wanted him to pay. Maybe I'm being suspicious but sounds like he has something to hide!
I'm pretty chuffed at how I reacted to the hazard but fuuuuuck. -

They were Top secret highly classified drinks.
@Stonehedge: good to hear you're ok dude. which junction was that? I'm going to hazard a guess and say the one along jamaica way where the bus lane turns into a straight ahead and a left turn lane and the car lane goes straight ahead?

Cheers chaps...I was shaken up but am feeling a fair bit better.
Glad I was riding geared rather than fixed today...I'm getting better but still not good enough at emergency stops really. I am only on gears today to double check set up before going out for a century tomorrow. Lucky.
And yes HB, got it in one!

JAMIE do you ride in a hat with headphones and were you Great eastern Street around 7pm last night? If not then that's some other guy in denim hotpants - there are more of you

• #34615
I'm sure other riders wear denim cutoffs but none as short as JAMIE's :)

I love the fact I knew I was talking to Jamie the first time I spotted him...

I wonder if the number of JAMIE spots would double if I commuted in denim shorts with a roll top bag next week?

Ah yes, you were telling me this but i wasn't quite with it. Good luck in the trial though!

it's not just about denim hoptpants and a massive rolltop bag Stonehenge. You need to practise whistling while riding comfortably at 45kmph

Why shudder? If one language doesn't have enough words it borrows from one that does.
Sse, when I forget a word in French, I have a tendency to substitute a German one. They don't seem to like it.

There's always a way to express it in German; all the complex words are constructed from combinations of simpler words. I've always thought this makes German a much more egalitarian language than English, because there's a chance for any reasonably intelligent German speaker to work out what any academic/philospher/whatever is talking about. Can't do that in English unless you have a classical education.

Ha ha...hands up, if I could ride a bike like JAMIE I'd be a very happy man. Tried to keep up with him last week and lost him within 100m.
I do whistle when I ride though...I just have to pause to wheeze in another lungful of air thats all!
