Updates on upcoming YFC classes and workshops at **Bodywise, De Ver Cycles and Triyoga **(that's East, South and North London covered, working on West London!) are thusly:

    Weekly class at Bodywise:

The next 7 week yfc course will be starting this Thursday 24th Feb ('til 7th April).

As usual, the class shall be taking place every Thursday at Bodywise yoga and natural health centre on 119 Roman rd E2 0QN. 8 – 9.15pm.

It works out cheaper if booked as a course (that is if you can make at least 6 of the classes) and even cheaper if you are a concession of any kind - student/ unemployed/ oap etc. If you have never done any yoga before I strongly encourage you to book a course. If you have yoga experience, you are welcome to drop in.

This class will of course benefit anyone who is engaged in other physical activities (climbers, runners etc.) or not - so welcome all.

There is bicycle parking available outside Bodywise. Bodywise encourages people not to bring bicycles inside as believe it or not, they are considered safer outside!

    Monthly workshop at Bodywise:

This will be taking place Saturday March 19th 2.30 - 5.30pm. 'Twill be themed and specific. More details on that soon. I have some ideas in mind, but if there's anything you'd like to propose, please feel free to do so! Some yoga experience preferable but not essential.

The next 7 week course will be beginning 7th March - every Monday 6.30-8pm. There is only room in the shop for a maximum of 8 students - therefore if you are interested, please contact Maurice or Mia sooner rather than later. As a result of low capacity, guaranteed places throughout the course can be ensured by paying for the course upfront (£60) or after the first class. For those who can commit to most of the course, 'twill be £10 drop in price. De Ver Cycles is located at:
    **632 - 634 Streatham High Road, London, UK SW16 3QL **

    FURTHER INFO:

This class specifically addresses a cyclist's typical physical tendencies as a result of the imbalance created by repeated overexertion of some muscle groups and underutilisation of others. The class will concentrate specifically on:

Increasing full mobility in the joints that suffer from reduced mobility during cycling, in particular the hips, shoulders and knees.

Strengthening postural muscles to encourage correct seated alignment and ease overuse of the upper body and back strain.

Lengthening the commonly overdeveloped quadriceps, hip flexors and tight hamstrings.

Counteracting postures to balance out the cyclists position when astride a bike (eg. backbends etc).

Controlled breathing for increased exertion, endurance and efficiency.

The main aim being that students learn how to strengthen and stretch mindfully in class and apply these at any point pre or post ride and keep commonly developed cycle related injuries at bay.

Rebecca has trained in various forms of Dance, Anatomy & Physiology and most recently Yoga Teacher Training with Edward Clark and Elizabeth Connolly. She has taught and continues to teach these subjects since 2002.

Having cycled regularly for 16 years, practiced yoga for 13 and taught anatomy & physiology for 5, it made sense whilst doing my yoga teacher training to bring all disciplines together. What started off as simply a written assignment, gradually developed into a programme specifically designed to help cyclists.
• In for De Ver!

  • Anyone recommend a good yoga book for a beginner, relevant for cycling. I'm on west coast of Scotland so don't have access to courses etc.

  • Hey all,

Just wanted to let you all know that I'm going to start a yoga for cyclists class at my place in Sydenham, SE 26. Some of you will know me as a wheel builder but I've been teaching yoga since '93 and now that my yoga room is ready I want to start using it. It's a normal sized sitting room and can take up to five people comfortably, six at a squeeze which would be seven including myself.

I'm going to run a couple of taster sessions on Tuesday 5th April and Tuesday 12th April. From 7.00 - 8.00pm. This will be on a donation basis, sort of Radiohead download style. I would like to have at least three people to run the class. If there is a lot of demand then I might do second class from 8.00 - 9.00pm. I think that people wouldn't be able to make a 6.00pm one, but if you can make that one then I'll run one then.

This will be for beginners and people with very little experience and focused on postures to target muscle groups that become stiff or tight through cycling. Being a small group means that I can give more individual attention. I tend to deliver my classes so that what I call the pseudo-esoteric part is stripped out as well as any cultural elements. I focus on postures, breathing and anatomy per se and leave out any chanting or Hindu philosophy. So it's Eastern yoga but in a Western context.

The taster sessions will give you a chance to see if you like my style of teaching and if it benefits you. I'm trained mainly in the Iyengar system but have also studied Shandor, Scaravelli and Astanga. So there will be influences from those styles too. After Easter I'm going to run a ten week course which should give you a foundation in all the basic principles and I also plan on helping you to develop your own routine depending on what you need.

You can find address details on my wheel building site - http://yogarup.com/wheels/contact

Get in touch using the contact form on the wheel site, write a post here, PM me or send a text. Just so I have an idea of numbers and whether to run a second class.

    Cheers,

    Arup

  • I should also mention that I have a cat who might wander in from time to time. One or two people had to pull out due to cat allergies.

  • bet the cat can show a good bidalasana though

  • He's ok but not as good as my old cat.

  • Went to the De Ver class on Monday. It was fantastic, really enjoyed it and loving Rebecca's class.
Bit of a man / bike shop pong however which is not what you want with deep breathing...

    Looking forward to next week!

  • its time to get outside and practice your hand stand variations again,
one long massive end of winter sigh

  • News from Rebecca:

    Greetings cyclists, yogi's and friends,

No doubt you're all putting the miles in making the most of the warmth and sunshine!

    YFC at Bodywise, Bethnal Green

Firstly, just a reminder that the new 7 week course at Bodywise will be beginning this **Thursday April 14th **at Bodywise (www.bodywisehealth.org) 8 - 9.15pm. If you are a complete beginner, I would recommend booking the whole course, If you have yoga experience, then feel free to attend on a drop-in basis.

This course was due to finish 26th May, however it will now be ending 9th June. This is due to recent news that I am due to have minor surgery on the 12th May. Nothing serious but it does involve stitches and I've been asked to give stretchy yogic action a break for a couple of weeks! So, the first four weeks will run from April 14th - 5th May. There will then be no class on May 12th and 19th. The last three weeks will run from 26th May - 9th June. Apologies, I know this is far from ideal, but 'tis surgery I cannot postpone...

    YFC at Sukasport in Soho!

Secondly, YFC in Soho has been confirmed! Thank you to all of you who respnded with your preferences - looks like Wednesday 7 - 8.30pm works out best for most of you. The class will be starting 20th April. It will eventually also follow course format, but we will initially offer 4 taster sessions between 20th April - 11th May. Each class will probably follow a different theme. More info on this to come soon as well as class prices. Again, due to surgery, I won't be teaching Wed 18th May, but will return on the 25th when we will probably begin to teach in 7 week course format.

The class will take place at Sukasport (www.sukasport.com) - a new independent specialist gentleman's sports boutique - 47 Beak St, W1F 9SE. If you'd like to have a peak at the space, they will be having a launch event all day 'til 10pm this Thursday which you would be more than welcome to attend. I'll be there between 5.30pm - 7pm methinks.

    Maybe see you then!

Please forward onto anyone you think may be interested...
