worry not, hippy doesn't like samsung as they dont provide quick updates...
Samsung galaxy s is due to get 2.3.2 in March officially through samsung... which oddly enough is quicker than htc... maybe they have realised that they are about 1 year ahead of htc in hardware and need to match it with software too...
needless to say im quite surprised... however 2.3 is a non story really... nothing has changed really...
"Due to get" != has. I'll believe it when I see it.
Desire, Desire HD and Desire Z are due to get 2.3. Can you say the same about the old Galaxy? No. Abandoned. Also the Galaxy S is meant to be their flagship, Google phone and yet most people prefer the Nexus One. Poor build quality, poor performance
1 year ahead in hardware? Your crack pipe is empty. Desire HD smokes the Galaxy S in pretty much everything.

Install Android 2.3.3 On the HTC Desire
Did this, now I have a much faster, smoother system with a longer battery life. Make sure to root your phone first though.

Swype... It's awesome...
For pissed/walking around typing it's a boon

I tried WordsWithFriends last night and uninstalled it after about two minutes. It's slow, clunky, seemingly bloated, noisy (!) and missing basic functions I'd expect in a Scrabble app.
Wordfeud FTW.

Swype is sooo good, but it won't stay working on my Desire. It stops working after a reboot and I have to reinstall it. Fucking annoying.

Got upgraded to gingerbread overnight on my nexus 1. UI's gone all dark. And has a CRT style "off" effect when you turn the display off.
Seems to have fixed a lot of the bugs from the last hotfix that was causing google maps (amongst other things) to crash constantly.
-
• #4234
yeah, Swype seems to stop working every time google push out an OS update. I guess they have to adjust some thing(s) manually each time in the code? Seems pretty crap. Still, it's beta, so what do you expect.

[less of a Luddite] found the thing to link HTC DHD pics into flickr... This new fangled gadget is proving to be very useful

hmmm still no gingerbread on my nexus 1...

I think I may install gingerbread onto my Desire today. What's the best way to root right now? Unrevoked?

Nm, Unrevoked is sooo easy. Now time to give gingerbread a go.

My crack pipe is never empty.
DHD was released almost a year after the galaxy s so its a second gen chip runnin gthe handset whereas sgs was the first gen of its kind.. Also i dont believe much of the benchmark nonsense, i have handled both handsets, housemates dhd, whilst feels amazing in the hand has an aweful amount of jerk and poor response on the screen...
Ill give you that the galaxy s is built from cheap plastics and feels pretty cheap in the hand but using one is brilliant, handset is so smooth its untrue, granted it wasn't like that out of the box i had to install launcher pro first but thats fine its an app from the market....
either way i still feel that HTC have shafted its users since the hd2 (last one i owned) they have not produced a single handset which is different enough from the others to warrant buying one... and still they are doing it, dhd is a decent handset (although same as hd2 in many respects) and they have released a slew of others pretty much the same but calling them by a different name... Lazy thats all...
Im unsure of what ill get this year as i am already due an upgrade but looks like the galaxy s 2 or one of the new Lg's...

Still playing with it. Installing apps. I went with Oxygen which is as bare as they come, pretty much, so there isn't much as far as bells and whistles, but apparently it's great on battery. No real noticeable speed differences. The stock Android photo manager is rubbish though. No wonder HTC developed their own. Umm... The new keyboard seems loads better. May try Swype and see if it fails as much as it did with 2.2. And hopefully the latitude problems will be fixed in the new version... shrug

o...k....if someone was to root their phone, (without reading through 85 pages worth, I did it once) is there a nodders guide to doing so? I might look into it....
-
• #4247
Anyway, how did you root your phone, Mark? You've got an iBook, right?
-
• #4248
I used unrevoked. I did it on my PC, but if you use a Mac you skip a step (updating USB drivers on the phone). It's pretty much as simple as plugging the phone into your computer.

The Galaxy S was released Jun 2010.
The HTC DHD was released Oct 2010.
"almost a year"?I've used both phones too and the Galaxy is total rubbish. It's almost unusable in some situations thanks to the now famous Samsung "lag" problem. It might be smooth if it has been rooted and had the lag fix installed. As you can see in the benchmark video, stock they are rubbish. It's not even graphics specifics that let them down, the lag problem ruins the whole user experience. DHD suffers no such problem.
What are you talking about not producing a "different handset"?
Desire, Desire Z, Desire HD, Incredible S are all different, operate differently, hit different price points have different screen sizes, etc. You are complaining because they are calling different products similar names? Are you seriously telling me that's your gripe? You know Porsche have lots of 911 versions right... ?Anyway, if you want an Android handset HTC are still far superior to Samsung.

Annoying question
So I've whittled down my smart-phone manufacturer conundrum to just HTC. The desire HD is too big so do I go for the desire or the incredible s? Someone said there was a new desire coming or is that the incredible s?
Swype... It's awesome...
