Thanks Oliver, actually I live in Bethnal Green but work in Streatham so I would probably meet up for the east drinks.
Ha, fail on my part. Skim-reading because I was too keen to get to the pub. Easts it is, then!

Intro 3:
Gone but not forgotten: bikes I used to own:
Dawes Junior Kingpin: my first bike in 1970, gold frame, single speed, did not fold despite the name. Bomb proof quality bike, rode it like a BMX and MTB before either were invented, took anything thrown at it including 'backies' for my mates. Grew out of it eventually.
2nd hand Hercules Hustler: boys 3-speed 'racer' with drops, superb unappreciated Chopper killer, wanted a 10-speed. Rammed from behind by car 1976, lived on with new back wheel, rode into back of parked van circa 1977, lived on with new forks then sold on to be unappreciated by another youngster.
Viscount Aerospace 10-speed racer, rode it round the Peak District, killed it with neglect.
Dawes Windsor, budget hi tensile frame version of galaxy, loved it, stolen from shed in Essex mid 1980s.
Dawes Synthesis Hybrid, bit dull, stolen from shed in Cornwall mid 1990s.
Carrera rigid MTB, sold to mate (not bad actually).
Moulton APB S7 with SA Sprinter 7 hub gear, comfy, heavy, troublesome hub, sold to someone in Japan via eBay for a small profit.
GT Aggressor 3, totally worn out and knackered after two years light use on trails etc.

Hi folks, just ushering myself into the forum, which i've been poking around for a good few weeks now.
Currently in Bristol but originally from sunny Derbyshire.
Previously done a bit of touring in Europe, Le Havre - Rotterdam.
Own a Tricross Comp, but had the urge to get into fixed riding after reading Sheldon's site and this forum.
So... a mate donated a nice 80s Focus Reflex (note: absolutely no info on this bike, very hard to even find anything on the brand. Apparently the current German Focus brand started early 90s). All I know is it was made in Indonesia!
Planning a nice cheap conversion to start me off. Will be looking for a rear wheel some time soon...Cheers, Pete

I've been bitten by the cycle bug and can't wait to get my hands dirty and transforming my bike! Adding stuff to my shopping list all the time.
Ha! and hello! Likewise...have been cycling all my life (well, since I was 3 or so) and have cycled in London for the 7 odd years I've lived here but always geared...got a Plug Charge just before Christmas and am hooked - am getting a mechanic/ex-essenger mate to give me lessons in bike building and design to build my own.
Really must get along to an East drinks soon too!

Hey Sup guys,
I'm Eric, used to ride BMX's for around 6-7 years and haven't rid in about 5 years due to a nasty accident which knocked my confidence in riding.
Any way, I've just purchased an second hand old Peugeot frame which I'm going to refurb and convert into a fixed gear in the coming weeks/Months.
So yeah, hello :)

Hey all, here's the intro.
Been cycling off and on for almost two decades (wow not a spring chicken anymore...). Last year did the Mt Washington Hill Climb, but been working too much to get out training. Looking to get a singlespeed and start commuting into the new job in Canary Wharf to at least be able to get out daily - I'm a better person as a result of just being on the bike. Also, enamored with the simplicity of a single speed and ideally the connection to the bike.
A few things I'm wondering about (and will search shortly)
- buy vs build for the first bike
- fixed vs. free (will admit to starting with the latter and seeing if the aging coordination can get there eventually.)
- messenger vs rucksack for commuting
Seems like a highly committed bunch - hope there's space for one more!
Regards, D

Hi everyone,
I've been toying with the idea of building a single speed bike for a while and as I'm not working at the moment, I went ahead and bought a cheapo Raleigh mixte frame to get me going...I hope. I'll need lots of parts and advice now I guess, hence the signing up. No worries though, I'm already a big fan of the search function.
I'm pretty much into classic looking bikes and love browsing the rivendell site for instance. For most of my life I wasn't actually particularly into bikes but purely considered them a natural choice for transport, thanks to having grown up in one of Germany's most bike friendly cities. Everybody cycled to get from A to B and so did (and still try to do) I. Not on earth would I have volunteered to go on a trip just for the sake of it though.
This changed when I had to borrow the boyfriend's much-loved Wanderer touring bike to be able to get to work one day. I had only ridden bikes that were rather hard work to push by then and I suddenly started to realise what fun a smooth running machine could be.My current ride is a Patria touring bike which I mainly use to get around London. I have also taken it on a few short trips in Germany, France and England so far and are hoping to explore more on it.
Now I'm looking forward to cruising around on my very "own" bike, yay!
Take care

Hi all, this is my very first post here though I have been a fan of the banter + pics on this site (esp porn / anti-porn etc) for quite a while.
I don't ride a fixed or singlespeed bike (I dislike going up hills even with compact or triple chainset!) however I do remark how the fixie trend has contributed greatly to renewing both the beauty of the bike and fun of cycling.
I've got 2 bikes- a Marin for getting to work (20 mile round trip, North to South London) also holidays which include a bit of mild off-road) and my recently completed 'project' bicycle- put together from 2nd hand bits + bargains off the web, which is used mainly for cycling to the pub and attracting admiring glances (because it's gorgeous!)
Any way, I have at last taken the plunge & signed in to this forum, prompted by my girlfriend starting to assemble her own project bike, with the able help of the lovely people at Union Cycle Works in Deptford; hence I am regularly checking out the Classifieds section.
Best regards,
Noah
