  • screw them!

  • un-screw them :)

  • surely the original freewheel only turns one way because of the ratchets, where now you have 3 fixed cogs so if you stop pedaling/resist they will unwind???
or am i as stoopid as usual?

I thought the cogs screwed onto the freewheel bit, which is attached to the hub, so the cogs don't directly attach to the hub like on a fixed, so they won't need a lockring.

are these 3 speed set ups traditionally 1/8? Must be a pretty burly derailleur. was 3/32 not around back when these were common?

  • the freewheel bit is part of the cog cluster, he has put 3 seperate fixed cogs on.
the hub itself has no freebody or ratchet system

  • i think its a freehub

    Bingo.

The derailleur I have is a 1/8 one design for a 3 speed transmission, because it's a freehub - no need for lockring.

    ?

I think the hub does have a freebody, which is why you can just put any cogs on. The way I'm reading this, is that the only difference between what was on there originally and now, is that before you had 3 cogs joined together in one block, and now you have 3 cogs not joined together and just screwed on one after another?

    Ed just make a video.

  • The hubs did have a freebody, 1/8th were the norms, 3/32 were only introduced after adding more cog, says five speed in order for it to fit in the frame.

The max number of cog is 4 with a 1/8 chain, which is the same width as a 5/6 speed 3/32 cassette.

  • this as your picture shows

is a 3 speed freewheel, with ratchets, why would you put this on a hub with a built in freebody too??

  • No, because I was unaware that the hubs was a freebody.

However looking at it, I can't see any Problem using a freewheel on a freehubs though, unless mdcc says otherwise.

  • Should have used $50's

  • un-screw them :)

I think I'm having a brain melt, but if it's a freehub body how would you stop the body rotating for you to unscrew the cogs?

  • Belgian novy fixed gear bike, just picked up today. Been lucky so far, seat post came out easy and cranks off already too. all stripped just need a big spanner to get headset off.

  • That chain guard is awesome.

  • yeah isnt it, lovely shaped frame too.

  • Dean, is the frame fillet brazed? Could not tell from a mobile device.

No problem at all having two ratchets.

how would you stop the body rotating for you to unscrew the cogs?

The freehub rotor seems to have flats on it, so you can hold it with a big cone spanner to undo the sprockets.

  • 'Lovez u mdcc'

    'And i lub u 2 'Scoble'

  • Recently built/restored this Vintage Rudge S/S Track/Path for the bike recycling project where I work in Newcastle. It rides very nice, stupid big grin after my test ride. Not really mine but couldn't resist sharing with the forum, 'cos I'm particularly proud of this one.

Apologies for the poor quality phone pic. More equally shite pics of it here:
