  • anyone got any thoughts on a netbook, something small and robust that I won't mind carrying with me to south east asia, fill up with movies and which I can write on at the beach, and which I can sell on when I return.

had a quick search here but not sure if they are any good..

The Lenovo ones seem well regarded in their durability, but honestly they're pretty much all like for like so just go for something you wouldn't mind the look of. There's no clear winner in the netbook market.

Whatever you get, it's worth buy an extra bit of RAM as it's cheap and they're all sold with an extra RAM slot spare.

  • I might have a 1st (or maybe 2nd) gen Acer Aspire one for sale soon Corny. Last time I looked the power/charger was a bit dodgey though so I'll need to check it first.

It's not in brilliant condition but the price would reflect this, I'll check tomorrow to see if it's working properly (if you're interested that it).

  • I don't get on with netbooks. They're just that little bit too small (keyboard plus awkward resolution on the screen). I just picked up a Toshiba Satellite Pro which, I think, is considered an "Ultra-portable" (13.3" screen). They're a bit more poundage than netbooks, but if you're going to be using the computer a lot you don't want to make it a painful experience.

This was a replacement for some stupid 17" HP beast which was a dumb move by me. Over powered laptops with big screens, ugh. They're less portable than proper laptops, so you don't want to cart them around, but not powerful enough to do what a desktop.

  • just need something to replace the new 13.1" mac pro I just bought in Portland, to take to south east asia, as I'll be proper backpacking, and don't want the extra weight and stress having the mac will bring...
smaller the better for me ideally,
moog, I'll be in the country early oct to beg of nov.. so will see you about it...
vb, the extra ram idea is a good one, best buy it now whilst it cheap.
will probably sell it on after I return properly in jan next year as I won't need it alongside the proper laptop..

  • What do people think of this? I've just seen the advert on TV, it's Laptop on offer from Staples:

    HP G62-a21SA Notebook PC - Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB Hard Drive, 15.6" HD Display, Windows® 7 Home Premium & HP Mouse and Bag Bundle

  • £399 btw.

  • a bit short in HD space, but otherwise look ok for the money

  • Core i3 is good in terms of CPU?

    Dell mini 10v.

You can then install Snow leopard on it if you wish and you've got a much cheaper mac that you won't worry about half as much.

  • Has anyone heard or used this company before?

    Best HD Electronics?

    Are they kosher?

  • Ok, did a little searching and came up with this and this.

If it looks too good to be true it probably is.

  • Hope this doesn't across as a boast post but I want to replace the 7 year old budget PC I built myself with a fuck off future-proof laptop with a big screen so i can spend more time on the sofa and bin the computer desk. Portability not an issue, just space saving.

Will need to run MS Office Pro for working from home and I'm looking at at this 17" Win 7 6gb i5 core Sony Vaio with a bloody BlueRay drive on it for £750.

Is there anything out there that come close in terms of price/spec? I've been struggling to find any Hp or Dell that can hit that price with those features?

  • anything with windows on it, is not future proof. Seriously have you ever met anyone who has used a windows based laptop for more than a year and a half? get a mac for £750 u can get something OKish even the basic macbook I have owned for 4 years outperforms most windows machines and that is only got 2 gig of ram

  • future-proof laptop

    Pick either one.

  • OK, very near-future proof only will do ;)

Windows including Access is a must for lots of work related reasons and that seems to be an issue for Macs.

  • Access runs fine on Mac. As does everything else I've found. Better mainly.

  • Did we see the "big screen" caveat Macophiles?

  • Good find, I'm very tempted by that. Further discount for buying two?

  • What's "Big" mean? I need to see inches, to coin a phrase I never use. If you need inches on the couch, shove your jack up your TV and hey presto.

  • = unsightly cables.

    • it annoys the Mrs when she's trying to watch Hollyoaks.

    = 1 ikle cable.

    Win/win.

Come to think of it, I have.

And doesn't Macintosh tend to be underspecced in comparison to the alternative? or has that changed?

  • I have too. But that's because it was crap when it was new, and stayed that way, so why change.
