  • No- that was the point, the 30 went bad, HP's response was "Meh, we've got your money and don't give a shit", mobo's continued to die, we never bought HP again.

  • They sound cuntish. Were they out of warranty? Did you push the issue?

  • A new query, like, which laptop to buy? Guess what? There's a thread for that.
If you don't like it, I suggest you visit one of the 30,000 computer forums available to you.

Every thread has a certain period when it is on topic, then (just like this one) it careens off into the distance.

What I wanted to avoid was the previous distractions taking over from the question I wanted to pose.

Your merge obsession is becoming rather worrying, it stated as you trying to be tidy, now it's the equivalent of washing your hands 30 times before doing anything- it has become a hindrance.

Out of warrenty by about a month, we pushed, they still said "Meh".

We'd spent tens of thousands with them, they didn't give a shit.

  • Ive never had issues with Dell, sure they have had hardware and software problems but Dell have always sorted it. I dont think its fair to say that dell and hp are more prone to issues either, no more so than any other otp manufacturer.
At the end of the day it doesnt really matter what manufacturer you go with theyre all pretty similar, just get the best spec you can for the amount you want to spend.

  • The last post in this thread was about.. guess what? Laptop choice.

I can't imagine our mob dealing with them if that was their attitude.

    Who's your hardware supplier now?

  • Dell.

    Plus one.

  • throws up in mouth

    ;)

  • That Dell knowingly sold components that they knew were faulty (in the hundreds of thousands) kind of puts me off.

  • My only experience with Dell (other than trying to fix a friend's laptop) was trying to order a tape backup drive in Melbourne. Utter.. Fucking.. Joke.

Their new Laptops have been a bit wank ... I have a D430 and it is fucking brilliant ... decent performance ... well built.

Apparently the Equivalent E series is not built as tough ( this is what I look for in a laptop ... build first ... performance second)... which is a shame.

Pity they knowingly sold duff stuff ... why do businesses think they can get away with this?

  • Get a mac. If you know very little about computers they're the shit. If you know lots about computers they're also the shit (you can compile pretty much any linux prog on them!).

    Expensive though...

  • Yes Exactly ...

  • That's half the point. The guys that run them here are using virtual machines running Windows for development. If that's all you're doing.. use a Windows machine and you don't need to add a layer of emulation shit in between. If you work in Windows and linux then.. maybe. But most people I know don't. One guy does his photography workflow using the Mac stuff and devs in Windows so I can understand that.

  • Thinkpads and Macbook Pros FTW.

Thinkpads are the only pcs that have tempted me from Macs. Extremely robust and just about as utilitarian as they come.

  • Thinkpads put the Function key to the left of the Ctl key. Immediate FAIL.

This is the ONLY acceptable layout for a keyboard:

  • Had a look around recently as the birthday is coming up and now have this ordered..

Windows 7, 4gb ram, 2.1GHz dual core processor and a decent graphics card for £369.99. 1 year warranty and free delivery swung the deal. Couldn't really find much else around with the same value for money.

You would have been better off with a core i3 equipped laptop. LaptopsDirect usuallu have good prices - I got a Acer corei3 15" laptop for circa £370 a few months ago.

  • anyone got any thoughts on a netbook, something small and robust that I won't mind carrying with me to south east asia, fill up with movies and which I can write on at the beach, and which I can sell on when I return.

had a quick search here but not sure if they are any good..
