  • might have been suggested already but i just saw in the anouncement thread that there will be power and wi-fi in the stall and thought it would be a cool idea to maybe have the forum up on some sort of big screen with the live updates showing posts in real time.

  • Nice idea, but a bit overly ambitious for my budget. My budget is along the lines of "How dirt cheap can I get everything to be?" which isn't really compatible with large screens showing anything.

Also... do you know how much internet costs at the bike show? £1,500 for a wifi bubble for three days! I mean... WTF!? I'm desperately trying to discover whether I can get a 3g signal inside Earls Court 1 as for that price I could just go purchase a 3 mifi device ( http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi )and serve my own wifi bubble. £1,500. I nearly had a heart attack.

  • of course, i just got excited by the idea and posted it!
i dont know what it should cost but 1500 for 3 days seems insane.

  • various forumengers have Android 2.2 which can create a wifi network using the 3G. I reckon we could cover all four networks between us? I would offer but my wildfire is still on eclair =(

  • Also - showing posts in real time?
    "Fuck you, melt"
    "Your bike's shit."
    "Spotted a walkenger"
    "Sad Keanu"
    etc :)

    I suppose it's a representative cross-section.

It all depends on if there's a 3g signal in the middle of EC1.

There's a conference on this weekend and I'm hoping to use Twitter to have someone there let me know if 3g is going to be viable.

If not at the very least I'm going to cheat and rent the wired LAN for a single IP, and then stick a wifi router on that and hope NAT works within a NAT'd LAN. It could get complex, it might all fail... but I'm certainly not able to stretch to £1,500 for a little radio bubble.

  • No £1500 is silly. I don't know if you can get a 3G signal in Earl's Court I'm afraid, although like you can't see why not unless the building blocks it.

  • I would be pretty surprised if there was no wifi in there. A conference centre where "business men" couldn't use mobile phones? Crazyness.

  • If you really want to represent, it needs a Rik double brake lever, discs, freewheel (because everyone thinks we're all fixed), and some sweet polo stickers. And some heavily skidded marathon 38cs.

This is my bike. If I'm coming I'll be on my Bob Jackson, or my polo bike if playing. Either way, I won't be leaving my bike outside and would like it with me if poss.

  • Your bike is yellow, though.

The building is a large steel structure, it acts like a faraday cage. Basically it blocks nearly all mobile signal. Earl's Court realise this and then sell wifi access at extortionate prices, most conferences facilities do this precisely because the buildings kill signals and so they can get away with it. To a business that will make X profit from being at a conference it's a no-brainer and they just buy it, but to me it's a make or break and I need a workaround.

I remember last year that my phone found it difficult to get a signal, but not impossible. It's just whether that's worth betting on.

Fixed LAN connect and even a Mac with internet connection sharing and it's own little bubble would be better than paying £1,500. Hell, I could afford to buy a Mac for these kind of prices.

  • Your bike is yellow, though.

    And?

And it's mostly covered in stickers.

  • DK said no yellow bikes. Read above somewhere.

  • Yellowist.

Busted for not reading the whole thread. Meh.

  • ha!

Also, no Bob Jackson's. That was also written up there somewhere.

  • Do what we did at uni and run network cables over the entire building. Fuck wifi

  • ha!

Also, no Bob Jackson's. That was also written up there somewhere.

    Bitch.

I'm coming in on a Boris bike then.

    ffs.

  • Pwned... :]

  • Proper. :-S

Or, I'm coming on my tourer and I'm wearing fluro.

    Which way to bike radar?

  • Two foughts, both proably stating the bleeding obvious... could ask British Cycling what they doing on their stand... they've got the dough and might having wifi access somehow.... and ditto for Sky who must be there in force as they're taking over cycling... both might be happy to play along and let LFGSS piggyback.

Second... any bikes on the stand for road use... front brakes a must....

Thirdly.... no, I only had two ideas, sorry.

  • Second... any bikes on the stand for road use... front brakes a must....

Why? It's not like we are selling them? Or could it be seen as encouraging people to break the law?

  • Fiddy Winks... ;]

Miss ya, buddy... Larger one is here...

  • Is there not one of those 'BT FON Hotspots' inside of Earls court, they seem to be everywhere?

  • Why? It's not like we are selling them? Or could it be seen as encouraging people to break the law?

We're trying to 'up' the profile of the community big-time, along with that goes the issue of promoting responsible cycling.

IMHO to stick an obviously non-legal roadbike up as the epitomy (shpelling?) of what we think is great about bikes would encourage those who don't want to take us seriously as a responsible force in London (in particular) cycling to have their prejudices confirmed.

It's just a small detail point - and I'm NOT suggesting everyone on the stand should wear cycle helmets, fluro and bells on their ding-a-lings though.

  • I don't think front brakes are a must.

I think a disclaimer sign on the stand saying that all opinions are the views of individuals and not the service provider is becoming a must though.
