  • I don't know of any court where a mail order bride would be regarded as 'tangible'. Sorry.

  • Jokes aside, I read it the same as you - if the brick doesn't turn up you get a refund.

  • Thanks fox.

  • What the hell is this about?

So I sold something on ebay tonight, seller sends money over straight away. Rubbing my hands with glee, thinking I'll have a decent few meals this week until I get paid....I AM SORELY MISTAKEN.

I look at the screen, available balance 0.01p, PENDING £275.00. So I think bollocks to this and refund the money asking the seller to re-send it as an "out of ebay" money transfer as a gift.

So I look up holding/pending payments and apparently paypal can hold onto your money for 21 days if you have less than 20 feedbacks, are a new seller, or are selling an expensive item. They are holding onto my £300 for 21 days, getting intrest? What the fuck is that about? They already shafted me £11 for fees...is this legal....and if so how can I avoid a pending status on my cash?

Didn't know if anyone had experience of this....

  • They are a money escrow agency. They protect sellers AND buyers. Perhaps you should've learned how the system worked before using it?

  • The key word is CAN, they rarely do.

Not being funny buddy but if I had won something on ebay and the seller refunded my money asking me to pay as a gift I would be pretty suss as there is no protection for the buyer.

Paypal can be a pain though I had my acccount frozen by them after I had set it up for suspected money laundering lol

  • @ Hippy, well now I do know their T & C's I definately think twice, and rarely sell items.

@ 4130, yes to be fair it could sound suspect but I decent enough chap.

  • Hah, I would be furious if a seller did that to me, no matter how decent they said they were.

Is your paypal account verified? I doubt it will be pending for 21 days. Have you already initiated the refund?

it doesn't matter if its verified.
had the same thing happen to me, if you want it quicker, ask the buyer to give good feeback as that automatically releases the funds.
(apparently- this did not happen for me as the cunt still hasn't given feedback)

  • I have had this problem before, I don't mind helping gout.

Give me all your details, account name, password and so on and I will see what I can do, I will also need a list of pubs you don't go into.

  • Yes, gout.

    (only one bttle left now(

  • Paypal have always been shit, but they've got much shittier recently, lots of tales of them holding up money for legit transactions. I've got 100+ good feedback on ebay but they still did it on a 'high risk' item.
They have a virtual monopoly and it is possible that they are supplementing their income by making money from holding on to yours and mine. What they need is some decent competition....

  • I never really used paypal until I got to the UK. In Australia you'd just pay the money to the person and wait for the item to arrive. I think it failed once on a cheap item. They got negative feedback.

  • I have a bunch of money - fuck I am pissed and everyword I have to keep backspacing on ! - I have some money in Paypal, 3 or 4 thousand dollars from stock footage I sell on stock footage websites, but can't get it out because of some mo' fo 'money laundering hirseshit they run passed me every year (really I am not joking - 'money landering(

I gave up trying to sort it out years ago - so I have this accumilating bunch of money from a money making idea I abadoned years ago alway building up (I reckon its 3 or 4 thousand US at the moment) and i seemingly have no way of getting to it.

    it's crazy I tell ya'

  • I've never had much problem with paypal 'money laundering' checks. I used to buy and sell a lot of things on ebay/forums, often for around £1000 at a time, so they would freeze my account every now and then, phone me up to have a chat, then unfreeze it.

give me your username and password and I will sort it out. I have contacts in high places in Nigerian government, they are generous, they emailed me just the other day.

  • Just sticking this out there for any opinion as to wether I'm exposing myself to potential fraud.

I regard myself as pretty astute in these matters and used to deal with scams daily in my previous career. However I'm out of the game now so might miss a few tricks so wondered what people thought of the risk of the following scenario.

I do freelance photography and get a good amount of very small paying jobs and I do alright. So I took a gig a few weeks back (Not yet done) to shoot a bench in a church garden in the city of London. Story is pretty much this:
American girl got engaged on the bench but always wishes she had a nice photo of it and the rose bush and red phone box behind, so her friend for an anniversary gift wants the bench dressed all romantically and beautifully shot and emailed to her in the states to print, print frame and give.

I agree to do this for a fair price and she's said we should pull the trigger on her next pay day. I'd fire up the Fixeh, do my shoot then she Paypals the fee. I then send the processed shots when that's clear.

So I'm just waiting on the word. And I've shot for clients in the US before, they need a job completing in London but organise it from there and payment has always been fine.

But now comes this. A very similar ad went up overnight, (Written quite differently and no mention of America) but this time it's a bench in Hyde Park. Otherwise the key story points are identical. Bench, sister got engaged, photograph, present....

Now a statistician could probably argue quite beautifully that this is far more likely than most people could imagine but I think it smells slightly. But if it's dodgy I don't get what I have to lose.

There's no item for me to have stolen just my time, and I can't think that I have any cash at risk via paypal. And I guess that's the big question for me, is there a paypal scam hiding in this that I just can't see ?

I know the creative/artsy community are frequently targeted by fraud due to the perception they're a soft target but I can't decide wether this is a stunning example of logical chance or an attempt to rob me.

    Who got the knowledge ?

Oops, forgot to say I'm fully conversant with overpayment scams. You know "I send you £300 because (insert bullshit here) you then take your fee and forward the rest to this account...."

  • "Her friend for an anniversary gift."
If you personally know, or are professionally connected then all good.
Otherwise, paypal or not, looks dubious

  • Yeah...
    Well iffy.

Who the hell ever got their friend an anniversary gift?

  • But what's my risk ?

  • I'm no where near an expert on this, but from what I can tell you have no risk apart from having your time wasted.

But, I will email my mate Kalems in Nigeria who is pretty nifty with this kind of thing and see what he thinks.

  • probably some bench nonce adding to his collection.

  • Bench porn.

  • But what's my risk ?

How secluded is the bench? Is it down an alleyway, or in a well-known dogging spot?
