  • Several things have happened because of this thread.
Most important is the LFGSS weight spread sheet.
If you want to join please feel free and enjoy the resource.

  • We must have done this before.

    Eat less.

  • fine. I already have a calorific loss of around 500cal/ day.
(a sensible level- not crash diet)

Are you sure? How are you recording this?

I remember reading that people generally underestimate the amount of calories they eat, and the best way to document it is by doing a video diary, after every meal (fun!).
Also, are you sure about portion sizes, as this can be another area that people underestimate?

And maybe try varying what you do - your body may be accustomed/adapted to your training if you've let it settle

Also, I find this site quite informative (YMMV)

    please?

  • many people put on weight without realising, I know, I did, and do almost every christmas! but I managed to lose 2 stone in 3 months by just cutting out bread and pasta, and by drinking 2.5l of water a day, I think the water was the biggest thing,

  • pretty sure Branwen-
been food diary- ing it up recently.

bread and pasta are pretty much staples in my diet. will try cutting them out.
    thanks Virgil.

    incidentally my rugby drinking song....
also i think its cos I don't have team sports to do anymore, and hate training alone.

anyone up for team LFGSS (off bike- doing some epic Training sessions in London Parks?)

  • make sure you don't cut out carbs completely, it will make you feel really shit, replace bread and pasta with rice, you'll maintain your energy and rice is also an anti-inflammatory so you won't be messing your stomach around

  • I'd say cut out the beer, when I did for three months, dropped back to being a 36" waist from being a 38" and made it so that everyone who sees my passport photo from before seems to believe I'm some sort of overweight monster.

  • I've put on about 2 stone since christmas just by being a fatty and eating out practically every night. I work pretty long hours by many standards - 8am to...9/10pm. I cycle a lot but that's about the only exercise I get.
I've got a fucked knee so can't run really but am going to take up swimming.

As for this carbs lark - I was reading earlier that for whatever scientific reasons are beyond me, men are more prone to having a positive effect from so called 'atkins' diets than women. they react differently to intakes of carbs so i'll certainly check out virgils rice replacement suggestion.

  • what's your alc. intake? you'll quickly drop weight if you stop drinking etoh.

  • hmmm. I have 1 to two drinks per evening and up to 4-5 if i am out. I eat a lot of pastry because I am in the cafe all day. It's having an effect. I'm quiting drinking and eating cake / pasteries for 3 months. If corny can do it and get good results I can. Goal is approx 14lbs lost.

  • I ideally want to drop about a stone and a half in the next few months, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas except for upping training and lowering input- both of which I do currently.

This leaves you with two options, drugs or magic. Amphetamines would be my choice for weight loss, but I'm 6'2" and in the low sevinties so I don't have to. Fatty.

  • We must have done this before.

    Eat less.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Is this yet something else that you 'Googled'?

  • Good luck Henry. Take every day as they come and remember to be gentle to yourself.

My tip would be to include drinking lots of warm water. I started doing that a couple of months ago as advised and I discovered to my surprise that I really like it.

  • Henry, you may be a good food user. That's probably not a scientific term. I can eat and eat and not put on much weight if I maintain my normal levels of exercise, as I seem to use food very badly. I have put on weight in the last three months, but I know that that must be because I haven't been on a bike much. I think it's both a strength--you don't have to eat a lot to get your nutrients--and a weakness: you have to be more careful and planned about what you eat. Disclaimer: I don't know the first thing about nutrition.

  • Henners, try abstaining from alcohol and replacing it with lots of water.

  • That's totally not true, Tommy, you can easily drop 2 lb per week at a healthy level. Carbs are a big source of issues, try different kinds of carbs, and eating them in a specific way, i.e., not late at night, not overloading without exercising afterwards. I think 6 servings per day is overloading. I can tell when I have carbs primarily making up breakfast and lunch, no matter how much water I drink, I feel like shit.

  • Also if- DJ is allowed 50 odd navel gazing threads, can i have one?

goes searching with red hot merge poker

  • Henry. I am with you. I am very very fat and am trying to become scrawny. One reason for taking up cycling is that it is rare to see a lardy bastard on a bike. Well I am that lardy bastard and I'm cycling.

I have lost more weight than most people on here weigh - added together. Sadly I have gained it again. Once I start losing weight and notice it, i can carry on. The difficulty is the starting. It is all psychological. I am struggling with it but must get there.

  • many people put on weight without realising, I know, I did, and do almost every christmas! but I managed to lose 2 stone in 3 months by just cutting out bread and pasta, and by drinking 2.5l of water a day, I think the water was the biggest thing,

Actually it would be the lack of grains (bread/pasta). They tend to cause insulin fun and games in the body, leading to long term weight gain.

Check www.marksdailyapple.com for some interesting low (but not atkins) carb foods and ideas for getting in shape without killing yourself.

  • I've lost about 2 stone this year. I'd been living in the countryside and having to drive everywhere, and having an emotionally trying time so tending to eat a lot and drink plenty of alcohol. So I got quite lardy. Moved back to the city and a decent length cycle commute plus doing the school run with two small children on a bike trailer, and it seemed like a good moment to lose a bit of weight.
To be honest, there was absolutely no special magic about losing the weight - just lots more exercise and lots less food. I've been doing the dieting in short-ish bursts - 2-3 weeks at a time. Your body goes into famine mode after a while if you eat less than you need, hoarding fat and refusing to give you much energy, so prolonged diets are troublesome - you just feel knackered all the time and can't ride very hard. When I've been dieting, I eat all the same food I normally eat - bread, pasta, rice, whatever - just less of it. But no sugar, no food between meals, and not much cheese (I'm a vegetarian anyway). I don't really go with the demonisation of carbohydrates - they're the primary fuel that your muscles burn, so if you're riding enough they're all good.

  • Henry, I am desperate to lose about a stone, a stone and a half. I would be happy to quite drinking for a few months if you wanted to enter a quite drinking pact.

I don't really know how to loose weight besides giving up drinking.
I'm vegan, don't eat pasta or bread, and I ride my bike a lot.

I'm trying to go running a few times a week, but can't seem to manage to get up early enough.

  • Booze is the killer; and not knowing when to put down the Haribo.

  • Fine.
I don't like having fun anyways.

    No more booze till NYC.
