Any of you folks collect cigars as an investment?
I've been looking at the prices of aged cigars on some of the sites linked to here, but I wonder how easy it would be to sell your collection privately.
I like the idea that you buy some beautifully crafted cigars, look after them for a decade, and if for some reason the bottom falls out of the market you still have some cracking matured cigars to smoke.
I'm enjoying this thread but don't have much experience with cigars, I smoke rollies because no ready rolled cigs hit the spot, and I take huge pride in my exotic cigarettes so this whole business appeals hugely, plus they're great with coffee and whisky.
So for investment potential what should I be looking for? Limited edition Cohibas and the like or will even modestly priced Cubans give a good return?
Ta.

Well I'm no expert but I think Cigars as an investment in an expensive game. Maybe if you aged some already aged Cigars (most cigars you'll buy will have been rolled at least 2 years before you buy them, and you can easily get 4 and 5 year old cigars from any vendor in London), then you would be in with a shot at making a decent return. I would have thought it fairly unlikely though. Aged Cigars will have been aged for ages (if that makes sense), and are damned expensive.
If you are serious about doing it then my advice would be to go for limited regional releases. Every year the countries where cigars are largely popular (England, Spain etc.) have their own unique regional releases. England's came out not long ago for 2010 - I think there are about 5 or 6 of them. If you were to age them for 10 years and sell them on, you could make a fair bit...
I don't know what your financial situation is, but I think there are much better investment options for a cigar novice. Smoke some cigars, come and meet us at our next session (we have been incredibly slack at sorting one out though) and decide whether the hobby/passion is something you want to continue with and explore... -

Thanks for the advice, I would be up for a well informed session when one comes about, sensory evaluation is my job so it would be cool to meet you guys to talk about what you're experiencing from a range of cigars. I shall be sampling some of Cubas finest over the summer. I don't have money left over at the end of the month generally, but if I am ever able to put some away I prefer to invest wisely in tangible goods which I can enjoy owning until the time comes to cash in rather than just stick it in the bank and waste it when I'm a bit short for a trip to the pub.

Anyone else interested in a group buy?
I know Vinylvillian was thinking about some Reyes
I like the Trinis, happy with most brands, especially Boivar & Partagas.
My humidor is getting drained by this incessant good weather. -

Hi all,
So there seems to be some interest in another group buy. I've included Cigars that people have shown some interest in, as well as some (excellent) wild cards...
I think I would prefer to collect all the money before placing the order. So put your name next to slots, and once boxes have filled up I will PM you with money requests.
Cheers,
Jamie.**

Is no one interested in the Saint Luis Rey?? Something a little different, it was originally released before the 1960's, and was discontinued this year - so presumably will become harder to find..
I've never tried any from the line, but I'm intrigued.

I've just taken myself off the SLR list. I've spent far far far too much money on Cigars recently, and If I'm going in on the Sancho Panza, and the Juan Lopez I don't think I can realistically afford anything more.
-
• #721
I have heard the SLR's are good, but way better after quite a bit of ageing, around 4 years from what i have read
-
• #722
^ Yeah, I've read that too. The Cigars from this vendor usually come with a bit of age on them. Plus if he has older boxes in stock you can request them specifically.

OK. That's all Cigars accounted for (I removed the SLRs due to lack of interest). I will be PMing everyone this evening with my bank details as well as amounts owed. Unfortunately I wont be able to place the order until I have received all the cash. I'm going to Glastonbury on the 23rd of June, and wont be back till the 29th. If you are all quick with payment, then I would hope to get most of the Cigars to you before I leave... It may not work out like that though.

Is there any interest in another box of Sanchos?
I think they were either 24 or 28 quid each - the guys at Cigars Unlimited said that you can smoke em now, but they reckoned if you age em for 4 years, then you will have one hell of a smoke. They are looking after them for me, as i dont trust myself no to smoke em!
