  • Had a pretty sureal one last night. Went to Hot stuff in Vauxhall. It was full when we tried to make a booking but they lovely guy said we could sit next door in the chip shop they also own. So there we sat with out BYO bottles of vino, stuffing our faces with tasty ruby as people I can only describe as 'regulars' came in for their burgers and battered savs. Anyhow at £57 for 5 people, it is delish.

  • @ aran- royal china on is a must but can be a bit pricey, you can also try phoenix palace which is also just as good and is also on baker st situated north of the tube station.

shanghai in dalston was a disappointment.

  • Dragon Castle in Elephant and Castle is not good.

  • hahah I still haven't been in that particular MSG palace.

    whats wrong with it?

  • Its just not very nice food compared to the others, and the menu is short. Service was exceptionally rude when we were there too.

I love this place (hot stuff)...cosy, cheap, and a good little atmosphere! really need to go again...great value and you always leave stuffed.

  • and this place, obv... http://francomanca.co.uk/

no been mentioned here before (except http://www.lfgss.com/thread1773-264.html#post623254 ? )

unfortunately always rammed with guardian readers of south london (who are all lovely, of course). not open sunday. but amazing pizza.

  • franco is amazing. I go there for lunch sometimes when I think im living the dream...

  • thankfully it's one of those 'living the dream' occasions which doesn't break the bank ;)

  • Defo Shanghai...

yeah thanks again for the recommendation Balki

  • +10000 to Hot Stuff. As an Indian who knows a bit about food, I wouldn't say that the food is great, but it's certainly a cut above most curry houses.

What makes it exceptional is the price, the service and the naan bread IMO. Also, the fact that it's BYO and always has great atmosphere doesn't hurt either!

@ Marlon, thanks man, I think I will try out Royal China as it is the father's 50th!

Also, +1 to Franco Manca, just don't visit the woefully inept Chiswick branch.

Newly opened in Kennington is the Tommyfield Gastro Pub. Haven't eaten there yet, but when it was the White Hart before, it was okay and currently has 50% off all food, so you can't go wrong.

While I'm here, my favourite cheap eat in London has got to be Mama Thai on the Walworth Road. Genuine, spicy and fresh Thai food in a friendly, BYO setting. Really worth a visit!

  • I have it on good authority that Floating Lotus delivers acceptable dim sum too.

  • I know the answer is 'probably not', but any recommendations for somewhere tasty to eat around clapham..... maybe even one of those portuguese places on stockwell road?

  • This place is worth the trip south. I wouldn't really call it up market as it's by some rail bridges in the back of Peckham and it's not done up with really dim lighting and flouncy waiting staff. But the place is really cool and friendly, it's reasonable priced and most importantly of all the food is magnificent. It's a brilliant little gem and you would be advised to book.

I've been informed a Hells Pizza has opened there... certainly worth a look

  • TSK - I went to ganapati a couple of months ago. Amazing. Since then I've been to Goa, and I must say that its pretty spot on; really fresh and light for a curry. I was looking for something more clapham area though as friend who I'm meeting lives there (la dee da) and well since I have a bike, it always seems to be me going to meet people. Maybe I'll be selfish and lazy today.

  • Bodeans

  • +10000 to Hot Stuff

YES! It is awesome. Little Bengal on Fulham Palace Road does great curry out west too.

I think they must bus them all in from north London... You should see them turning their noses up/recoiling with fear/disgust when the locals squeeze past the mile-long queue to do their Saturday shopping in the market... Cunts, murder's too good for them...

  • Anyone know a good Thai restuarant, not take away in East London?

  • Yumyum in Stoke Newington.

Excellent food and 2 for 1 cocktails before 7:30pm.

  • Rosas, Hanbury St.

They do a crackin poached salmon dish.
