  • what rusty said

if you are used to a double sided mtb pedal would suggest speedplay zeros as a really easy pedal to change to

  • Mainly a stiffer interface. The larger cleat means the pressures spread over a larger area, so there's no 'hot spot' - Better for longer distances.

  • Also you get to walk like a knob.

  • Only kiddin', I don't have that kind of dosh or that little sense........!!!!

Nice looking system, I'll certainly consider them ( the steel version of course)...

    Cheers

  • they offer a wider support. some people feel that their foot is rolling off the side of the pedal with spd's so prefer the wider support of a road cleat. personally i don't have that problem so am happy to forgo the disco slippers for now. don't forget the pedals are single sided so maybe not as easy to get into.

i have changed my mind since then. i love disco slippers.

the stainless steel ones are the best bet, last longest of all their pedals and not that much heavier than the ti ones - the chromo ones are shortest lived

  • Yes

  • so are shoes and cleats basically interchangeable?

  • do those pedals look shit and I shouldn't use them or like they still have some life in them?

  • pretty much yes.
and those pedals should be fine for a good while yet.
my pair of those lasted 10 years before i gave them away, and they are still good

  • sweet! Ok, time to have a chat with gerald about those shoes. I think I'll be clipless by tomorrow.

  • good on you. good luck too
    x

  • thanks!

hi Ewan, I see you lurking down there!

  • and jenne, make sure you get those cleats, they are single release, not multi release which can cause some unwanted unclipping.

  • Ha! Busted. Hi!! When am I gonna see you and your husband (at Wests?), I was gutted I missed your wedding. Admittedly I was stuck in Scotland for a while...

Anyway, back on topic, I have two pairs of Time ATAC Aliums going spare, you're welcome to them for a bargainlicious price. IMO much better than SPDS. You will need some new cleats though...

  • single release? ugh, new questions. the pedals that Diapo has (the girl whose bike I tried after the ride) has the kind with a bar at the front and a bar at the back. I don't know what those are called. It was clip down, unclip sideways. do these shimano sh-51s work the same way?

ewan, I have no idea what that means. all I know is that I have pedals already, will be getting shoes I can afford from coppiThat, and these cleats only cost £15. right now it's the cheapest way to get me started, then I can re-evaluate in the future.

  • oh, and re: wests - not for donkeys if I get work in Bromley. If I'm able to work in Southwark, then soon.

ha, fair enough! once you've had clipless you'll never go back...

hope to see you around soon

  • jenne, the ones you tried were time atacs, the same ewan has

  • hmmm...those were nice. but I'd have to get different pedals. eh, this should be fine to start with. I'll only be out around £25.

  • Jenne ... thanks for all your investigative work, and everyone for useful info ... helping me out too!

  • single release? ugh, new questions.

you need the shimano single release cleats code SM-SH51 it will be on the packaging and on the cleat.

  • ha! no prob, Julia. Hey, if I go for the aliums and you want my SPD pedals they're yours. you're giving me shoes and helping me with sewing, after all.
