STOLEN: Surly Long Haul Trucker, Olive Green, 56cm/700c. From Bethnal Green. May or may not have rear pannier rack. I suppose it will find a new owner through Brick Lane back alleys. Has all stock components as per Sury spec sheet. I've not seen many around town, so I'm hoping it will turn up sometime. If anyone spots it, get in touch please.
***Not the actual one in the pic, but identical minus the front pannier rack.

Just a quick update from the Police regarding my friends bike and the others that we found being sold by the same guys is that they cant prove they are stolen from the add so are not going to persue it and they are too busy!
So in my opion the only thing the Police are good for regarding bike theft is to give you a crime number to claim on insurance.

Don't worry, once the London Bike Hire scheme come into effect, they'll finally act upon it when the hire bicycles end up getting stolen in a large number.
in the meantime, it's still worth reporting to the police, under reporting could give the police the impression that bike crime aren't that big a deal.

Can anyone also let me know the websites these sh!ts use?
Also would it be worth looking round the back of Brick Lane?? -

Thanks very much for pursuing this, Neil. Would you mind very much if I edited all your posts together into a case study on theft? It is a fairly complex and very typical case. In fact, I think I'll put a thread up asking for such case studies. We (LCC) are just starting our big campaign against bike theft.

the d-lock to be used as a weapon? -

Just spent far too long reading through this thread...the rate of posts concerning stolen bikes is pretty shocking. I am unaware of the scale of bike crime in Glasgow...I am sure it is not great, but from experience we have a large population of idiots willing to just kick the fuck out of a parked bike.
It was nice hearing the few times a bike has been recovered, and sorry to anyone that never got theirs back...cunts -

How much trouble would a thief be in if caught red handed stealing one bike ?
A slap on the wrist ..?
-
• #3663
not much trouble really, caught by the police, release on the same day.
unless it's a serial theft, probably a couple nights and some fine.

the d-lock to be used as a weapon?no to lock your bike to something if you see it, so you have time to call the roz/backup and the little shits can't ride away with it easily.

We should do a mass 'cycle round London looking for stolen bikes day'. Print out all the pics and have a Police database with us. I cannot believe how many are being nicked. We would have to do it 'underground' though!

^ up for that, will never happen tho..

Hey Oliver, feel free to copy and paste my posts. I have come to realise this is a fairly typical occurance and that is why I took the route of reclaiming the bike.
If anyone does take the same approach on hydsight it could be worth making an excuss of having to go and collected cash so you can phone the police.
Also always go with a friend (hopefully someone large) they can act as like they are advising you on the bike. They can also make an excuse to leave if the seller wants to go the cash machine with you and when around the corner phone the Police.
Another tip from friends experiences with the Police is they come A LOT faster if you tell them there maybe vialance towards the theif if he doesnt hand over the bike. I know its not right and some people may have issues with that but for this tacktic to work you want to garruntee they turn up.
Another good place to look for bikes is www.bikeshd.co.uk quoted a while ago by a forum member

I guess go and check round brick lane, as lots of parts end up there.
Both those bikes should be locked better though, a simple change of technique by putting the d lock through frame and wheel together, could have saved at least a wheel from each bike. Then add another cable or d lock for the front wheel. Old chain through saddles...etc.

Yeah we have parked on Ashwin St many times and have been locking up this way for years (although going through the rear wheel is indisputable it was not really possible in this awkward location)...I always wondered whether it was better to park your bike somewhere out of sight or in plain view...in the end I think this proves that hiding it just makes it easier to conceal the fact that you are stealing sh*t. This was the first time we tried going behind that brick wall and really only because the usual lock-up posts were full. Definitely investing in a second lock though...
Behind me are 4 flats. They have a central hallway that overlooks my garden. I think someone saw the Cannondale in garden. Came back and had the pleasure of 3 more bikes. They left the Greg le Mond TT old school and a girlies Hardrock but lifted the TT. Police have closed the case even though to gain entry to the gardens there are 3 locks with codes and high walls. They have done no further investigation but I know a Policemen who is going to review. I am surrounded either side by trusted neighbours. The only way through was from the back. I am near Kingston gate, Richmond Park. Beers on me for any recovery!! Wait, wait, wait!
