tynan have you tried a verify and permission repair of the disks either from your other mac or from the install disks? run the hardware test too.
i cured a mac just by doing that and didn't need tostart using file salvage (better than data rescue imho)the firewire died in my 5year old g5 last week. totally fried. all sorted with a £13 pci FW card.
no point spending money on a repair when i'll be buying one of the new i7 towers when they come out. -

Aah - I see. Was in the same position - nothing I could do could get it back & I figured it would most likely only fail again so I just bought a new hard drive from these guys:
They do installation & recovery too if you need it - they did the install for me - highly recommended.
Cheers, macupgrades' recovery service thing might come in useful.

if someone can resolve this, i'm gonna grab the old one from work

i spoke to a few mac types, and they said it is a common problem, something to do with the motherboard.

The i7 iMacs (the 27" screen ones) are freaking freaking fucking freaking crazy. The screen makes my HD cinema displays look like cheap shitty soft £49.99 PC whorehouse monitors - the machine itself is super silent and it is bowl shockingly fast . . . I mean super duper bastard fast.

From my experience worth doing. The G4 that died is still going strong 1.5 years later, after the new hard drive was installed.
If you can get DiskWarrior to recover the files you need I'd just get a new PPC compatible hard drive from macupgrades & install it in your old machine and then re-install your OS/ software etc. Probably just as cheap / cheaper than buying a second hand one and I would think more reliable.
Or just pray for mac salvation.....

don't pay over the odds for a drive from macupgrades just get one from dabs or ebuyer
i bought a firewire card and 500gb oem drive for £50 last week
swapped one of the drives out and restarted from a super duper clone and i was up and running with no data loss of software reinstalls to do.super duper is quicker than time machine making the clone.
if you need to do data recovery then check out file salvage before sending it somewhere expensive. have recovered a few failing drives this way, it does take a long time to work it's way through a drive though

they are superfast but the screens aren't up to retouching work and i have a nice 24in eizo. the imacs are actually faster than the current powermacs. only a fool would buy a powermac now (unless it was heavily discounted)

Cheers - good info. The only reason i used macupgrades was that I had no idea what drive I needed (or how the hell you got into a G4 ibook case to install it - again cheers apple).
I'm going to run that ibook into the ground & beyond - In your face Jobs!!

Heh, this thread took a turn...
G4 and G5 hardware problems will be unrelated.
G5 iMacs were plagued by over-heating resistors that can cause all sorts of power and display related problems. To check if your G5 iMac has been affected just take the back off and check for any "bulged" resistors. If they're there then kick up a fuss and Apple may fix your machine for free. You'll need a full logic board replacement (costly).
Hobo, I can fix Macs, but I would void your warranty. You'll find that some pencil lead on the fan should clear it up. The Superdrive will likely need to be replaced, grab a cheap one off the bay.
To echo the comments above, a "burned out" or "fudged" machine will still hold your data unless the HD failed, there are loads of ways to go about this. The best one being to remove the HD and install it within an external enclosure.

My almost 5yr old powerbook keyboard partially died, i pulled it apart monday and obviously once i put it back together it wouldn't turn on again. Pulled it apart again and now it boots up but the keyboard is still fucked.
I'm going to borrow a usb keyboard from work try reinstall the os in the hopes that work but knowing it works with a usb keyboard has me guessing it's the hardware. -

So that iPad thing, can it use wi-fi but also mobile data? But it's not a phone?

I'm gonna wait until they bring out a smaller one

Ha ha! That's basically the problem though isn't it, they've got where they are by miniaturising stuff. This is too big to chuck in your pocket but not useful enough to bother carrying round, surely?

To answer my own question, wi-fi iPads ship March, 3G April.
I'll stick with my iPod touch. Downloaded GTA for it today, amazing.

Looks shit, an iPhone that's too big to fit in your pocket... I don't get tablets... The first turkey Jobs has pulled out of his hat in quite a while...

I would buy it in a heartbeat if there were any kind of content deals for it (TV, Movies, Magazines, books, anything!). The thing i love about the kindle is that you can get the newspapers you subscribe to deliverd to it automatically.
