  • Burn it.

Tried that, no luck, it just burned.

  • Jeebus broke it coz you is evil and shit innit

There was the smell of the holy trinity (musty with an overtone of peas) just before it went tits up.

  • My ibook died of shitlogicboarditus so i took out the HD thinking i could boot from it on my new macbook but its intel innit and my ibook wasn't so it don't work. :(
I have loads of work locked up in the diskvault bollocks that i can't get at.
    Bum.

Stick the disk back into the old ibook and start it up in target mode (hold down T as it starts up) - it is then just a hard drive so connect your old ibook to your new macbook like you would a hard drive and copy the stuff you want over.

  • Still, I'd like one of those new itile/tablet/slate/jazzmag things that no-one has seen yet!
    Ooh! I hope it's shiny!

    iJazz

    My money is on iJazz.

Oh Tynan....if only I hadn't trashed the ibook carcas and taken it to the tip already. I am truly sorry I am in a mess all of my own making. Forgive me?

  • I've missed Tynan. Lolo'clock.

  • My Powerbook G4 just burnt out last night... pretty much lost my shit loads of work now....

    (no backup)*

  • Mine too, totally fuckeroonied, exactly as above - with the fan thing too - I have done all the target disk/PRAM/battery out/ram shake it all about/verbose mode/blah blah/kick it/rebuild the directory (DiskWarrior) . . and so on.

    Nothing works.

Apparently a lot of G5s that are 4-5 years old have gone bad like this.

Did you manage to sort yours out ?

I know the HD is fine as I can see it in target mode.

Went out and bought a mother fucking 8GB 27" iMac i7 - I currently 'run tings' - but it would be cool to get my G5 back to tax paying status as I have loads of stuff on there that is very useful . . . .

    Any clues anyone ?

I had a G4 that did exactly the same thing. I'm sure it's planned obsolescence on Apple's part - nice.

I can't remember exactly how I did it but I was able to retrieve most of the data I think using DiskWarrior. It was a while ago but I think there is a scavenge mode that allows you to scan the corrupted disc and back up to a different hard drive.

You might just have saved my day. HAH!

...and this. I was freaking out at the idea of data loss.

It is too late for forgiveness, ye shall burn in Dell.

    lolo'racist.

  • iJazz

    My money is on iJazz.

iJizz or iJizm or even iJism

You should be able to access the hard drive if you use a caddy or some cables to connect it to your Mac.

DiskWarrior is doing it DiskWarrior-ish magic just right - no problems there (you gotta love DiskWarrior) - but I can't get the actual machine to start up under it's own steam - I need to get it working as I have loads of software that only runs on a PPC chip (and not Intel) . . . . such classic stuff as the music for the current Dettol ads - when they want to revise the music for the next set of ads I am screwed.

    :s

I might even have to buy an old (working) PPC/G5 from somewhere. (talk about shoving your money down the toilet).

    :O

    50p - cash.

well thats what i thought too, but the files are in the diskvault, its only possible to see those files (and remove the diskvault) when booting up from it, but i can't do that cos its not set to run an Intel mac. I need another powerpc mac really, but i don't know anyone with one at the mo. I tried asking that guy in the guardian technology section, but he never replied. I'll just wait until i meet someone with an od mac i guess...

    Yeah, what he said.

  • i have a G4 in a storage unit.

    Somewhere.

    Near Guildford.

do you have any M-Audio drivers in it? the G5 i sold my mate starting doing what you describe once he put an M-Audio card in it.

    it's a long-shot, as i know you're a professional..

  • @tynan, na. my boss went out and bought a recon. jobbie.

waiting to get the old one off them :)

  • chinny recon.

"professional" ? - You obviously didn't hear the music for the recent Holland & Barrett Christmas TV campaign then ?

No M-Audio drivers or stuff like that . . . in fact no changes at all, it just 'went funny' one day.

Aah - I see. Was in the same position - nothing I could do could get it back & I figured it would most likely only fail again so I just bought a new hard drive from these guys:

    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/

They do installation & recovery too if you need it - they did the install for me - highly recommended.

  • thanks i love you all.

any suggestions to the problem above though?

i may just go and buy it.

+1 awesome! just saw this.. i got a snazzy mouse and it wouldnt do any cool scrolling with tiger, tried downloading it but you have to put it on an external drive and fuck around. i want snow leopard

Damn! From what I can tell this has happened to quite a few PPC G5s - no one seems to have found a common solution . . . my little brother has just (Monday!) qualified as an Apple certified technician and I am going to get him to work his voodoo magic on it and see if he can raise it from the dead like Jesus did to all his . . . . er . . . himself.
