  • i dunno, it might be safer to ditch it, especially if the car is unstoppable and going downhill..

here's the version with real audio

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2fjgcC8Y1g

  • Brakes off, tiny bit of power, keep the wheels going at the speed you're traveling to try and get some grip = yes.

Slamming on the brakes and then jumping out of the car = no.

That chap's licence should be taken away, at least during the winter months.

  • Defo dont ditch, but it'd be mighty hard to gain control on a gradient.

  • That video is just brilliant. Is it wrong to admit I couldn't stop laughing?

Feet off the pedals and STEER if that happens!

  • I can't believe the stupidity of some people! What kind of thought process must you go through to decide that abandoning the car as it gathers speed sliding downhill on ice is the best option?

  • Did the driver get run over when he jumped out in and the car spun round?

  • And the driver is committing an offence by leaving a vehicle with the engine running.

  • "Whilst trying to get out of the street on a hill covered with ice, I got the car wedged on the curb. When I tried to look and see if I could get free, I slipped... then I slipped again "

  • WOW, from the bbc website:

    Racist!

  • hahahaha some good ice fail videos, keep em coming...

  • Loving the anger on that last video.

    AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    Thought process? Fear, more likely.

it kinda makes sense when you think about it, when you ditch at alow speed you know that you won't injure yourself (unless you happen to run over yourself), if you have no traction you can't control where your car will end up, or how fast it will go before it stops you risk smashing into a tree at 30+ MPH, or having it flip over, etc..

think about being on a skateboard at the top of a hill .. better to ditch early and definitely suffer minimal pain than to risk crashing and burning at a much higher speed.

    It makes no sense.

"unless you happen to run over yourself"... well no-one's going to hit the brakes for you, you'll be nice and smooshed.

And if you have a collision at 20mph or 30mph with a seat belt and air bags you're going to be fine.

Besides... all the way up until the moment you have come to a standstill you have the potential to recover from the slide, to get enough traction to regain control.

Jumping from a vehicle that's moving is absolutely stupid. The driver should have their license revoked until they go pass their test again.

Then again... summer tyres in winter is stupid... drivers should take responsibility for the safety of others as a result of their actions and realise this means that they shouldn't drive when it's icy unless it's critical and that they should consider winter tyres when this stuff seems to be happening more frequently (it's less than a year since cars were sliding about gleefully.

How about if theres a T junc at the bottom of that little hill withbuses/lorries ect
traversing cars path......Do the right thing and stay in the car, slide into traffic,
or Bail.....as your motor is goin anyhow(in this case) might as well save yer skin no.?
    .................M

    holy shit that's incredible!

You're on ice... you're going to go the same direction and likely end up in the same place.

Now, would you rather do that with jeans and a shirt to protect you... or would you rather be inside a metal box that has a roll cage, crumple zones, restraints, air bags, etc?

Which one is more likely to come out of a side-on collision with another vehicle in better shape?

Can you guarantee no-one is in another vehicle behind you?

Christ all-mighty... I hope to hell that when it's icy out that you lot aren't driving.

  • Hm, yeah VB you are probably right. Thinking about it, it is unlikely that a car would build up enough speed on an icy road to badly injure a passenger, it would most likely crash into a pavement/wall/car before it gets up to any serious speed - at least in most urban areas. That fiesta was on a narrow, residential road, it wouldn't have been going very fast when it would have stopped moving. On a country lane/big A-roads, it might be different

Totally agree, normal tyres just do not work well at all in icy conditions, best thing to do it not drive, or only drive on gritted roads!

  • it make sense if you're on a bicycle - ditching it as soon as possible to reduce harm on your person.

but when it come to cars, going slowly, on a *slight *slope, sheer stupidty.

it only make sense if the cars is going silly mile per hours toward a cliff that you've no way of stopping, then naturally you should ditch it.

I hate it when people step on it like there's no tomorrow, as if that'll create traction, and it's worse in London where people came from countries where snow isn't in their language.

  • this guy got run over and he walked it off.

  • ^ it's possible this was clearly just in an estate.
