• Anyone ever get issues with stability of colour on powder coat? I had an alu frame done signal red which for the first week was red, but now I am sure it is more of an orangey red. Must be a trick of the light I guess but my eyes feel like they are deceiving me!

Wouldn't surprise me if something went wrong as the place I took it to didn't turn out great. The plus side is it was only £30, with the downside being you get what you pay for (took 3 weeks even though said it would be a couple of days, had to paint stripper BB, Headset as they didn't cover as they said they would, and it has a few areas which are not smooth) Just put it down as a loss as the place seemed a bit back street and not really worth arguing with if you know what I mean, plus I wanted to get bike back on the road.

  • Anyone know what the score is with getting the larger type of metal flakes done in a powdercoat? I'd like to get the bigger flakes but less of them... Anyone seen a p/c frame like that?

    Speak to Francis here http://www.adeptindustrialfinishers.co.uk/powder.html

He's got samples of large flake in all kinds of colours.

  • oval, such a good job for a rattle can one! Looks perfect, best finish i've seen on here. Good work!

Armourtex (e.g.) refuses to use any flakes, I asked them, and took it anyway and still nothing. Flakes will mess up the all equipment and they won´t do it.

Had mine flaked by Adept no problem..

  • Armourtex also has flakes, they just won´t use yours, or mines.
    (everyone else´s cool)

  • Seems like Armourtex has updated their home page (or am I uber slow noticed today finally!?)
In their 'Gallery' section, there is one with silver metallic finish! (or am I dreaming!? or is that just gray...)

  • Here's my Carlton fresh back from a session at Armourtex

It is coloured in RAL 3020 TRAFFIC LIGHT RED and has also been lacquered.

The chrome fork ends survived fine - they were solid beforehand - and look very solid now with a cover of clear-coat.

Finish has a few lumps here and there it seems slightly thin on the lug edges and the border between colour and chrome isn't too sharp. Other than these nit-picks it looks awesome, the lacquer is incredibly shiny giving the colour a deep rich look. For the price very good value.

The Armourtex guys are friendly and helpful with samples when choosing colours.

    Cheers!

    no pics showing?

please show us the gorgeous red...

  • Still tossing up between getting my Mercian resprayed at Mercian or Armourtex. Not really sure if it's worth the extra £120+ plus 4 weeks without a bike in order to get a barbers pole, lugs lined and decals put on. Surely it'll just increase the chance of it getting nicked? And the extra monies could be spent on a beastman lock.

Time to get out the seized stem for now. Decide later. Life's hard.

  • although armourtex is a great hard wearing finish, you will wish you had spent the rest on a proper finish a couple of months after you do it.
    life's not that hard

  • Life really isn't that hard. Good advice.

  • I know powder coating is all the rage here but I was dissappointed by it myself. It is far too thick and never looks as good as 'proper' paint. Might be fine for some fence railings or kids climbing frame etc,. but not nice enough for a quality bike frame and it's finer details.

  • @ l-bear - you can also try your local garage, some will spray a frame for £40-60 with auto paint.

if done right a good, glossy thick and smooth powder glaze can look really appetizing. it really is something else than proper paint, but is nice in it's own way. imho

+1. If done the right way, with the right finish.

  • Quick question, has anyone had their frame 'Steel polished' by Armourtex (ala 14Co bikes finish)

    any idea of price?

Aye about £60 for me. Maybe £65

    Great finish.

  • Eeeeeeexcellent :)

  • what is steel polished?

  • looks like a clear powdercoat should look (when in reality a clear powdercoat ends up a dull grey), think the 14co polo bikes that BAD have.

  • ah i see
