RPM? Fast?
44/22 today:
Max speed - 32mph
-
• #728
200 rpm...?
-
• #729
44/16 - for first time today..... so much nicer for my low cadence style than 42/16
But still bobbing around a little when accelerating to over 22mph (it was even worse on 42/16), it's almost as if my rucksack takes on a pendulum action? wtf am i doing wrong?

Not stabilizing your hips/core enough.

new bike = new gear.
48 / 18 - free n easy
this is what I'm on
it's perfect for round town, but it can get a bit spinny down the underpass at hyde park corner if i get too much speed up

200 rpm...?
Yeah, about 205rpm.
Learning to spin without bouncing takes time, but you can smooth things out a bit in the meantime by doing what CJ says above. However, it's a bit esoteric - how do I do that whilst riding? - so here are some simpler steps:
- drop your saddle 5mm
- concentrate on unweighting your feet on the upstroke - feels a bit like trying to swiftly bring your knees up towards your chest
- do some progressive spin-ups: I can't just jump on my bike and hit 200rpm without wrenching something; quick 5 secs up to perceived 95% max cadence; repeat after a few minutes; by the 4th or 5th time you do this, you're perceived 95% max cadence will be ~10-20rpm faster.
- push against your bars without locking your arms. This will help stabilise your hips/core.
- relax
- drop your saddle 5mm

Increasing RPM = roller training

Thx CJ, shoulders/chest up, stomach in - just as cyclefit told me to do then!

These sound like good tips, I'll have to try this. I try to think in "circles" rather than up and down with the pedaling motion, find this helps you bounce less and seem to be able to maintain the spinnyness for a longer period.
- drop your saddle 5mm

48 / 16 freewheel
48 / 18 fixed -
• #737
FFFFFFFFUUUUUUCCCCKKK.. OK. general consensus/straw pole says 48/18. I'm running a 42/16 but spinning like a twatting sowing machine. So.. It's a 48/16 I'm going to go for. better for TT training.. No so good for dodging the back end of a bus.. But I'll be going so fucking fast I won't feel much I guess..

44 / 17 on one for round town
and
46 / 16 or 17 on the other for speed -

42/16
OTP bike and that's what came with it. -

my geared road bikes have taken over from my fixed bikes as my daily ride, as i have a fairly long commute that isn't one gear friendly. as such my fixed bikes are now more of a a toy that i play with purely for pleasure.
the result is Ive gone for a much higher gear and leave the hills for days when im riding the road bikes. used to ride 52x20 daily everywhere, but now ride 52x16, although on windy days i find pretty difficult to get on top of that gear.

Building my first bike at the moment and I'm not sure what gear ratio to go with. I live in East London and I'm thinking 44x16 or 44x17. Any ideas??
-
• #745
Of the 2 I'd go 44x17. Not too spinny, but easier to get up hills like the Alpe d'homerton.

Thanks! I still can decide what to get hmmm

start of with 70GI and then decide if you want harder or less hard. you will not find out what gear ratio to use on the internet.

building up a singlespeed for my brother for his chrstmas present (first ever foray into building a bike) and i've gone for 38/16.. will this be ok? I dont think he has ever done any excercise before..

start of with 70GI
That's helpful as his two options are 68 and 72. Out of those two, I'd go for 44/17.
^^^ 52/11, nice!
Running 44/11 at the mo, MTB 26" Wheels. 104 Gear Inches I believe.
SS though. Top speed on a flat so far has been 33mph.
Don't really struggle pulling off from the lights. I usually seem to speed off compared to others.
Went to Epsom the other day, majority of the journey was going against the wind. Quite horrible that was. Tired me out.
