  • Get both, your dropouts will be able to accommodate the change. It's only a tenner for another sprocket.

  • It's only a tenner for another sprocket.

Not if you appreciate the quality of a Phil Wood sprocket, or even the bling of an EAI Gold Medal.

  • i calculate it as 69.9 and 74.3

    using 27 x chainring/cog

  • That's trackie talk.

  • i calculate it as 69.9 and 74.3

That would be true for 700x30c tyres

Schwalbe Speed Cruiser 30-622 - Nice.

It's this guys first fixed gear.

The money will on a Thomson BMX stem or something instead...

  • mitre - so what would the 27 be for 25 tires?

  • 49-13

Laps of Richmond Park just about doable (up to a max of 4).

Never run out of gears on a group ride.

    Hard rides out to Windsor.

    Surrey Hills impossible.

  • building up a singlespeed for my brother for his chrstmas present (first ever foray into building a bike) and i've gone for 38/16.. will this be ok? I dont think he has ever done any excercise before..

That's pretty spinny (I used to ride 39 x 16 and found it a bit silly riding fixed) but should be ok if it's a freewheel as he can coast.

    44/17 44/16
    68.9 73.2

...is that like 99GI? That's pretty big for RP!

+1 you must have legs like frikken tree trunks.... I've been wimping out for the last few week doing RP on 44/16.... I'll get my coat

  • 46 X 18 for the fixed (charge scissor with BMX spit riser bars) for going uphill in Lisbon - might add a 16T later for going speeding just for the kicks

46 X 16 for the freewheel paddy wagon (for sprinting and generally exercising around the city and possibly some marathons) - might add a 14 or 15T cog later on for bombing from lisbon to cascais

I ride up the hill to the start of the H25/2 on 53/14; it's surprising what you can do when you don't have a choice.

320' in 2 miles, a bit more to the roundabout at the top as the start is 1/4mi. back down the hill.

  • This one is useful if you can't get the Java one to work.

Have you done the run from Guincho to Sintra - great roads & views, just very dodgy drivers everywhere.... makes London feel v safe

not yet, but i will. probably next spring or even before. yeah, drivers around here don't have much respect for cyclists but hell, i'm big and they're afraid that i bust their cars ^__^

the problem going from guincho to sintra are the steep climbs. cannot do those with 46 X 14 or even 15, no fucking way... i'd be dead halfway. But 46 X 16 would be ok I guess...

  • building my first fixie.. thinkin of plumbing for 42x14 as this is my most used gear on my geared bike and i just gotta start somewhere cos sprockets don't cost the world and i was never very good at maths and all the gear ratio calculators on line are doing my swede in!!

I gather this combo has only one skid patch but i'm gonna use it for commuting in flat old oxford not skid comps so i'm reckoning this won't be a prob. whadda the pros reckon? (don't shout!! first fixie, and i'm not the most practical spanner wielding lass but i'm up for the challenge!)

  • http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears/ try this one, i was using it last night, verry good.

  • 86.4 on the track bike. Tried higher but it's too hard to get the jump on people, tried lower and you spin out, especially when I race with the seniors (I'm youth) so my 86.4 is a good inbetweeny gear thats good for top speed, but can also be accelerated quickly when I get the pistons firing

    Peace out!
    Steve

  • I run a 32 17 on my genesis, does fine for most things of froad..just :)

  • At the moment, 44x11 on 26"x1.25 MTB.
    Not bad to commute with.
Had bit of a hard time though going down south to Surrey last month, hills & strong winds... Wasn't nice.

Saving up for a decent touring/road bike in the new year.

  • 49x18 (71gi I think), pretty ideal for me. 18 skid patches is quite reassuring.

  • 44x16.... 74"(ummm it's the only one I've tried though!)
