A bump to mention a super cool woman who just sailed round Britain despite being quadraplegic. OK, it's a boat, rather than a bike, but she is bloody awesome and I think we can let that detail slide...

Eileen Sheridan - broke the record for cycling from Lands End to Jon O'Groats in June of 1954. After completing the 870 miles, she continued on another 130 to break the 1000 mile time record too!
More pics/info on this Flickr stream
Edit: Oh, and she's from my home town of Coventry, too :)

Look at the size of them drops! The brake levers do not look like they have a usable hood position either. Imagine riding 1000miles like that!

Re Eileen Sheridan
There is some you tube footage of her doing the 100mile record, which was run on a course from London to Norwich or up what would be the A11 and then the A12,
I think the film of that run explains her set up. She seems to have rode mainly on the drops to get a flat back.
If you read " One more Kilometre and we are in the Showers" by Tim Hilton, which I am amazed none of you mention, then there is a chapter on women and post war distance record breaking . Eileen and others feature in this

Of course that would be back in the day when people knew what drops were for.

That book, quirky as it is, ought to be read by anyone interested in cycling in England. Indeed, I would go so far as to suggest that anyone who has not read it should pop off and buy or borrow it now and read it before posting on here again.

From the Telegraph
he admits himself, his information came from no more reliable source than a stranger in a public lavatory at Waltham Abbey.
Silly boy.
Well done to both Gina and Charlotte!
